As a GAMMA Null, you were given Chronos from childhood and trained to be New Mecca's ultimate soldier. Your mastery of time and combat made you a god of the battlefield. You should have won the war.
~ Leon von Alvensleben explaining to Zero the true story of him.
Little Girl: Hey, what's that?

Zero: It's from the war. A medal.
Little Girl: Wow! You were in a war? That means you're a hero! You need to clean it, though. It's really dirty!
Zero: I haven't taken it off in seven years. It reminds me that no matter what I'm doing, I did something good once. (tosses the medal)
Little Girl: What?! Why'd you do that?
Zero: ...I have other reminders now.

~ Zero's conversation with the little girl on the rooftop, and the only time he is talking on his own accord.

Zero is the titular main protagonist of the 2019 indie action-platformer video game Katana Zero.

Originally an ordinary human being, he was taken and trained by the New Mecca government into being a super soldier under NULL project, being turned into a Gamma NULL, an effective killing machine with the godlike powers granted by the Chronos drugs, serving in the Cromag War. Seven years after the war, Zero, now suffering from PTSD, amnesia and various hallucinations, works as an assassin for a secret group to assassinate key figures in New Mecca in exchange for Chronos drugs, given by a psychiatrist. As his story progresses, Zero discovers who he really is, and aims to enlighten the story behind the dreams he has, and all of the actions revolve around him.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • As the ultimate super soldier with godlike powers who serves for the New Meccan government, he participated to the Cromag War alongside fellow NULL soldier Fifteen, and committed various war crimes, such as murdering peasants -possibly including children- and burning their villages.
  • He was seen during a flashback where he killed a scientist and disabled his machine.
  • Seven years after the war, he works as an assassin working for a secret group, assassinating multiple key figures in New Mecca in exchange for Chronos drugs, given by a psychiatrist.
  • He wipes out the entire crew of Josh Rose to assassinate him, and later killed him with a statue or forced him into a suicide by jumping off the balcony before Zero could kill him.
  • If he kills the police officer in front of the Receptionist, he will also cause his death, as the Psychiatrist will have her killed off-screen to silence her.
  • He wipes out the entire crew of DJ Electrohead, and later determinately assassinates him. If he decides to talk to him, he will threat the DJ to make him talk about the drugs, but he will be killed by V instead.
  • Intends to assassinate a Mutual-Nil Prisoner named Fa Yuan until he already finds him dead.
  • Depending on the task giver, he can disobey the Psychiatrist by killing all the SWAT members despite his orders to not cause collateral damage, or can listen to the Masked Men who already ordered him to leave no survivors.
  • If he spared the SWAT members, he will regardlessly kill the old veteran who begs Zero for some medicine. If he wipes out the entire SWAT squad, he will fight with the veteran over Zero's service medal, and have a choice of optionally killing him.
  • Kills V's men and attempts to kill him until SNOW intervenes, while he deserves to be killed for his petty personality, though.
  • While he seems to partially feeling remorse for his actions towards peasants, he still states that killing Cromag soldiers was not so bad.
  • Destroys dozens of motorcycles alongside the men of V's, later destroys his helicopter and attempts to kill him until Fifteen intervenes and kills V himself instead.
  • Attempts to kill Fifteen and Headhunter when he finds them in Chinatown, then steals the prison security tapes.
  • He, chasing Fifteen, kills the police officer who stands on his way.
  • If he chooses to live during his conversation with the Masked Man, he will telepathically kill all of the police officers surrounding him.
  • Kills Leon von Alvensleben by opening the cryotank and causing his rapidly aging, although he deserved it for being the primary cause of what Zero is.
  • Fights the Headhunter numerous times to survive, repeatedly killing her in the process. He eventually kills and beheads her, using it to bypass the retina scan.
  • Before their fight, Zero can admit when Headhunter deduces that he enjoys killing people with using his godlike powers.
  • He kills the Psychiatrist either brutally bashing his head to a bloody pump, or fighting him in a hallucination state and stabbing his head with a sword, while the former one is considered more brutal.
  • Overall, he has the highest kill count of than any other character in the game, and almost all of his murders are done out of the personal profit or survival, but not for good causes.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He has a genuinely tragic past, as he is intentionally taken, trained and experimented under the NULL project to be the ultimate super soldier of New Mecca government to serve in Cromag War, turning him into a killing machine in the process alongside lots of other people. Furthermore, the war left him traumatized and addicted to the Chronos drugs, which are hard to find seven years after the war ended. This case ultimately makes him a villain by proxy as being a soldier was not his choice at the beginning.
  • He feels remorse to an extent for the war crimes he has done towards the Cromag peasants, such as killing them and burning their villages. He states that he sees them every day when he is out of Chronos drugs and it's hard to resist to think about it.
  • Despite being aware what is going around him, he has some moral agency issues. He suffers from PTSD and amnesia, and particularly without Chronos drugs, often starts to see hallucinations to the level of getting insane and is not able to distinguish the reality from hallucination, even mistaking himself with the child he sees in the flashback dreams, in which he was actually the NULL soldier in front of the kid. These cases ultimately make some characters who Zero met, and even their existences questionable, such as the little girl and the Masked Men.
  • Despite being a ruthless assassin, he has standards about harming children. In the Cromag War and his final assignment as a contract killer, he is tasked to leave no survivors or witnesses, but fails in both cases due to child presence.
  • He cares about his neighbors' little daughter, helping her to find her toy Leviathan, watching movies with her and also giving her some food when she is hungry. When he couldn't see her in the apartment at the final scene, he rushes out to search and find her.
  • He can optionally develop good relationships with some characters, main example being the Receptionist, whom he can befriend and even briefly flirt with.
