New proposal for 2026, copying a little bit from my previous Overwatch proposal. I spent hours working on this before lifting my laptop 1 inch to get a crumb out from under it, and it freaked out and restarted and fandom didn't save anything. So apologies if I skip things; I'm annoyed and just want to get this done.
What is Overwatch?
Overwatch is a hero shooter game released in 2016, featuring an extensive list of playable characters, lore, locations and more. But perhaps the most interesting bit of lore is around these 2 Junkers.
Who are they?
The first candidate
Anubis
Anubis is a god program created to protect the world's ecosystem, but turned against humanity when it concluded that they were the number one threat to the biosphere. After its research team died (it's unclear if Anubis staged it or not), Anubis took control of every Omnic in the worldand launched a war against humanity, resulting in the formation of Overwatch. They were unable to beat Anubis alone, so Aurora sacrificed herself to grant every Omnic sentience, cutting off Anubis' army so Overwatch could shut it down. Decades later, it tried to break out of Helix security by taking control of Omnics, but was stopped by Pharah and shut down again.
The second candidate
Ramattra
Ramattra is a product of Anubis, but when he gained sentience, he fled the battlefield and found the Shambali, who welcomed him and taught him the ways of peace. There, he would meet and befriend Zenyatta, though an incident in the villages of Nepal almost caused his death. Now disillusioned with peaceful coexistence with humanity, he left the Shambali and formed Null Sector with Lanet, Zera, and Nameless. From there, he launched an attack on Kings Row, but was stopped by Overwatch. Lanet died in the crossfire, and Zera and Nameless abandoned Ramattra.
Years later, Ramattra built up another army and launched attacks across the world, capturing Omnics by the thousands and transporting them somewhere, though he would later retreat when a new power player (Vendetta) began their campaign, and he shared a talk with Zenyatta before separating once again.
What makes them Heinous?
Anubis
This AI attacked the entire world because humans were destroying the planet, and has killed upwards of millions during the Omnic Crisis. And decades later, it tried to break itself out of Helix Security by brainwashing Omnics again, though it was stopped.
Ramattra
Kinda the same as Anubis, only that he launched a war against humanity because they were killing his race. He attacked several countries in the name of "peace", but through violence, and mass kidnapping and brainwashing. He also considered partnering with Doomfist, who is a terrorist, and had them kidnap Zenyatta so they could talk.
Heinous Standards?
Anubis
This thing is responsible for almost everything that has happened in the present day of Overwatch. Roadhog's extremely heinous act of blowing up half of Australia over being moved was because Anubis forced Aurora to grant all Omnics sentience, thereby having the Australian government give them a home. Maximilien taking over most of Monte Carlo was also because Anubis indirectly granted him sentience. Global racism towards Omnics? Because Anubis made them feared. Ramattra doing what he's doing today? Anubis built him. It definitely shatters the standards with just how much it affects the present day.
Ramattra
Ramattra has an army much larger than Doomfist's organization, so he can't be compared to him, nor can he be compared to Roadhog due to resource disparity as well. The only thing he has to compete with is Anubis, and they both have armies capable of global warfare. However, Ramattra stands out enough due to also orchestrating mass brainwashing and kidnapping of Omnics, which is something Anubis didn't do. Ramattra has stated that his neural suppressors don't kill them, but seeing how removing one does while leaving it on renders an Omnic comatose, he likely puts them in a fate worse than death, which, again, allows him to stand out.
What makes them Inconsistent?
Anubis
Simple. It has no clearly defined personality to it. What's preventing it from being in the purgatory is that Aurora gave ALL Omnics sentience, and I'm pretty sure that 'all' includes Anubis, even if it's not a typical Omnic. The second reason Anubis is inconsistent is because it was only doing what it was told to do, which was 'Protect the planet'. It's the researchers' fault for not telling it 'Protect the planet AND humans'.
Ramattra
First of all, Ramattra is EXTREMELY tragic, so much so that he can't even be NPE. He was created to fight in a war he had no choice in, and immediately after he achieved sentience, he was hunted because his kind (R-7000 Ravager units) led the war, and when he found some form of peace with the Shambali, he almost lost his closest friend to humans. While trying to rescue Omnics, he launched the Kings Row uprising as a test, and lost Lanet to the crossfire. He's constantly surrounded by loss and grief, and it's the sole reason he's trying to fight humanity.
Secondly, he's a well-intentioned extremist, as he does have a point about humanity killing off his kind, and how no one's doing enough to stop it. He is waging war because of his beliefs, but given how he's deliberately leaving humans alone if they don't fight back, and how the racism has been going on for decades with no chance of improving, he's at least somewhat justified in his approach.
Thirdly, he genuinely respects Zenyatta and wishes they didn't have to go their separate ways, expressing this to him multiple times. Fourth, he has standards against abandoning others, which is the reason he despises Maximilien. And the fifth reason, albeit a minor one, is that he was reluctant to wage war on humanity, trying every peaceful method he could before escalating. He's not a monster, but he's willing to go to extreme lengths of all else fails.
Consensus?
A firm Yes for both.
