Willy Tybur, commonly referred to as Lord Tybur is a major antagonist in the manga and anime Attack on Titan. He is the head of the noble Tybur family and the shadow supreme leader of Marley. Willy's mission is to unite the world's nations for a united global alliance to start a war attack on Paradis Island, by reminding the world about the threat posed by the Rumbling that was made a century ago. He wants to reveal the full truth behind the Great Titan War and King Karl Fritz's true role in it, and alert the world that Eren Yeager is now the enemy of humanity and peace who will destroy the world, unless all the nations help Marley to stop him.

His true objective and priority is to save all the Eldians living in the internment zones across the globe, mainly those in Marley, from destruction and extermination, as well as to save the Marleyans from losing their independence by the world's other nations, who threaten Marley's existence, and thus that of all the Subjects of Ymir in the world, due to the rest of the major nations hating them worse than Marley does. To prevent this, Willy wants to give the entire world a common neglected enemy from the past, which is the Eldian Empire, to stabilize the global tensions and restore Marley as a nation of heroes once again. He also plans to reform the nation to put an end to its self-destructive imperialistic customs.

He serves as the overarching protagonist of the Marley arc, posthumously one of the overarching antagonists of the first half of the War for Paradis arc (alongside General Magath), and a posthumous character for the rest of the story.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • As head of the Tybur Family he is the secret ruler of Marley. For a century, his family chose to withdraw from active politics and gave the Marleyan citizens freedom of governance, allowing Marley to drag himself in a path of aggressive militarism and imperialism in which the nation continues conquering enemy nations and waging war. Although Willy cannot be blamed for the decisions of his predecessors and he was born into this life, and it is never said in the story when exactly he became the head of his family, he still didn't use his influence to at least discourage the Marleyan government from approving dangerous campaigns such as the Paradis Island Operation, and only intervenes when it is too late and the world's major nations threaten to go into war amongst each other and mainly against Marley.
  • Along with his country's government and military, he chose to target the remote Paradis Island for a war campaign with the objective of solving Marley's own personal global issues with the other major nations, under the pretext that it was to take revenge against Eldia and save the world from the Rumbling. As most of the world's citizens needed a scapegoat to blame for each nation's trouble with global stability and an imminent world war, the Subjects of Ymir in all the internment zones were a perfect target for the hate. To change target, Willy gave humanity the perfect common enemy scapegoat to blame and to bond and unite together against, which was what remained of the fallen Eldian Empire within Paradis' Walls. Although Willy's purpose to save the world and his country from war, to save the Eldians everywhere in the world's ghettos from extermination, to bring a more stable world without war, and to save everyone from the possible threat of the Rumbling was noble, he still used innocents to accomplish it, by rallying humanity against an entire population of civilians unprovoked and without negotiations to massacre them, all to solve the world's own problems.
  • He avoids telling a certain truth regarding the failed Paradis Island Operation; he neglects to tell his audience that Marley's real objective to invade Paradis Island was to gain its resources, such as iceburst stone, and fossil fuel, all to maintain its global military dominance through imperial conquest, and to defeat and intimidate all the nations with the power of the Founding Titan, as everyone else doesn't know its power is unusable without Fritz royal blood. Instead, Willy tells the world that Marley's sole purpose to send four Warriors to destroy the Walls was only to save the world from the threat of the Rumbling. Willy avoided revealing the truth due to Marley's status as the world's "bully" making the nation already despised by many.
  • He used his speech and death and the deaths of many important figures across the globe in the Raid on Liberio to prove his point about Eldia's cruelty and omnicidal quest, and thus unite most of the world's nations, including all the major ones, together to join Marley's cause as the Global Alliance, so that they could join their militaries together to kill everyone on Paradis Island. As he intended, the Liberio attack finally gave the world a massive defeat for Marley, yet portraying it in the sympathetic light of a nation trying to redeem itself and save humanity, and the Marleyans still being the main victim targets of Eldia as it always was. The raid made most of the entire world being sympathetic to Marley and join the cause against the enemies.
  • Purposefully let numerous Eldian residents, the most useless executive leaders of the Marleyan military, and numerous important audience members from Marley and many other countries, be put in the front row during his theater production in the Liberio internment zone's plaza, so that as many of them possible alongside him would be killed by the enemy infiltrators from Paradis Island, in order to portray himself and especially the Eldian people of Marley as the tragic victims of the Eldian Empire's brutality in the eyes of the world. All in order to redirect the world's resentment for Marley and the hate for Eldians in the internment zones to the people of Paradis, making Marley a redeemed nation of heroes who saved the world from Eldia once again, as it historically was in the Great Titan War. Willy's declaration of war also resulted in the deaths of numerous Marleyan citizens outside the internment zone's walls, at Liberio's coast where Armin's Colossal Titan destroyed the military ports.
  • Despite his lack of screen time, he stands out due to convincing almost every nation to attack Paradis and by using his death and the Liberio massacre to prove that they were a threat, killing any potential peace negotiations between Paradis and the rest of the world. The creation of the Global Alliance gave Eren Yeager a reason to initiate the Rumbling, although the ultimate thing that caused most of the world to join forces against Paradis was the brutal Raid on Liberio, more than Willy's own speech, as in their eyes it only proved Willy's point and warnings.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • As mentioned above, the Tybur family's sins, mistakes, and negligence were beyond Willy's control, as he was already born into it since childhood and was just content with his own luxurious life, without having to deal with the mistakes of his own predecessors and relatives. The Tyburs also genuinely thought they were doing a good thing by respecting the freedom and independence of Marleyans without Eldian blood and letting them choose their own policies. Willy expresses unhappiness when he finds himself having to take control of the government to steer Marley into a better path and a good future, wishing he could just leave and go back minding his own business, and considers himself and unlucky man of fate who has to sacrifice himself for humanity, including the citizens of the internment zones.
  • He really wants a better future for the people of Marley, both outside and inside the internment zones, and is genuinely affable to others, namely his powerful friends from other countries who he is in good terms with. He also worked to improve the social standing of Eldians in the world for years, which at least improved in Marley and a bit at Hizuru, compared to how the rest of the world's nations treat them due to Marley's repeated abuse of the Titans.
  • His ultimate objectives are to to accomplish what the Tybur family was meant to do after the Great Titan War, but neglected to do; which is to create a more peaceful, united and modern world without Titans, like Karl Fritz had intended. To realize this, Willy chooses to redirect all the major nations' tensions and mutual rivalries towards a common enemy and scapegoat, which is Paradis Island. In Willy's eyes, it is a sacrifice necessary to save Marley from being attacked and conquered in the future, and to redeem the Subjects of Ymir in all the world's internment zones, by proving to the world that they're not affiliated with Eldia and by portraying Marley's Warriors and soldiers as the saviors of humanity who stopped the Rumbling and brought global peace and stability. He wanted to make Marley a nation of heroes once more, under a hero, a "new Helos" to save the world. Also, it is likely that Willy genuinely believes that the people of Paradis are vengeful and seek to destroy the world with the Rumbling with Eren. His mission is the reverse of Eren's, both prioritizing their respective side for survival.
  • Forms a comradeship with Commander Theo Magath built off mutual respect and agreed with him that they are no better than the Eldian descendants of Devils. Willy orchestrated the deaths of General Calvi and most of the military's top incompetent and outdated hierarchy in order to have Magath take power as the military's new General. He arranged for the governmental party of Marley to appoint Magath and to approve of whatever he does and whichever new replacement official he will name. Willy personally picked Magath, despite him being outranked by other leaders, because of his competence, his anti-war views and lack of interest in power, and the fact that he is a soldier who spent much of his life alongside Eldians, making him more tolerant to them and less willing to listen to the petitions to exterminate all Subjects of Ymir once the Titans will no longer be useful in war.
  • Due to learning about the sins of the Tybur family and their Eldian allies of the past from his sister Lara, he feels guilty over the selfish actions of his ancestors and genuinely wants to atone for their crimes. Due to this he did not abuse his control over Marley and deliberately stayed out of their political affairs.
  • Provoked the Raid on Liberio to help Magath expose Marley's enemies, mainly those the Marleyan continent who defected the military (the Anti-Marleyan Volunteers) and potential traitorous rival nations such as Hizuru, and to portray all the internment zones' Subjects of Ymir as non-Eldians and tragic victims of war.
  • Genuinely loved his family as he is shown saying goodbye to them and asked his older daughter Fine to watch after her siblings and kisses his wife goodbye, knowing that it will be the last time he sees them.
  • His goodbye to his family is played for sympathy.
