How sad... they haven't learned a thing from the mistakes of their past; it's a tragedy that King Reiss took the memories of the world away from them. Because of that, they make the same mistakes over and over again. I'm sure that by the end, they'll be sending every person inside those walls off on a suicide charge, from their elders to their children; they'll go on saying that if they're going to die anyway, they might as well die a proud death. It only proves how unimaginative and set in their ways they are... the little fools. Oops. I crushed it into dust, heh, what am I doing? What're you getting so worked up for? You're not like your father, remember? You need to find joy in every little thing. Now let's turn those soldiers into proud little chunks of meat.
~ Zeke as he is suicide charged by the Survey Corps.

Zeke Yeager, also known as the Beast Titan, is the main antagonist of the Attack on Titan franchise.

He is the son of Grisha Yeager and Dina Fritz, who wanted him to join the Marleyan military as the key to carrying out their plan of liberating all Eldians through him. He is the War Chief of the Warriors of Marley until his eventual betrayal and the symbolic leader of the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers. His Vice Chief, Reiner Braun, considered him to be the strongest Warrior and Yelena views him as a god and savior. Zeke is also the half-brother of Eren Yeager, the nephew of Faye Yeager, a member of the Fritz royal family through his mother, and Levi Ackerman's arch-nemesis.

He developed a nihilistic ideology under the belief that if none of the Eldians like him had been born, they wouldn't have had to suffer due to the life experiences he had when he was a child where he and his family received xenophobic backlash from the Marleyan society they lived in due to their Eldian heritage and being instilled a lot of pressure on due to them viewing him as the one who will liberate the Eldians from Marley's cruel system and was eventually lead to believe that his parents never loved him and only used him to benefit their goals, which lead to him gaining the objective to euthanize and wipe out all Eldians to "free" them from their suffering, an objective he would carry out with methods involving massacres throughout the series to get to Eren and convince him to join him in the plot. Despite his agenda, however, Zeke still battles for what he believes to be the benefit of most of humanity and sees his mission as putting all Eldians in the world out of their misery a mass euthanization.

While certainly posing as a dangerous threat as a Titan, what makes him an even greater threat is how intelligent he is due to his strategic ability to orchestrate plans and long-term events and is willing to ruthlessly get rid of anything in the way of his ambitions. Due to his nihilism, Zeke plans on ending his "cursed race" by using the Progenitor's power to manipulate the Eldian's physiology with the intent to render all members of the race sterile in order for them to slowly die out

He was voiced by Takehito Koyasu as an adult and by Daiki Yamashita as a kid in the Japanese version and by Jason Liebrecht in the English dub.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • As a boy, in the past, to protect himself and his grandparents, he turned in both his parents, Grisha and Dina, to Marley Public Security, which leads to both of them and all the other Restorationists getting tortured, titanized, and Grisha nearly killed.
  • In order to gain more knowledge of the power of the Titans and how his royal blood works, he allowed the Titan Biology Research Society to discover that his scream and spinal fluid can be used to summon and control Pure Titans. This ability is used by the Marleyan military for battle strategies, in which Zeke turned units of Eldian prisoners and even civilians into Titans, who rampaged in cities, destroying them and killing numerous residents in wars and terroristic attacks against enemy nations. Two known places involved with this strategy a capital city of an enemy nation and Ragako village in Paradis' Walls.
    • During his involvement in Ragako's destruction, Connie's parents and siblings were among the victims, leaving Connie without a family and his mother stuck as a Pure Titan for four years until her eventual re-humanization after Eren's death.
  • Upon spotting the horse running for Mike Zacharias, while in Beast Titan form, Zeke picks the horse up, kills it by quickly squeezing it to death in his hand, and tosses it at Mike, causing him to fall into the hands of a Titan and nearly get eaten by it.
  • After asking Mike questions about his ODM gear which get no answers due to Mike being paralyzed in fear of seeing a Titan speak for the first time, Zeke takes his gear and then allows the other Titans to move, causing Mike to get killed in a very gruesome manner where he gets his body mutilated, crunched, and pulled apart by the Titans while yelling in a lot of pain, creating one of the most brutal (if not the most brutal) deaths in the series. When Mike begged for mercy, Zeke apathetically walked away and sarcastically mocks Mike for finally speaking.
  • Following the orders of his government, he dispatches his Pure Titans from Ragako to attack the population of Wall Rose, resulting in multiple casualties, among them Kaya's mother.
  • Always during the same invasion, he leads an ambush to a Survey Corps unit camping at Utgard Castle, where he and his comrades from Marley previously camped, breaking off chunks of the wall and hurling them at the castle, getting all their horses, Lynne, and Henning killed.
    • He then screamed to have the Titans attack the castle to kill the rest of them, first sending a smaller wave to test them and toy with them, then sending a bigger second wave, during which Nanaba and Gelgar are brutally killed and eaten, and Ymir almost ends up dying as well. The whole fight at the castle resulted in Bertholdt almost biting himself to transform into the Colossal Titan to survive, which would have resulted in the deaths of Connie, Historia, Reiner, and Ymir.
  • Due to this Marleyan invasion caused by the mass Titanization, the entire population of Ragako village had to be slaughtered by the Survey Corps and Garrison, in order to clear Wall Rose of the threat. This makes Zeke (and his superiors) responsible for the massacre of Ragako and the town becoming deserted.
    • While Zeke does say the truth when he claims he had no personal wish (nor reason) to turn Eldians into Titans and use them to kill people, Levi believes that Zeke has no regrets for his actions and that those lives meant nothing to him, regardless if Zeke has ultimate good intentions or not. This is partially correct, as Zeke's lack of remorse is not from genuine cruelty, but from apathy, and while he is actually capable of feeling regrets and sympathize with his victims, his view on life is so negative and nihilistic that he does not see a big deal with death coming prematurely to living beings.
      • This view includes his own life, himself expecting to die as soon as his term will end. Zeke does not understand why people dramatize death so much, when it will still inevitably come anyway, dismissing the experiences of life pointless, due to the end result being the same.
  • In order to get the Coordinate, he leads another attack on the Walls, this time to wipe out its military resistance at Shiganshina District, first transforming a horde of Eldian prisoners into Pure Titans, and then plugging in the inner gate's breach with a boulder to prevent the horses from passing. This is done so that he and his fellow Warriors can kill all the horses gathered outside Shiganshina's walls and surround the Survey Corps to block their escape, besiege them with Pure Titans for as long as they need, and ultimately either snatch Eren from them and leave or even annihilate everyone.
  • Always during the Battle of Shiganshina District, he sends his smaller Pure Titans to attack teams of the Survey Corps gathered outside the inner gate, resulting with many of them getting killed or injured.
  • After Reiner gives a signal, he tosses a barrel containing Bertholdt in it into Shiganshina, in order to have him transform into the Colossal Titan and wipe out as many enemies as possible in one blow. Although Zeke's original strategy fails due to Bertholdt stopping to check on Reiner, he eventually still transforms and makes a partially controlled explosion in the city, in order to avoid killing the target Eren, and then burns a large portion of Shiganshina into flames with him and launches buildings everywhere to crush any potential surviving enemies, as part of Zeke's plan to corner the Corps between himself and Bertholdt.
  • He then launches bombardments at the soldiers, ending up killing numerous soldiers of them and destroying the outer town buildings outside Shiganshina, with him repeating him launching the waves of bombardments several more times. During the whole deal, he makes a baseball match out of the whole massacre, having fun and claiming he is going for a "perfect game".
  • When the Survey Corps' teenage recruits charge against Zeke under Erwin's lead, Zeke becomes angry and expresses disgust and mockery towards them, commenting how Eldia did not learn anything for the mistakes of their past, due to Karl Fritz having wiped out all memories of history from the Walls' population. As Zeke views Eldia as a threat that needs to vanish for the sake of humanity, Zeke becomes angrier at how the Walls' leaders would be capable of sending people of any age for suicide charges over a cause that he views as the opposite of noble and a pitiful struggle of an inevitable fate of perpetual suffering or extinction.
  • Once he calms down, Zeke reminds himself not to be too serious like his own father and to find enjoyment in what he does, mockingly declaring he will turn all the charging Corps recruits into "proud little chunks of meat". He tosses more bombardments at them, killing many of them and their horses, then exulting cheerfully at his baseball throw, though some recruits survive and continue charging as a distraction. Zeke shows no mercy, becomes more annoyed by their screams, and kills them all, sarcastically pretending to feel sorry for them.
  • He quickly chooses to abandon Bertholdt and leave him for dead, just to cut losses, assuming neither himself or Pieck can try to rescue him from Eren holding him hostage. Despite the chances that Bertholdt will most likely get executed, possibly not humanely, Zeke does not choose to have Pieck jump on Eren to either save Bertholdt or let Eren decapitate him in order to let Bertholdt have a quick death and deprive the enemy from claiming the Colossal Titan and avoid the risk of it being used against Zeke's people in Marley.
  • After failing to take his half-brother Eren and the Founder's power by force for his Eldian euthanization plan, he begin plotting to work against his own comrades during the Marley Mid-East War, by getting close to Yelena and have her create his own organization of conspirators from within the Marleyan military itself; the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers. As Zeke is busy fighting with the troops of the Army as a member of the Eldian Unit, he entrusts his new plans to Yelena.
    • After getting to know Yelena's mentally unhinged character and her lack of morality, Zeke made her his right-hand and used her to deceive discontent Marleyan soldiers - most of them from part of Marley that used to be independent nations before being wiped out - to desert and create the Volunteer faction, through false promises to liberate the continent from Marleyan subjugation and restore its dissolved countries to life.
      • This results in multiple soldiers being murdered by Yelena for the sake of hers and Zeke's ambitions. The killings within the military are indiscriminate, as Yelena murders Marleyan friends who might have grown too suspicious, spies who got into the Volunteers just to incriminate to Marley, or genuinely loyal Volunteers who only could have been spies and traitors or not, or were simply liabilities to Zeke and Yelena's plans.
  • He betrays Marley and along with his Volunteers becomes a collaborationist for Paradis Island, having Marley's first survey ship sent to the island filled with Volunteers, including Yelena and Onyankopon.
    • Due to expecting mistrust and feeling of revenge from Paradis' government, Zeke makes a backup plan and taints numerous bottles of Marley's finest and most expensive wine (thus, a delicious rarity for Paradis' people) with his own spinal fluid. He has Yelena having all the bottles put inside many boxes and loaded in Marley's first survey ship going to Paradis, planning to use the wine as an ace on his sleeve against the Eldian government, in case the island's leaders try to backstab him or have him fed to one of their own.
  • As soon as the Marleyan scouting ship reaches the island, Yelena kills her own captain on Zeke's order and has the other Volunteers making themselves willing captives of the Eldians while pointing their guns at their own comrades loyal to Marley and helping the Survey Corps to arrest them, including the loyalists Niccolo and Griez.
  • He offers to Paradis' government his help to awaken Eren's Founding Titan's powers with Zeke's royal blood and use those powers to terrorize the world with the threat of the Rumbling, although this is only done to force Marley to accept diplomacy over violence, despite Zeke's traitorous actions.
  • After the Eldian government accepts to work with Zeke, his Volunteers spend three years luring other 31 Marleyan scouting ships to the island's shores through false requests for aid by the Volunteers themselves, allowing for approximately less than 4,600 Marleyan soldiers being captured, with some of them possibly dying during the capture and sinking of the ships, carried out by Eren and Armin's Titans.
  • While still fighting for his own country's government in the Marley Mid-East War, Zeke successfully manages to involve politicians from the nation of Hizuru into his agenda, secretly meeting with Hizuru's main diplomat of foreign affairs, Kiyomi Azumabito, and use her clan's greed to convince her to risk the entire safety of Hizuru for personal gain, by suggesting having the Azumabito clan betray Marley and conspire with Paradis. With the Volunteers' help, Zeke strikes a diplomatic meeting between Paradis and Hizuru, and makes a personal deal with Kiyomi, by promising Paradis Island's natural reserves of iceburst stone to Hizuru for free, using the fact that the Eldians are in desperate need of powerful allies and intermediaries from the outside world.
    • Although an alliance with another nation is necessary, Zeke is indirectly aiding with Hizuru's personal ambitions to replace Marley as the world's superpower, as the country's government also seeks to restore Hizuru as a military colonial empire in its own continent and wants to eliminate Marley's competition by having Zeke's planned small-scale Rumbling crush Marley's naval military power.
    • This conspiracy between Zeke, the Azumabito, and modern Hizuru's leaders also puts the entire population at risk, as Hizuru already has a negative record of having allied itself with Eldia prior the Great Titan War, and going against Marley itself puts the fate of Hizuru and its people at stake. The Azumabito - who formerly used to rule Hizuru until a century ago - personally seek to expand their influence and power and become richer through the progress of modern industry, and Kiyomi warned Zeke that if things do not work for Paradis she will immediately rejoin to Marley's side and tell them everything she knows for the sake of her family and country.
    • With all these points, Zeke's actions could lead to a bigger war between Marley and Hizuru (the latter's power in the world being at this point low due to its previous background) and a massive competition between the two nations over global dominance, whilst Paradis would merely become Hizuru's personal colony and convenient weapon to threat the entire world with the Rumbling, which could have provoked Marley or other countries to invade the island again to kill the Founder and eliminate the Walls' population to undo the Rumbling's global threat. This would have made humanity fall in a potential world war, despite Zeke's attempt to "save" humanity for a better future by eliminating the Titans.
  • Always on Zeke's orders, Yelena convinces the Eldian government of Paradis to release the POW Marleyans from their prison cells, after explaining them international laws, human rights, and the need for Paradis to not appear as the inhumane devils the world makes them to be. However, this is mainly done for Zeke to have residences and work secured for the Marleyans, in order to give them access to the island's food and drinks and positions close to the island's military members.
  • Zeke's plan pressured the government to have Queen Historia to have at least one child as soon as possible, as an inheritor of royal blood is needed to pass the Founding Titan on and thus keep the world at bay with the deterrent of the Rumbling. And although Historia ended up giving her own consent, thus not forcing the Eldian military government to have Historia make babies unwillingly, Zeke refused to have children of royal blood himself, for the sake of his plan, presumably seeing it as Paradis' own responsibility (and the Queen's), since Zeke is an Eldian Marleyan and is only helping Paradis to remain safe until natural extinction for his half-brother Eren's sake and happiness.
  • He is the reason why Paradis ends up developing a railway system, a naval port, and a new 3DM gear improved design, which will be used to act against Zeke's own country he betrayed for his agenda. His Volunteers providing Paradis with modern standards pistols will also cause them to be used in attacks on Marley and later even by the Yeagerists against Eldians.
    • Since the Volunteers are under suspicions for working for Zeke, the captives loyal to Marley (although some of them joined the Volunteers), Zeke and Yelena use them to poison the entire core of the Eldian military's higher command (and any veterans) with wine containing Zeke's spinal fluid through the deception.
  • While still busy in the Mid-East, he makes a plan to provoke Marley to declare war against Paradis and drag every major nation of the world in the conflict, by having Eren prove to the world that Eldia is an active threat living in Paradis Island. This makes Zeke a warmonger, seeing all the sacrifices as the greater good to save the world.
    • Although Marley is suffering a serious blow in its navy due to the Mid-East Allied Force and any hostility against Paradis is already being postponed and entrusted to the Warrior candidates who will inherit the Titans very few years later, Zeke conspires to push the military to take action immediately, due to the fact his own time is almost up, and only a few years remain for Eren as well.
    • He makes a ruthless and even cruel plan to start the war in Liberio, his own hometown, as Marley's main military forces are stationed in the city and in the bases around its territory around. Zeke shares his plan with Yelena and Eren (Floch being brought into it as well), explaining that Eren will have to cause the raid on Liberio, force Armin to destroy Marley's primary military naval ports, and then wait for as many nations as possible to join forces with Marley by giving them at least one month to assemble. Then use a partial Rumbling made only of Shiganshina District's awakened Colossal Titans to reach Marley's northern coast at Karifa's military ports and crush the fleet of the world's allied nations, which will brutally kill all the soldiers.
    • Although at this point Zeke might not expect the Marleyan government to prepare an official war declaration from within his Eldian internment zone in Liberio, he is still willing to sacrifice the lives of harmless civilians in the city outside the zone, as he is targeting the city as the place to begin the war, due to the military resources in that area, regardless of the government and the Tyburs' later arrangements and choice to make a festival in that specific city.
  • He is the reason why Marley ends up being invaded by enemy Survey Corps, Eren, and Armin the new Colossal Titan, as a result of his plans to have the Volunteers help develop Paradis and then bring them to Marley, leading to Eren entrusting everything to Zeke, desert the Survey Corps, slip away from their control, and enlist the Marley Army to join the war in the south-east of the continent. By helping Paradis and bringing Eldians to Marley, Zeke's actions lead to the Raid on Liberio and following tragedies that he never intended to make happen.
  • As part of his plan and knowing that Paradis' government means to start trying negotiations with Marley and other countries, Zeke plans for himself and Eren to meet in the Marleyan continental mainland as soon as the Mid-East war will hopefully end the following year, in order to scheme for their war plans and to force Armin to help them. Working at his comrades' backs, Zeke instructs Eren to infiltrate the Marleyan military, so they can communicate closely.
  • Throughout four years of war, he kills numerous enemy soldiers of the nations of the Mid-East Allied Forces, notably assisting the Marley Navy in naval battles, and as usual participates in the inhumane Titan warfare. It should be pointed out that this is war, however, and Zeke is only carrying out his duty as a soldier due to war being declared on Marley by the other countries first.
    • As a result of the war, many Mid-Eastern people lost their homes and were forced to leave their hometowns as Refugees to live in tents within Marley's mainland territory, such as the camp of Ramzi's people, whom some members of the population curse as enemy invaders due to the war.
    • During the final battle of the Marley Mid-East War - the Battle of Fort Slava - Zeke is part of Marley's airborne attack to assault the Mid-East Allies' main military bases. As part of the military's strategy, he screams and transforms a unit of Eldian prisoners injected with his spinal fluid into Pure Titans, who are then dropped by the Marley Air Force on Fort Slava as bombardment against the enemy, resulting in numerous soldiers being crushed to death, eaten alive, while leaving many survivors traumatized and/or injured.
      • After For Slava is conquered by Marley, he transforms into Beast Titan, he launches the Mid-East Allied Forces' own explosive shells at their own remaining naval fleet that survived the previous battles, sinking it entirely and killing numerous more soldiers.
  • After the war is finally over after four years, Zeke begins to commence his ploy arranged with Yelena and Eren, not intending to give Marley time to rebuild a new bigger naval fleet or risk Marley falling into war with other countries. He successfully presses General Calvi, the leader of the military party's dictatorship, to resume hostile operations against Paradis Island, convincing him that Marley needs to seize the island's rare resources and the Founding Titan, especially to use the latter as a deterrent against enemy nations, to prevent them from starting a new war, and allow Marley to develop its military technology and completely renew its government policies.
    • Zeke pushes Marley to declare war on Paradis soon, instead of waiting for a few years, because at this point he has only one year left before his life's time is up and has to pass his Titan to Colt, Zeke and Eren understand that the Eldian government of the Walls is not doing a good admnistration and takes no decisive course of action, while human technology is already surpassing the power of the Titans, meaning in the near future aircraft development, nukes from the sky, and bigger conventional weapons will nullify the threat of the Rumbling and the Eldians will not have any means to defend themselves anymore. Unlike Eren, Zeke does not realize that human development will most likely surprass the Rumbling before the next century will begin, when almost all Subjects of Ymir in the world would die by natural causes without reproducing.
    • Zeke's pushing the government to take action against the threats of the Rumbling and enemy nations brings the Tybur family into the whole deal, with Willy Tybur making his own plans and arranging to have his sister Lara work with Marley's Warriors, also choosing to invite representatives multiple nations of the world in the Liberio internment zone for a festival and make his own schemes with Theo Magath. Zeke and Willy's decision, with Eren letting them develop, ultimately close any possible path to peace and diplomacy that the government of Paradis was trying to reach.
  • Despite having over one month of time to think his plans over, Zeke still decides to carry out his plans and let a massacre in Liberio happen, even if it will include his internment zone where his grandparents live. He insists to carry out his euthanasia mission with Eren make sacrifices in order to realize his plan, while hypocritically seeing Grisha's massacre of the Reiss family as evil and wrong. As previously arranged, Eren drags his former comrades of the Survey Corps to Liberio, telling them through to letters sent by Falco to another Marleyan coastal city that he entrusted everything to Zeke and that they plan to start the war at Liberio, and Armin must destroy the naval ports at the city. Zeke has Yelena and Onyankopon steal a Marleyan airship for escape back to the island and a small supply of Titan serum to pass down the Founder and the Beast.
  • During Willy Tybur's declaration of war, he lures his fellow Titan Warriors away in underground locations, in the attempt to prevent them from joining the planned attack and leave Lara Tybur and the military unassisted. He lets Falco take Reiner to Eren in a basement and has Yelena trap Galliard and Pieck, betraying his closest allies.
  • His plan (as well as Willy and Magath's) results in Eren killing many people in the Liberio internment zone, most of them innocent civilians, and others being multiple diplomats and politicians from other nations and Marley, including Willy himself, and other harmless VIPS from across the globe and Marley itself.
    • Other victims include many of Zeke's superiors and several top executives of the hierarchy of the Marleyan military, including General Calvi himself.
    • While at least the military leaders were Zeke's ruthless oppressors and warmongers themselves, the worst result of Zeke's plan is the deaths of his own junior comrades Zofia and Udo, both died during Eren's initial rampage, with Gabi and Falco almost being crushed themselves. Many others are injured and are brought to the zone's hospital.
  • He does not join Commander Magath's troops to aid them and Lara against Eren in battle, vanishing while Lara is cornered and out of strength, and finally coming out when seeing that Yelena failed to restrain Galliard and Pieck when the two appear with the Panzer Unit. He then pretends to fight alongside his fellow Warriors to defend Liberio, whilst actually staging a fake fight between himself, Levi, and the rest of the Survey Corps. Due to the new Survey Corps members being unaware about Zeke pretending to fight for Marley, some of them end up getting killed for real.
  • He is also responsible for the deaths of many soldiers of the Marleyan military are killed during the battle against the Survey Corps in the internment zone. This includes several soldiers who were openly friendly to the Eldians, despite being full Marleyans themselves, like Zeke's own close comrades of the Panzer Unit and the two friendly Public Security gate guards of the zone.
  • As planned, his and Eren's attack on Liberio result with the massacre of harmless full Marleyan citizens outside the internment zone, due to Armin's Colossal Titan explosion meant to destroy the primary naval ports of the Marleyan military. As Magath called for the Marley Navy's primary fleet to bring reinforcements in, Armin's attack destroyed it while attacking the ports, killing numerous soldiers as well, just as Zeke and Eren intended. However, the explosion also takes an area of innocent civilians involved in the process, children included, killing many of them.
  • Tries to deceive his own grandparents and former Marleyan comrades into believing he was brutally killed by Levi, causing Gabi to initially grieve for him and feeding into her wrath, as Zeke caused her to witness the deaths of many of her friends and the near-deaths and humiliation of her heroes, the senior Warriors (including Zeke himself with his staged defeat).
    • This betrayal by Zeke, as well as Eren having used Falco to drag the Survey Corps along, result with Gabi's rampage and the deaths of Sasha and Lobov, which also leads to Gabi and Falco getting beaten by soldiers and almost murdered.
  • Once he arrives to Paradis, he looks at Gabi and Falco staring at him in disappointment as they are detained by the Military Police, displaying no visible emotion for them.
  • Despite all the other Warriors, Eldian soldiers, and some Marleyan soldiers respecting him and seeing him as an ally, Zeke betrayed them and their trust, all for Eren's sake and believing he is helping the people of Marley as well. His betrayal personally affects many, especially his grandparents, his protege Colt, Magath, Pieck, Galliard, Gabi, and Falco. As a result of his actions and his repeated manipulations and betrayals, Zeke made himself despised by many from both Paradis and Marley.
    • His deception to make Marley believed he was killed in action is quickly undone by Pieck and Magath, as the former recognized Yelena as a Marleyan soldier devoted to Zeke who was part of one of the missing 32 scouting ships sent to Paradis. Magath, knowing this and that he and Willy Tybur knew about collaborationist traitors from within the military (the Volunteers), confirm to Magath that Zeke is still alive, after finding only his limbs and not any other remains. All these accusing factors also supported with the fact that only a pilot experienced with airships could have piloted the Survey Corps' stolen retreat zeppelin and that the new ODM gear designes utilizes added Marleyan technology.
  • As a result of his careless and assuming betrayal of Marley, along with Eren's own brutal actions and being the public threat of the Rumbling, Zeke is responsible for the arrest of his grandparents. The alliance between the Yeager brothers and the previous Restorationist criminal record of their father Grisha, leads to the whole Yeager family being condemned as treasonous global terrorists by Marley, resulting with the innocent Grisha's parents - who are completely in the dark and have just trying to live a normal life after losing their children - being arrested by the government.
  • Zeke and Eren's successful provocation of outrage and rage of the world with the Raid on Liberio leads to numerous nations, including all the major ones, listen to Willy Tybur's warnings and view the Eldian Empire as humanity's still living enemy. As such, the Global Alliance is created and its military forces start assembling at Marley in Karifa, as Zeke and Yelena predicted, while Magath succeeds Calvi Marley's leading General.
  • His successful Raid on Liberio is the reason why the population of Paradis begin falling into chaos.
    • The attack on Marley results with the mistrust for Eren and the Volunteers, and even less trust for Zeke, knowing how easily he betrayed his own people and family.
    • Zeke's machinations result with the division of the military and Eren's friends no longer trusting him, especially Connie, who also lost his family to Zeke's past attack. The Raid on Liberio also caused an investigation of Zeke's faction, the Volunteers, and the disturbing aspects and dishonest actions of Yelena come to light, revealing how the Marleyan POWs have also been secured work in odd places very close to the military.
    • This chain of events leads to the government incorrectly speculating that Zeke is manipulating Eren, and the leaders decide to have Eren fed to another Titan soldier. This results in the murder of the head of the government, Premier Dhalis Zachary, and the military splitting between loyalists and Yeagerists. Zeke (along with Eren) is responsible for the loss of order and civil unrest in Paradis.
  • As soon as he came to the island, he secretly had the Marleyans serve a box of the wine tainted with his spinal fluid to Levi's unit, who bring it along with them to drink during their one-month long mission to camp outside the Walls with Zeke. When the Eldian government loses control a month later, Levi attempts to feed Zeke to a random Yeagerist (and then later feed that Yeagerist to a loyal soldier). Zeke screams to transform Levi's 30 soldiers into Pure Titans following Zeke's orders. He uses them to attack and kill their own captain Levi, while he makes his escape with other two, believing that Levi would not kill his own soldiers even if they were Titans. He makes taunts about it towards Levi as he escapes.
  • Left with no choice, Levi ends up reluctantly killing his own subordinates and hunts Zeke down, causing the latter to transform into the Beast Titan in frustration and starts to rip two of Levi's Titanized subordinates apart to throw chunks of flesh at him. Zeke shows no sympathy for his two former gaolers and even taunts Levi for killing 27 of the soldiers.
  • When he joins the battlefield at Shiganshina District, during the Revenge for Liberio, Zeke takes the side of the Eldians against the Marleyans, his former comrades and friends. He launches bombardments against the Marley Air Force, eventually destroying all five of the invading airships and killing all the soldiers inside them. He also targets the soldiers on the ground and in the buildings, where Colt and Gabi are as well, destroying Shiganshina and leaving it in burning ruins once more.
    • Although Zeke believes that Eren would never do the full Rumbling like Willy Tybur claimed he will, he is unknowingly opposing the people trying to kill Eren so they can save humanity and the world from being destroyed, making Zeke (and Eren's friends and the Volunteers) clueless accessories that allowed for the Rumbling massacre to happen.
  • He constantly attacks his former friends with his bombardments, injuring Reiner and Galliard, and failing to harm Pieck as well, almost killing his former superior Magath, who is enraged by Zeke's betrayal and almost to kills him during battle.
  • When he tries to summon his Pure Titans from the hundreds of soldiers who ingested his spinal fluid, both Eren and Colt try to stop him. Colt informs him that Falco also ingested his spinal fluid and pleads to him to wait for Falco to get out of range of his scream outside the Walls, before Zeke can do it. Colt also makes Zeke remember their relationship and how Colt never understood him throughout the years, and begs him not to drag his little brother into the brutality. While conflicted by this, and despite having known Colt and Falco for years, the latter being a child, Zeke regretfully denies Colt's plea and screams anyway.
    • His scream turns Falco, Commanders Pixis and Nile Dok, and all the wine-marked Eldian soldiers present into Titans at his service. He uses Falco to attack Reiner, so he can stop harassing Eren.
    • His choice not to spare Falco for Eren's sake results with Colt getting burned to death, as Colt lost self-control and in the grieving moment remained to hug Falco instead of getting away from his Titan transformation, making Zeke responsible for Colt's death and the Yeager family wrong the Grice family for a second time (not counting the time when Colt's uncle agreed to force Zeke to become a child soldier).
  • His action against Falco causes Galliard to sacrifice his own life for Falco's sake, allowing him to eat him in order to inherit the Jaw Titan and a chance to live thirteen more years.
  • After being able to reach physical contact with Eren (albeit barely due to his human head getting shot off by Gabi) in order to transport both of them to the Paths of the Coordinate is at, he attempts to convince his half-brother to genuinely join him in his mission to "euthanize" the entire race of Subjects of Ymir in the world, in order to let them die out the next century, and finally bring a new era of "peace" for humanity.
  • Despite having succeeded in getting the power of the Coordinate, due to the Founder Ymir Fritz obeying to his commands, Zeke lowers his guard and becomes too confident after chaining Eren up in order to realize his goal. When Eren frees himself, Zeke makes no effort to restrain Eren once more by summoning more chains, instead only looking at him reaching Ymir's spirit with confidence and realizing too late that Ymir suddenly stopped obeying him. This ends up with Eren gaining full control of the Founder's power and unleashing the Rumbling upon humanity.
  • Although Zeke cannot be blamed for Eren's own decisions, his self-projecting onto his brother (while everyone else in Marley knew the real threat), and his decision to betray his country and work with his own enemies all resulted with the Wall Titans being awakened.
    • Even his decision to start the war in Liberio led to the formation of the Global Alliance to destroy Paradis, while previously most of the world was concerned with its own issues and Marley and other countries were busy squabbling against each other. It was Zeke's choice to have Eren and Armin attack Liberio that led to the world focusing on Paradis as a global threat and viewing Marley as the tragic fallen heroes, as Willy Tybur himself told Magath that if the massacre did not happen, most countries would have remained cautious and skeptical in provoking the Eldians.
    • Zeke's constant underestimation of Eren, resorting to violence, and his interference against General Magath's forces (who were winning before Zeke arrived) are the causes of Eren gaining his power, with Zeke's Volunteers also having unknowingly helped the massacre of their own homes and families, after they betrayed their own friends in Marley.
    • Because of this, Zeke's own hometown, Liberio, ended up getting trampled and destroyed by the Rumbling. And although numerous of the Liberian citizens managed to escape and survive, Zeke's own grandparents could not, as while citizens were escaping via fast vehicles, Mr. and Mrs. Yeager were locked in a jail cell by the time the Rumbling reached the city, due to Zeke's treason and Eren's actions. While the Public Security Authorities were humane enough to release all their prisoners, the Yeagers were left locked (possibly by spite), so they could get killed by their own progeny.
  • While Eren, Fritz, and Floch manage to outrank him in scale of their massacres, Zeke stands out and manages to pass the heinous standards in his own way for engaging on a far more personal level of villainy/heinousness towards the main characters than them, being more brutal in many of his kills (and attempted kills), and having turned countless Eldians into Pure Titans throughout many missions.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is extremely tragic for many reasons:
    • When he was a child, he received xenophobic insults and backlash towards him and his family by humanity, just for their Eldian heritage, and was even shamed and humiliated for this with his family by the society they were living in.
    • His own parents, Grisha and Dina, were rebels known as the Eldian Restorationists and used Zeke to push their personal political agenda. They enlisted him into the Marleyan military as the group's mole when he was only 6, without caring about his feelings and not being good parents to him.
    • Grisha and Dina cared more about Zeke becoming a child soldier than they did about him being their son. The biggest value they saw in him was his royal blood, and showed little concern and no remorse at the fact that they were sending Zeke, an innocent and introverted child, to Marley's military campaigns as a mere tool of war to become traumatized by brutality, and become a killer himself. Grisha and his group wanted Zeke to become a warmonger and join Marley's Warriors in order to steal the Founding Titan, use it control all the other Titans, and then bring war and destruction upon Marley to conquer it once more, just like the Eldian Empire had done. Zeke's parents viewed their cause as just and did not care if their own child was going to become a brutal mass murder who would slaughter countless people and restore the oppression of the Marleyans.
    • Grisha and Dina also knowingly wanted their son to reduce his own lifespan greatly by inheriting one of the Nine Titans, which was going to leave only 13 remaining years for Zeke. They showed little concern about the idea of their son dying so young, and like Karina Braun and Mr. Leonhart only focused on their personal ambition and exploiting children to fight their own battles and solve grudges and sins of adults (something later addressed by both Artur Braus and Secretary Muller).
    • Zeke had a lot of pressure put on him by his parents, due to them wanting him to become a Warrior and instilling their political beliefs in him (Grisha ignoring the fact that his own father had tried to do the same), that he is destined to be the one who will save the people of the Liberio internment zone.
    • He was lonely as a child and he was seeing visibly unhappy around his parents during his younger years. As the couple was often going out on their own, mostly for their secret Restorationist meetins, Zeke was often left with his grandparents, who were more loving towards him and treated him like a child, instead of a Restorationist, as the two were not satisfied with how they raised Grisha and were doing better with their grandson.
    • He was indoctrinated by both Eldia and Marley, throughout the eyes of biased and resentful adults of both parties, dehumanizing each other as in the wrong, instead of acknowledging each other's faults. His parents rarely bothered to play with him in his early years, and not all when he became a child soldier. Zeke's attempts to convince his father to spent some quality time with him were ignored. The only times his family ever spent time with him was to discuss politics and history and teach him their biased views of it. They helped him study Eldia's version of history defending all their genocides and wars, or theories conjured by their Restorationist group denying certain atrocities done by Eldia, especially towards Marley.
      • While his grandparents and the military taught him how brutal and evil Eldia was, at his parents' home Zeke used to memorize and repeat everything he was told, as this was the only way to get excited and prideful approvals from Grisha. His parents, only obsessed with Zeke being a Restorationist and becoming a Warrior, did not try much to bond as a family, which is rubbed in Zeke's face by the view of other families bonding with each other
    • His life in the military academy was harsh, as he was much smaller and weaker than the other child cadets and struggled to endure the brutal training of the Marleyan military, while also suffering the usual discrimination by the non-Eldian Marleyan soldiers. Zeke performed so poorly that his then-chief overseer and lead instructor Theo Magath often humiliated him and yelled at him in front of all the other kids, who in turn shunned him. One day, Magath got tired of him and ordered him to leave. It is mentioned by Zeke that Magath used to beat him up certain times, at least during his teenage years, if Zeke was late or did something wrong.
    • Although Zeke was scared of Magath, he could not talk about his struggles and failures at home, as his overbearing father had high and demanding expectations of him. When at the age of 7, Zeke found out that he was secretely being raised to become a terrorist and a criminal by his parents, Grisha put even more preassure at him and told him in a very hopeful and demanding tone that he knew he would be capable of becoming a Warrior, because he is his son.
    • This preassure from Grisha made Zeke face Magath again every day, only to fail his training session and his classes again. His emotional status only made him perform worse. During one public demonstration, where adults could watch the kid soldiers performing, Zeke was doing terribly, and when he realized his parents were watching, he saw both of them turning their backs on him and leaving, Grisha walking away quickly and upset, whilst Magath shouted at him.
    • Due to Zeke's inability as a Warrior candidate, his father got disappointed a lot and ended up going into a breakdown, ranting while yelling about his son's failure and how his best isn't enough, while his wife tries to calm him down. Grisha even made it uncomfortable for Zeke to eat peacefully during meals, staring at him with resentment, angry eyes, and disappointment, which made Zeke terrified of him. While he did have a positive relationship with his grandparents, the only person Zeke ever actually bonded deeply with like parent and son and spent quality time with was the Warrior Tom Ksaver.
    • Always when he was 7, after discovering that the Public Security Authorities found out about the existence of the Eldian Restorationists and their leader Owl, Zeke started to fear for his life and tried to tell his parents to stop going out and doing dangerous things, as if they would get caught, they would be deported to Paradis Island and turned into Pure Titans forever. Without even let him finish to speak, Grisha was dismissive of his son's fears and then telling him with an upset, obsessive, and intimidating attitude that if the Eldians don't take a stand, their people will continue living pitiful lives trapped "tiny cages" forever, the internment zones like their own in Liberio. Dina supported this, and when Zeke asked them if they'd still say that if they knew he'd end up like Grisha's younger sister, Faye, Grisha snapped and yelled that the only reason Faye isn't alive is because of how cruel and twisted the world is, and thus the Eldians needed to fight and "fix" the world so that no one could meet her fate again, and that is why they were determined to win their rights back, which caused Zeke to go in a bit of a meltdown himself.
    • While he initially resigned himself to his fate as a Pure Titan, he was driven to believe by Tom Ksaver that his parents were only using him, never spared a thought about how he felt, and never even loved him in the first place, which served as the nail in the coffin for him being motivated enough to report them as the leaders of the Restorationists to Marley's Public Security per Ksaver's requests. According to Ksaver, Zeke doing so would prove the Yeager family's loyalty to Marley, which would spare Zeke and his grandparents from being condemned. Ksaver and his grandparents were by his and the Public Security Authorities' side when Grisha and Dina were arrested for their crimes. Zeke was visibly heartbroken by having to do this, and was crying when he saw his parents for the last time. In the subsequent interrogation, Zeke confessed he was being used as a mole by the terrorists to sabotage the government's future mission on Paradis and threaten the peace with the rebirth of Eldia. The Marleyean state made accepted Zeke's grandparents as his legal guardians.
    • Zeke's choice to report his parents is not portrayed as heinous by the narrative itself. Not a single time he was ever judged or portrayed in a villainous manner for it. It is realistically portrayed as a mere seven year old boy who was not accountable for his actions, being used as a child soldier by abusive parents for their own ambitions. He was being denied a normal childhood and his parents only talked to him about social and political problems, death and war. Life at home and at the academy was almost unebearable for him, and felt better while outside with Mr. Ksaver. Even when Zeke's betrayal of his family is revealed for the first time, it is portrayed as Grisha's mistake, and not Zeke being an evil child. Grisha immediately takes full responsibility for his poor parenting skills and justifies Zeke's choice to get rid of him. Grisha is consumed by guilt for what he did to Zeke and still loves him to the very end, no matter if Zeke fights for Marley or Eldia.
      • The Eldian Restorationists were already being exposed by Public Security's investigations, possibly through Eren Kruger (maybe even Eren Yeager)'s deliberate help, which is why Ksaver urged Zeke to report his parents, out of concern for the boy's fate. Had Zeke kept quiet about his parents' crimes and his status as a mole against Marley, the outcome would have been the same, only with Zeke and his grandparents getting deported to Paradis as well and made into Pure Titans.
    • His abusive childhood turned him into an emotionally scarred and suicidal man, that most people don't understand, while he is a complete mystery to them as a person. During his teenage years developed the ideology that if Eldians weren't born in the first place, they wouldn't have had to suffer at all
    • His tragedy is shared with those of the other child soldiers of the Eldian Unit. Despite spending much of the final parts of the story wanting to kill Zeke and wishing revenge against him, especially for what he did to Liberio and his part in Udo and Zofia's deaths, General Magath eventually acknowledges that Zeke was a victim of the system and the cruelty of adults. After learning from two of Zeke's captured underlings (Yelena and Onyankopon) that Zeke's goal was different from Eren's goal to destroy the world, Magath ends up viewing Zeke in a more sympathetic light again. In his last moments, he expressed remorse for his actions in the Marleyan military and especially for indoctrinating children to serve the country's interests. He finally admits his affection for his Warriors and wishes those children could have had normal lives, thinking about Zeke along with other Warriors before taking his own life, finally showing some empathy for him.
  • He was a good person in his younger years, despite his inability to develop a higher level of empathy during his teens, and Ksaver considered him to be a decent person. Presumably ever since his first war for Marley, Zeke started to become more cruel and ruthless.
  • After turning his parents in, he chose to remain a soldier, as well as to continue his Warrior training, improving under Ksaver's wing and performing better than he did when he lived with his parents, much to Magath's approval. The reason why Zeke continued his military duties, was because he still felt some guilt for turning his back on his parents and failing them as a Restorationist. When he was a teenager, Zeke was actually still working as a mole in the Warrior Unit, as he wanted to inherit Ksaver's Beast Titan and carry on his parents' mission to free the Eldians.
  • He eventually came to abandon his parents' mission, and develop an intense hatred for his father Grisha, replacing him with Tom Ksaver as his true father, disowning Grisha and calling himself his "former son". As a teen, he saw the idea of struggling for freedom as futile and unrealistic, especially when he came to develop a more utilitarian mindset which values the needs of the majority. During his late teenage years, Zeke became a nihilist and was disillusioned with the prospect of Eldia's redemption, and after seeing how his people are treated as less than human, sometimes even by their own parents, he came to the conclusion that Subjects of Ymir would have been better off not being born at all, as life is only pointless suffering.
  • He also shares some of the same sentiments as Karl Fritz when it comes to Eldia's guilt and atonement, supporting Frieda Reiss when she states that the billions of lives stolen by Eldia are lost and can never atoned for no matter what, and in this conflict the only ones who need to die are the Subjects of Ymir and no one else, in order to achieve a better world. they believe so, because in their eyes it is fair that the ones who started the Titan wars are the ones to perish in the end.
  • As far as he is concernced, the extinction of Eldians from the world is inevitable and the only two options are either by brutality or by natural causes. He and Ksaver chose the latter, as they viewed it as the most peaceful and humane end for their cursed race, over getting slaughtered by humanity. He despises Eldia and considers it the real threat to humanity. He created the Volunteers because he and Yelena saw that Marley became too much like Eldia and it needs to be saved from itself, before becoming completely "irredeemable" like Eldia. Zeke believes his mission will save Marley and all Subjects of Ymir from the cycle of hatred.
  • He has genuinely noble intentions behind his actions as everything (or at least a good majority of) what he did was for the sake of freeing the world of the fear and suffering at the hands of Titans, who ruled for thousands of years, seeking to save everyone and ending his cursed race, freeing the world from its fear of Titans, and free his people from their suffering, making him not only an extremist but an anti-villain as well.
  • He develops a genuine friendship with Tom Ksaver, often spending time playing catch with him while having conversations about their situations and Ksaver's studies and research, ending up revealing to him his plans and ideologies. His friendship with him strengthens to the point where he develops deep care for him and views him as a father-figure seeing him as the father he always wanted to have, even calling him father in his final moments. It is his mentor Ksaver who gave him the quest for "Eldia's euthanization" and the two were the only ones who worked in the plan for years, until Zeke eventually came to know the non-Eldian Marleyan Yelena and confided his feelings about life and his kind to her, although how he did come to trust her is unknown.
  • Due to his nihilism, he believes that all the people he kills are just spared from the pain of the meaningless life anyway, especially the Eldians. Be it the victims of Liberio or Paradis, Zeke genuinely believes he just saved the lives of the children they could have bore from the world, which is too cruel and not worth living it, in his perspective. He developed a Messiah complex that he fails to be aware of, thinking he is the one who knows what's best for everyone, and that the others are just hurting themselves with their struggle for life, if Zeke is not there to "save everyone". He becomes even angry when he sees people holding life and fighting with pride with value, especially when it is Eldia who does so, as Zeke despise the Eldian Empire as much as most of humanity.
    • After his euthanasia plan failed, Zeke shows how his nihilistic views were not only limited to Eldians, but to all humans. By the time Armin reaches him in the Paths, Eren exterminated most of the world with the Rumbling, and Zeke sees no point in humans struggling to resist, thinking that life has proven to be so cruel and unfair anyway and that death is coming for everyone anyway, making life and its experiences worthless in Zeke's eyes.
  • His ideology is portrayed as neutral and tragic, instead of negatively or villainous, while Eren's more cruel and brutal solution is portrayed more negatively and shown to hurt the entire world, including his homeland and friends.
  • He displays care towards his grandparents with one of the reasons he sold his parents out to the Restorationists being to protect them and embraced them affectionately upon their welcoming of him back after returning at the gates of the ghetto at Liberio.
  • He genuinely cared about Eren, showing sympathy towards him while believing that he was brainwashed by their father Grisha like how he was and trying to save him and showed satisfaction when hearing that Eren has come to terms with what Grisha did being wrong, getting a bit teary-eyed at hearing his speech (which he would quickly hide while conversing with him) and sought to save everyone with him.
  • He is genuinely loyal and friendly towards his comrades in Marley's military, helping them win numerous battles against combatans of other nations and sharing with them his ideas on winning their wars.
  • He showed some sympathy towards some of the people he killed like some of the Survey Corps scouts he was fighting against, remarking in a angry albeit somewhat sad tone on how they never learned that history repeats itself and that it's tragic that King Reiss robbed them of the memories of the world and that they can never learn from their mistakes and that they'll justify it with reasons like dying honorably, then following that up with a comment on how it's such a waste.
  • He showed some care towards Bertolt, showing some reluctance on abandoning him in Eldia, knowing that he is going to be killed.
  • Despite all his cruel actions and seemingly callous nature, he is not devoid of human feelings and is genuinely affable and civilized, not holding any resentment towards any of his enemies and still feeling an attachment to his former comrades and friends from Marley. He also feels sympathetic to his mother Dina and puts her in a more forgiving light than Grisha, blaming him for dragging his family into danger, and being upset at him for "forgetting" about his first son and first wife.
  • He is genuinely fond of Pieck and his younger fellow Warriors like Colt, Gabi, and Falco. He is close to Colt and the two often play catch together, like Zeke used to do with Ksaver.
    • The only reason Zeke ends betraying Marley, is for the sake of making his half-brother Eren, as supporting Paradis' defense was never a necessary requirement for Zeke to side with the Founding Titan's holder and make Subjects of Ymir infertile with them.
    • He tries to have Gabi and Falco released from prison by asking Levi to let them come to the forest with them, under Zeke's wach.
    • He is genuinely saddened when he id deceived to believe that Pieck is killed by the Yeagerists.
    • He is visibly horrified when Colt reveals to him that Falco injested his spinal fluid, and throughout Colt's plea he is conflicted and extremely regretful, telling Colt that he genuinely sympathizes with his brotherly love, but due to Magath aiming at him and Eren, he has no choice but to summon his Pure Titans at once anyway.
      • He is ashamed over it, unable to look at Colt's burned corpse and Falco's Pure Titan. He somberly orders Falco to attack Reiner, without watching the scene and keeping his head low. It is the most shame and regret he ever displayed over hurting someone.
    • When he liberates the souls deceased Titans from Marley, including Ksaver and Grisha, his former comrades Marcel and Porco Galliard are standing around him as his allies, showing how Porco does not hold resentments for Zeke's betrayal anymore.
  • He finally began to display some care towards his father, Grisha, as well at the end, being touched by his apology towards him and confessing to him about how wrong he was and that he will always love him no matter how mad Zeke is, even getting teary-eyed a bit and saying "Oh, father" in an affectionate tone. He later greets his father's soul when meeting him in the Paths during the final battle, showing how he finally made his peace and reconciled with Grisha, who along with Ksaver help Zeke and Armin to defeat Eren.
  • He is shown to have some standards, being shocked and disgusted when discovering that Eren was the one responsible for Grisha killing off the Reiss family which ended up fueling his decision to have Founder Ymir take the ability to reproduce from every last one of her subjects and displayed even further standards on Eren's plan to use the power of Founder Ymir to unleash the Rumbling on humanity, and attempted to stop him from convincing Ymir from giving him her power desperately.
  • During the final battle at Fort Salta, he accepts to help Armin and reaches the souls of past Titan holders from Marley - Grisha, Ksaver, Kruger, Marcel and Porco, Bertolt, and Ymir - who side with the two and the alliance between Marley and the Survey Corps to stop Eren. Thanks to Zeke, the resurrected Titans come to aid the allies struggling against the Ymir Fritz's Titans and fight them.
  • He winds up redeeming himself by sacrificing himself to stop the Rumbling through having Levi kill him, and finally showing remorse for his atrocities in his last moments while looking at the sky and admiring its beauty, lamenting over how he hadn't known it sooner and that anything as easy as that would be too much to ask after all the murders he committed, accepting his fate.
