| ~ Vergil in Devil May Cry 5. |
Vergil is the main antagonist of the Devil May Cry franchise.
He is Dante's elder twin brother and rival, with the two being Sparda 's children born from his relationship with Eva. In contrast to Dante's more carefree, laid back and outgoing personality, Vergil is more cold, stoic and reserved.
While Dante gives more priority to his human side, acting as a protector to humanity, Vergil is more focused on his demonic heritage and on seeking power at all costs, to make sure that he will never be hurt again like in the past, something that makes him conflict with his brother more than once through the series.
He was voiced by Dan Southworth in the English Dub and by Hiroaki Hirata in the Japanese Dub.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General/Background[]
- Even as a child, Vergil already showcased signs of arrogance and rivalry towards Dante.
- In spite of the high heinous standard of the series, Vergil easily stands out for his personal villainy towards both Dante and Nero, his key role in allowing Arkham's plans to come in place and for being indirectly responsible for Urizen's rise, who endangered all of humanity and nearly killed Dante and his allies.
Before Devil May Cry 3[]
- While visiting Fortuna, he had a brief affair with an unknown woman, who eventually gave birth to Nero. However, Vergil abandoned Fortuna, leaving the two without any form of support, with Nero being raised in an orphanage instead.
Devil May Cry 3 Prequel Manga[]
- After hearing about the legend of Temen-ni-gru from Arkham, Vergil decides to aid the latter's plan in raising said portal and opening a gate to the Demon World by breaking its seals.
- After discovering that Dante lives in the same city and finding him face to face, he exchanges some deadly threats with him and reveals to him his plan of raising Temen-ni-gru, taunting with one half of the Perfect Amulet, which is needed for the ritual.
- He fights Dante and trounces him, right before he throws back to him the other half of the amulet, taunting him by saying that he could retrieve it any time soon.
Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening[]
- In top of the Temen-ni-gru, he brutally fights Dante and wins, mortally wounding him and taking his half of the Perfect Amulet. The only reason Dante survived the battle was only due the fact that he was capable of awakening his Devil Trigger.
- He attempts to fight Dante again, only to be stopped by Arkham, claiming that they already have what they need, with the two jumping off the tower.
- Having learned of Arkham's betrayal, he stabs in the chest, presumably killing him.
- He attempts to open the gate to the Demon World anyway to obtain more power, uncaring of the threat that the Demons May present to humanity.
- He kills a wounded Beowulf and takes his soul as a Devil Arm.
- After being interrupted by Dante during his ritual, Vergil fights him again in a ruthless battle, leaving the two tired and uncapable of stopping Arkham from opening the gate.
- After helping Dante against Arkham, he still retains his goal of obtaining more power, taking the Force Edge and fighting Dante one last time.
- He refuses to return to the Human World even after Dante's request, letting himself fall down the Netherworld, being presumed deceased and leaving Dante sad, if not outright depressed, from this event.
Devil May Cry 1[]
- After being turned into Nelo Angelo by Mundus, he aids him in his plan to return to the Human World and conquer it.
- He fights Dante three times, holding him back and attempting to kill him, eventually being defeated by the former.
Devil May Cry 5[]
- After breaking free from Mundus' control, he enters Nero's home and rips out his Devil Bringer from his arm to reclaim the Yamato, leaving him to bleed to near-death, being saved only by Kyrie and Nico's intervention.
- He uses the Yamato to divide his human side, V, from his demonic side, Urizen, with the latter emboding his worst traits, such as his lust for power and brutality. This makes him indirectly responsible for Urizen's actions, who endangered humanity and was able one of the worst threats faced by Dante and his allies.
- Even after being reunited in one, Vergil refuses to seal back the gate to the Underworld with no regret over his actions, even after being asked by Dante to give him the Yamato.
- He fights Dante yet again in top of the Qliphoth, with the two nearly killing each others, only to be stopped by Nero.
- He fights Nero, as the latter wants him to drop his rivalry with Dante, being also not above taunting him in battle.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- In spite of everything, Vergil is ultimately too tragic to be Near Pure Evil, let alone Pure Evil:
- He used to live a mostly normal childhood with his twin brother Dante and his mother Eva, right before an army of demons sent by Mundus attacked their home. Eva was capable of bringing Dante to safety but was killed right before she could find Vergil, leaving the latter forced to defend himself on his own, under the belief that Eva prefered Dante as a child over him. Hence the reason he craves power so much: to make sure he will never be hurt again like in the past.
- After being captured by Mundus after the events of DMC 3, he was horribly tortured and enslaved by him, being turned into a nearly mindless puppet, something that is played for sympathy and makes him a scapegoat as well. Even after he was freed from Mundus' control, he was left gravely injured and almost devoid of all of his strength, with his act of splitting himself in two with the Yamato being done in desperation to survive.
- All of this is shown to affect him even in the present, as V's Familiars represent his trauma, at the point that they got themselves killed by Dante to bring Vergil some comfort.
- He has an iron clad sense of honor, as while power hungry, Vergil still has some lines that he isn't willing to cross:
- He doesn't like to use dirty tricks in battle, at the point that he doesn't like to use guns, considering them weapons not worthy for a warrior. To make an example, he allows Dante to take a rest and heal himself after he defeated Urizen, even though fighting him at the moment would have allowed Vergil an easy victory against him. His sense of honor was still present even while he was brainwashed as Nelo Angelo.
- He despises traitors, something that makes him turn against Arkham, at the point of saving Dante's life from Arkham, thus playing a key role in stopping the latter's plans.
- He is willing to respect his opponents and accept his defeats, at the point of being willing to surrender his rivalry with Dante After Nero was capable of defeating him in battle.
- While he is not the most kind person, Vergil still showcases some care, or at least respect, for his family:
- He clearly looks up to his father Sparda, desiring to achieve similiar levels of power to him, being proud of his demonic heritage.
- While he resents his mother, Eva, for not being able to protect back then, he was still shown to care for her, with his childhood trauma coming from not feeling loved from her.
- As headbutting the two are, Vergil still showcases some care for Dante, not only saving him from Arkham but also for telling him to get to safety after the exit from the Demon World was about to be closed. This is more evident in the present, after having dropped his rivalry with him and engaging in a less hostile version of it.
- While not exactly a great father, Vergil was still willing to respect his son, Nero, at the point that after the latter defeated him in battle and proved his worth, he was willing to stop fight Dante as desired by the former. He was also genuinely grateful to him for taking care of V and thus allowing him to return.
- While he did cut off Nero's arm and leave him to die, it was because he was desperate to survive and he had no idea he was his son in the first place, learning it from Dante during their fight.
- After the events of DMC 5, Vergil redeemed himself (or at the very least, vastly cooled down from his villainy), by helping Dante sealing away the Underworld, even though the two would get stuck in it, having also dropped his rivalry with him.
Trivia[]
- He and the White Rabbit are currently the only two Devil May Cry villains to be Inconsistently Heinous.
- Fitting enough, his brother and rival Dante is his moral opposite, being Inconsistently Admirable instead.
