“ | Hello, Detective Banks. When was the last time you saw your father? | „ |
~ William's most famous quote. |
“ | That's a game. Shoot me and you both lose, shoot the target and we both win. | „ |
~ William forcing Zeke to shoot the target. |
Detective William Emmerson, also known as William Schenk, is the main antagonist of the 2021 horror film Spiral: From the Book of Saw, the ninth installment of the Saw franchise.
He is the copycat of John Kramer who was inspired by him into making death traps and putting corrupt cops into them. However, unlike his inspiration, Schenk puts his victims in inescapable traps that end up killing them in a brutal way no matter their will to live, given his crusade against corruption. He is also the former ally turned enemy of Detective Ezekiel Banks.
He was portrayed by Max Minghella. As a child, he was portrayed by Leonidas Castrounis. In-costume scenes as The Dark Figure were portrayed by Joseph R. Racki.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Unlike John Kramer, William Schenk puts people into his traps which are almost impossible to escape and doesn't give them much of a single chance to survive his traps, proving he doesn't want any of his victims to live. Even if some of his traps could be winnable in theory, they would leave their victims mutilated for life.
- William also confirms to Zeke that he only wants to kill corrupt cops, and that he didn't want his victims to survive.
- Marv "Boz" Bozwick got put in the subway trap from his tongue and was hit by the Train.
- Detective Fitch got put in the finger trap on a bathtub to have all his fingers pulled out and was electrocuted.
- Angie Garza got put in the wax trap and suffocated from hot wax for not cutting her spinal cord.
- Peter Dunleavy got put in the glass bottle trap and was lacerated by a lot of pieces of glass bottles.
- William also confirms to Zeke that he only wants to kill corrupt cops, and that he didn't want his victims to survive.
- He kidnapped Benny and skinned him alive just to fake his death.
- He kidnapped Detective Ezekiel "Zeke" Banks and chained his arm while giving him a hacksaw to cut it off like John Kramer forced Lawrence Gordon to do with his foot. However, he escaped, but unfortunately failed every other test.
- He is seen to be negatively manipulative.
- He made people think that Charlie Emmerson (who is his father) is his son.
- He dialed 911 and pretended that someone is trying to kill him by shooting with a gun. However, the SWAT believed that Chief Marcus Banks was the one who was the guy with a gun, which led them to kill him.
- While Amanda Young similarly made unwinnable traps and Logan Nelson possibly as well (though it's unclear if Logan's games are beatable or not as none of his victims followed his rules correctly), at least Amanda did that thinking they would put her victims out of their misery, whereas Schenk kills his victims just to punish them.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He still upholds his care for his father as he put his killer Peter Dunleavy into a trap as a revenge for killing him. He even has a tattoo of his dad's name on his arm.
- He suffered a tragic backstory as his father was killed by a corrupt officer when he was younger.
- The reasons why he takes down officers are he wants to clean up corruption within the police forces and wants to avenge people who were innocently harmed.
Trivia[]
- He is one of the five characters (alongside John Kramer, Amanda Young, Lawrence Gordon and Logan Nelson) to be Inconsistently Heinous in the Saw franchise.
