“ | They say there are two ways to be fooled. One is to believe what isn't true. The other is to refuse to believe what is. Maces and Talons. I began playing with my grandfather when I was just a boy. I always insisted on being the honorable Viking chief. I could never understand how he bested me time and time again. For years I assumed his skill transcended mine. I believed what wasn't true, but you see, in Maces and Talons, as in life, the line between good and evil is often unclear. Black and White can become grey so easily. What one soul considers evil, another might consider righteous. The honorable chief who fails to see this is found to be the fool. | „ |
~ Viggo Grimborn's introductory speech. |
“ | Viggo: Apparently, Johann wasn't as easy to fool as I thought. Hiccup: You double-crossed me! The antidote. Viggo, where is the antidote? Viggo: Oh, there isn't one. You really don't know your oleanders do you, Hiccup? Red Oleander is harmless to dragons. I knew there was no other way to get your help. I would never harm such a magnificent creature. When Johann and Krogan left me for dead, a Monstrous Nightmare saved me. I spent my whole life hunting dragons, killing them. But I learned to respect them as equals. You taught me that. That's the final irony I suppose. |

~ Viggo's redemption. |
Viggo Grimborn is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Krogan) of Dragons: Race to the Edge, serving as an unseen antagonist in Season 1, the main antagonist of Seasons 2 to 4, the secondary antagonist of Season 5, and a major anti-hero in Season 6.
He was voiced by Alfred Molina, who also played Doctor Octopus in Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Home and The Duke in Solar Opposites.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Oversaw the entire Dragon Hunters operations, having dragons are captured, enslaved, and tortured before being to be sold for profit.
- He revealed he would continue doing this until he exterminated every single dragon.
- Pretended to forgive a hunter for stealing from the inventory, before having him tortured and/or executed offscreen.
- Sent the Dragon Hunters to hunt down Dagur the Deranged for freeing Heather.
- Has a Flightmare captured and chained up to be forced to open the Dragon Eye for him.
- Although he released it, he only did it to avoid being captured and almost caused the Dragon Riders to be destroyed by it.
- Spread a deadly epidemic known as the Scourge of Odin, even sacrificing some of his own men just so he could profit from its cure to get rich. He and his brother Ryker then threatened to kill the Buffalord, the last of it's kind, if they could not take it.
- This act alone helps him stand out from most other villains in the franchise, and be on the same level as Drago Bludvist and Grimmel the Grisly.
- Enslaved multiple Catastrophic Quakkens to build a stronghold made of marble, to prevent dragons from destroying it with their breath weapons.
- Attempted to ambush the Dragon Riders, leading to Dagur's presumed sacrifice.
- Held an auction to sell many dragons and tried to sell Toothless to Krogan who would bring him to Drago Bludvist's dragon army.
- While he did have Grump the Hotburple live instead of killing him, this was for pragmatic reasons, as he used him as a personal garbage disposal.
- He also allowed Grump to be tormented by every Dragon Hunter, including Ryker.
- Claims all of Berk's gold, economically crippling the island, which disastrously results later on.
- Tried to have the Eruptodon cause an eruption on the volcano in Dragon's Edge to destroy it, first by starving the poor dragon.
- By capturing the Eruptadon, he also deliberately condemned Caldera Cay to destruction from its active volcano.
- Places a bounty on Hiccup and claimed to give the person much gold but it turned out to be a lie.
- Captures the Submaripper and uses it to eat many traders and keep Trader Johann away, causing Berk to start to starve now that there is no one to deliver food to them, making it his second action that would warrant a Pure Evil or Near Pure Evil status had he not been redeemed.
- When Hiccup and his friends freed the Submaripper, he was determined to continue fighting the Dragon Riders despite the improbability of victory and the fact that it would result in the destruction of their fleet. He lost his nerve and nearly killed one of his own followers if Ryker hadn't stopped him.
- Attempted to have Ruffnut drowned to death as a trap for the Dragon Riders.
- Enslaved a Shellfire dragon to threaten islands with annihilation to cow down to him.
- While Viggo was initially patient and respectful towards Ryker (although Viggo often teased and annoyed him), over time he began to become physically violent and take out his frustrations on him, treating him with disrespect and beginning to think little of his own brother, even though he still trusted him, although Ryker was initially loyal and faithful to him despite his own provocations. This ultimately led to him betraying him and taking control of the Dragon Hunters himself, making Viggo ultimately responsible for Ryker's betrayal.
- Brought the Submaripper to combat Ryker and the Shellfire, remorselessly causing the death of his own brother and many of the Dragon Hunters.
- Held Astrid hostage and threatened to kill her in exchange for the Dragon Eye.
- He worked with Krogan and Johann to take down the Dragon Riders and find the King of Dragons. He later revealed he planned to betray Johann and Krogan and take the contract from Drago Bludvist for himself.
- He and Krogan sent hunters to take over Outcast Island and kidnap Alvin in order to obtain a supply of Ice Tail Pike fish. It's implied by some of the Outcasts that they threatened Alvin's life as well.
- When Jarg fails to secure Outcast Island as their post for fishing the Ice Tail Pike, Viggo suggests to simply toss him down a Whispering Death hole to finish him off efficiently.
- He helped with the invasion of Dragon's Crag and is ultimately partly responsible for Hiccup and his dragon riders leaving, and the former apparently having to destroy all evidence of his own Dragon's Eye.
- He regained possession of the Dragon's Eye from the volcano, which he later gave to Johan, causing even more suffering and even helping him in his quest to find and capture the King of Dragons.
- He was one of the commanders of the siege of Dragon Island, who ordered the dragon flyers to fight and destroy the dragon riders.
- After being betrayed by Krogan and Johan, he plotted to bring them down, luring Hiccup and Toothless to a remote island by pretending to be his father in order to win him over. While he initially tried to persuade Hiccup with words, after Hiccup refused, he falsely claimed that Toothless had eaten red oleander, lying that it was poisonous to dragons, and that he would die if Hiccup didn't help him in his quest for revenge against Johan and Krogan.
- He put a Skrill into a trance to use it against the Dragon Flyers, which resulted in several Dragon Flyers and their dragons being seriously injured and the Skrill being incapacitated and captured by Johan (although Viggo later freed him).
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- The main reason why he can’t count for at least Near Pure Evil is that after being betrayed by Krogan and Johann, he was saved by a Monstrous Nightmare, which causes him shame for his misdeeds in hunting them. This caused him to redeem himself by respecting dragons and even sacrificing his life for Hiccup.
- Despite being mostly dishonorable and pragmatic, at times, Viggo is shown to have a sense of honor and can accept when he is defeated, seeing Hiccup as a respected enemy, and even allows him to save Astrid from the Scourge of Odin. After escaping the volcano, he was kinder to his men and even saved one of Krogan's henchmen even when he nearly had the Dragon Eye in his grasp, because he was disgusted by Krogan's needlessly cruel actions against his men and his needless sadism in his executions. His entire redemption stems from gratitude towards a dragon, creatures he spent his whole life hunting for profit, for saving his life.
