Jesus she's really unnerving... And people still simp for her lmao
Ok, now that her removal on NPE has been successful, I think ya know the drill like any other recently cut NPE. Another character that is going down the NPE-IH pipeline due to the former's new tragic standards.
Anyways here's the proposal for the extreme and rather unpredictable manipulator herself, Makima, and some hopes that the proposal goes out with a Bang. (If you know you know)
What's the Work?
Summarized it before in my NPE removal so I'll repeat:
Chainsaw Man is a 2018 Manga series written by Tatsuki Fujimoto that later got a 2022 anime adaptation by MAPPA and a 2025 film following that by the same company (Which I hopefully plan to watch soon, it's goated from what I've heard). Story-wise it revolves around Denji, a teenager boy, who after taking down the Zombie Devil and its fleet, is discovered by Public Safety's Devil Hunters and is placed to work with them, while also having contracted with the Chainsaw Devil, Pochita, that allows him to become a hybrid who can activate chainsaws in his body used for combat. That's the plot for Part 1, which Makima is the main antagonist of. Part 2 involves around Asa Mitaka contracting with the War Devil, Yoru, which the latter caused so that she can hunt down the Chainsaw Man.
Who is She? What makes Her Heinous?
Makima is the Main Antagonist of Chainsaw Man's First Part (AKA the Public Safety Saga) and one of the Four Horsemen Devils, specifically embodying Control/Conquest. At one point, she and her siblings had fought the Chainsaw Devil, AKA Pochita, in Hell, which had caused the latter to disappear and retreat to Earth in the doggy form we all know and love, and later adopted by Denji where they become best buddies. The Horsemen later also made their way to Earth where they adapted into human forms, with Makima included, though she was placed into the hands of the Japanese Government who had harshly weaponized her instead of raising her affectionately, hence cementing Makima as this manipulative, ruthless Devil who not only seeked affection due to lacking one, but intended to assimilate the world into a draconian-level of "peace" where with the intent of using Pochita, she had all negative concepts erased, including her sisters, and therefore can control all of humanity with their free speech basically stripped due to her abilities.
Throughout her goals, she had also made a contract with the Japanese Government where everytime she gets hit and killed, it claims the life of a Japanese person, alongside overall creating pawns via manipulating them into doing outright immoral actions, as seen with Angel where she had him kill the people in the village he was close with in order to test his skills, and taking position as one of the main operators of the Public Safety Devil Hunters to build more allies and have them be controlled by her into obedience and finish tasks she assigns them which typically involve killing out any Devils which she typically deems a threat or hindrance to her plans. This powerful grip in the organization and her overall nature have made her an insanely feared Devil by other nations, including the United States where the president outright labels her goals as "The worst kind of peace" because of its tyrannical practices.
Anyways, she is first seen in Part 1's story when she encounters Denji who had just killed off the Zombie Devil and its goons, whilst having known that he had contracted with Pochita to become a hybrid to save his life, and as a result took Denji with her and even fed him food in a facade of being affectionate so that he can gain her trust more, if him being attracted to her wasn't enough of a sign, whilst threatening him to kill the Muscle Devil who had kidnapped a man's daughter, stating that "dogs" like Denji would be euthanized if he didn't obey. Afterwards, she rendered him an official member of the Public Safety Devil Hunters, and even had him be partnered with Aki and Power in the hopes of Denji building a connection with them so she can later break him, viewing his contract with Pochita as a barrier against her desire to connect with Pochita for the sake of weaponizing him against other Devils. Additionally to keep him loyal to her especially with his attraction, she makes convincing proposals like planning on partnering with Denji personally if he keeps up his hard work in Devil Hunting and allowing him to have any reward if he eliminates the Gun Devil successfully, not much in there so far, but still questionable.
By the Samurai Sword arc tho, Makima alongside many other Public Safety agents had gotten attacked by the Yakuza, who were working for both Akane Sawatari and the Gun Devil, though it was also heavily inferred that she had anticipated it and let Sawatari and the others orchestrate it to boost her control over the Public Safety branch and implicitly Denji too. Either way, she revived, unscathed from the shot, and killed the shooters of her and the other Public Safety agent accompanying her. She then had Tendo and Kurose retrieve 30 convicts to be used in sacrificial rituals where they would risk their lives so that Makima can use them to also eliminate a majority of the shooters involved in the incident once Akane became superfluous to her and plotted against Makima. She had also set up a meeting with one of the Yakuza branches where she proposes a co-operation where the Yakuza reveals names of the attackers, though they refuse due to what they call "a necessary evil" as Japan would otherwise be threatened by foreign criminals such as the Russian Mafia. Makima retaliates by using the eyeballs she gouged out of their loved ones as a way to coerce them into co-operating, whilst using her abilities against a Yakuza member by causing him to bleed and die, calling out their "necessary evil" as hypocritically harming more people. By the end of the arc, she was also implied to have the Snake Devil kill Sawatari due to having info regarding the Gun Devil being defeated that she doesn't want revealed.
In the Bomb Girl arc, she continues to assert control over Denji via letting him date her in a movie binge (Which also reveals her desire for connection from others as she is seen tearing up in a movie about a family reunion) and returns at the end of said arc where Reze had planned to meet up Denji at the cafe she formerly worked in. Upon confronting her, Makima alongside Angel incapacitate her (though she doesn't die due to being a Hybrid) because she sees Reze, who despite initially being an assassin intent in killing Denji, as a threat to Denji's loyalty due to the two having planned to build an affectionate relationship. After that, the International Assassins arc has her escort Public Safety agents to guard Denji due to his identity being exposed and therefore vulnerable to assassins from the US, Germany and China. One of these assassins in question is Santa Claus, a psycho who had turned many, including Tolka, into dolls, and had a contract with a Primal Devil, the Darkness Devil. The latter had attacked Denji and his allies, even killing several of them like Beam and Galgali, and Makima didn't respond to the attack until Princi had summoned her, where she fights the Darkness Devil, got Denji's squad back on Earth, revved up Denji to attack Santa Claus. Afterwards, Quanxi and her remaining girlfriends show up to propose a surrender to her, but Makima rejects it, calling them a "corpse" and instead kills them for the sake of controlling their contracts.
Her villainy is revealed more in the last two arcs, starting with the Gun Devil arc. To keep him loyal to her, she offers a travel with him to Enoshima which was initially scrapped because of worries regarding Denji being assassinated, but Denji rejects as he has to take care of Power who got badly traumatized by the ordeal Santa Claus caused. She arranges a meeting with Denji, Aki, and Power in the midst of the mission to take down the Gun Devil where she reveals that the Gun Devil was defeated the whole time and just was fragmented, with many countries each gaining a portion of the Devil and causing conflicts over it. Because of this, Makima intends to declare war against countries like the US and the Soviet Union so that she can assimilate the fragments under her control. She also arranged a meeting with Aki at the beach who wanted to ensure his death was prevented, and when Aki revealed his desires to protect Denji and Power that makes him hesitate the contract, Makima forces Aki into making the contract, with the brainwashing reminding Angel of when Makima had forced him to kill the village he was connected to, before he became assimilated as a pawn of hers too. It's there where the story practically reveals her true nature as the Control Devil, a Devil that was considered one of the most feared and dangerous, even by the US President who calls her endgoal dangerous.
She then baits the Gun Devil to confront her in Nikaho, which caused the Gun Devil to kill over 50,000 people whilst making its way there. Makima then attacks the Gun Devil via using practically all of the contracts coming from the deceased people she had control over, including Sawatari, Kurose, and Tendo, which decimates the Gun Devil to the point of defeat, where Makima has it be transformed into a fiend via using Aki as a vessel for the Devil. Makima warns Denji that the Gun Fiend would attack him and Power, and when Denji opened the door in his apartment, he finds out Aki was possessed by the Gun Devil, and therefore is forced to fight and later kill his best friend in order to not only save himself and Power but to ensure the possessed Aki doesn't get many lives killed. She then took advantage of Denji's current state of guilt by inviting him to her place and lets him practically act like a "pet" of hers. She had also invited Power where she offers Denji a birthday cake due to him turning 17... a "moments before disaster" situation as Makima immediately blasts her and goes "bang" in front of Denji, practically breaking him whilst Makima laughs about it and reveals her true intentions: she wanted to break Denji repeatedly by seemingly giving him a happy life and then fragmenting it, all so that his contract with Pochita also breaks. She also reveals that Denji had accidentally killed his father and gaslighted him via blaming him for his father's, Aki's, and Power's death.
When she is later ambushed by a SWAT team that Kishibe commanded, Makima takes full control of Denji and activates the Chainsaw Man's powerful form as a defense against the Hell Devil and the agents. She also reveals her contract of her being hit causing a death of a Japanese to Kishibe alongside her end-goal where she intends to use the Chainsaw Devil to annihilate any negative concept via eating the Devil of it, all so she can take control of humanity into what she envisions as a "peaceful" and "flawless" world, even if it means fighting the Chainsaw Man. Makima also reveals she has no qualms with the Chainsaw Man eating her, even though by doing so, Control is erased and therefore the world would plunge into an insanely chaotic state. When the Devil goes rogue and enters the Family Burger restaurant for a bit of "VAM-VAGAH", Makima summons the other Hybrids until her complete control to pursue and battle the Chainsaw Man, who beats them with ease, and tries to even blast him to space.
She (while having many humans shown chained under her control) confronts him once more while he's near a dancing Kobeni, revealing her view of humans equal to that of pets, alongside the fact that the Chainsaw Man being venerated by the public is practically sapping his power, before attempting to use the deceased Angel Devil's spear to kill Kobeni, only for the Chainsaw Man to defend her and get impaled by the spear. When Power is revived as a regular Devil to protect Denji and the Chainsaw Devil, Makima attempts to get rid of her via using her finger-blasting, the Zombie Devil, and even trying to make her a "pet" if she returns Denji, though that doesn't succeed as Denji is left in a dumpster by Power and is revived back to his human form later, who is also warned by Kishibe about her immense hearing skills that can get him killed.
Makima and the controlled Hybrids confront "Denji" once more in a graveyard, where she talks more of her extremist plans after being questioned by "Denji", where she uses "Bad movies" as an example of her goals, in which the bad movies being gone are practically demonstrations of human autonomy being stripped away if her plan succeeds, much to the contempt of "Denji". In an attempt to kill him, Makima has the Hybrids and the Zombie Devil's hoard ambush him and repeatedly attack, which "Denji" clears out albeit in a weakened state. Makima gives him blood so that she can fight and kill him personally, and manages to tear out his "heart" with Pochita in it, claiming the Devil as finally hers... or so she thought, as it was revealed to be a decoy and Denji appears with a chainsaw in his hands, using it on Makima while she is caught off-guard because she failed to memorize his scent, and finally gets her killed by later becoming Denji's food... though she is later revived via another incarnation that is Nayuta, who Denji takes care of as a brother-figure to her, because Pochita had revealed Makima was the cold person due to lacking affection in her past, thus making Nayuta a heroic character.
Heinous Standards
Trust me bro, Chainsaw Man's standards are high as hell with how much carnage is caused by both Devils and even humans. We got villains like the Gun Devil who got over a million killed because of its rampages, the Aging Devil and Santa Claus each enacting horrible Fates Worse than Death on many humans, heck even one of Makima's sisters, Yoru, wants to enact a global FWTD via eternal warfare.
Though I will say, Makima should fare easily as she has a gargantuan mix of a rapsheet:
I genuinely feel bad for Denji... this and Power's death are not something that a guy especially his age should experience, and is one of the worst psychological damages one can experience.
A - She caused a crapton of casualties that range to even millions, not only through individually killing people such as Power, Aki, and Akane, but throughout her plans a lot of people had gotten into her crossfire, such as her contract with the Government that kills any Japanese everytime she gets hit, up to goading the Gun Devil into fighting her which took out more than 57,000 people alone. She's even willing to attempt more with her global control plans and instigation of wars against other nations to control more of the Gun Devil.
B - Her main worst crime is to practically assimilate the entire world into her own control, which while intended to "positive", is in reality an Orwellian regime where humanity is stripped of free speech and some even killed for that "peace", with even concepts like Death being erased... which as we've seen in Part 2 is far from a nice experience. Even if she doesn't gun total human annihilation or eternal warfare, it's uniquely vile enough in its own way to stack up to what her sisters plan to do against the world. Heck, she's even fine with the world turning into an anarchist, chaotic state that would exacerbate the amount of casualties to an extreme level if she gets eaten by Pochita, which she's willing to let happen mind you.
C - She has the worst personal villainy to Denji, who mind you was a minor during Part 1. She enacts the deaths of his closest friends just to break him into ceasing the contract with Pochita, and even forces him to kill Aki via making the latter a Gun Devil vessel, alongside psychologically tormenting him through revealing his memory of him killing his father and blaming him for the death of his closest ones. The worst part is she's willing to let it repeatedly happen, as she mentions she'll keep on building a facade of a happy life to Denji and kill the ones involved with it again and again and again... even if it's for her extremist goals, it's still one of the worst niches on a psychological level for a minor who has already gone through hell itself.
With this combo, she's a pass imo.
What Makes her Inconsistent?
Makima watching peak fiction (AKA a movie that reinforces what she desires - love and affection that she had unfortunately been stripped from)
You've been expecting it, I've explained it in the removal in the Wiki she was formerly in, and I don't mind explaining again: Firstly she's too tragic for Near Pure Evil. Originally when in a humanoid form, she was an innocent Devil but because the Japanese Government had focused on weaponizing her instead of giving her love and affection, which ended up distorting her into a cold, emotionless Devil that enacts these questionable means, whilst still yearning for the affection she lacked. This is fleshed out enough even despite her vile nature, as when binging movies with Denji, she was genuinely moved by a movie which showed a family reuniting and even tearing up at it, as it's a reminder that she still wanted to embrace that affection and even called the movie an enjoyable experience because of such. Heck, even Pochita, one of the most moral characters in the series and her archenemy, sympathizes with her situation and as of such advises to Denji that he should take care of Nayuta, Makima's reincarnation, because of this.
This brings me on to my second point of why her tragedy makes her fit here better: Nayuta. Yes she's a separate entity but is a symbol of what Makima could've been. She initially had the same purpose as Makima, a controlling and ruthless Devil, but Denji's hugs and caring for her, a natural upbringing, have made her break from that purpose, and even made her heroic as a result on top of having a happy and stable life with her brother-figure and pets (until Barem showed up, screw that guy...), with her possessive qualities at most being of a childlike demeanor instead of a manipulative, cunning one. Overall, she's an insignia that had Makima not gone through a harsh, artificial past where she had no say in how she is shaped and had a close connection, she'd be a decent person who does admirable deeds to help the world instead of her questionable acts, which is overall too damning imo, and even Fujimoto sees her as really tragic and lacking "firsthand experience".
That's not her only quality: She's also a Well-Intentioned Extremist, something that's an extension of her tragedy too. Yes, she uses incredibly questionable means to achieve her goals and is rendered "The worst kind of peace" according to the US President, but they're still genuine, as because of her lack of affection during her upbringing, she intends for the world to not suffer the same thing, where she guns for the Chainsaw Devil to erase all negative concepts, including War, Death, and Famine. And with this, she hopes that each human, in spite of being stripped of free will by her control, proejcts love and care for each other as compensation for not having one, and despite what she says about humans at times, this goal is never subverted at all, and her idea that the crimes she does is a good thing to enact it also stems from her tragedy screwing her up her moral views, so that's saying something.
Thirdly, her smaller redeeming quality ain't caring for Pochita, as that's more possessive fanaticism as she sees him as this tool for enacting her global "peace", and has no qualms attacking and killing him if he goes defiant. The quality in question is her care for her dogs, as she acts affectionate towards them, and even if part of it is due to their loyalty, it's the closest thing she has to genuine care and affection, and it's something she loves.
Verdict?
Yes imo.
