I'm gonna find... and I'm gonna kill... every last one of them.
~ Ellie swearing vengeance against Abby's group for killing Joel.
A real psycho. Imagine going to extreme lengths just to avenge someone who is already dead and doing the most vile and debased crimes that you never thought you would do one day.

Hello. This will be my first proposal on the wiki. Thanks for the admin RubyDoesStuff for adding me to the whitelist.

This is Ellie from the video games, as the TV one may not stand out.

What is The Last of Us?[]

It is a game series set in a post apocalyptic U.S. after a mutated cordyceps fungus infects humans and turns them into aggressive zombie-like creatures. The people who survived are willing to do anything to survive the aftermath.

Who is Ellie?[]

She is one of the main protagonists. She is naturally immune to the fungus that has devastated humanity, making crucial in creating the vaccine. She appears to be just newbie teenager who fights to survive in Part 1, but everything changes for her in Part 2 when she takes a vengeful path and becomes more corrupted.

What has she done?[]

In the first game, she does not commit anything exceptionally cruel or villainous, as her kills are primarily defensive or done out of survival, and kills infected, raiders, cannibals, and many threats who intend to kill or harm her or Joel. Though she becomes more skilled in combat and kills when necessary, she still had standards that she wouldn't cross at the time, especially compared to most people surviving in their world.

Everything changes after she witnesses Abby Anderson brutally beat Joel to death in front of her. Ellie becomes consumed by rage and vows to kill every member of Abby’s group responsible for Joel’s murder, which shapes the entirety of her behavior throughout Part II. Ellie shoots Owen (who tries to twist her gun), and kills Mel with a knife. Mel dies and is revealed to have been pregnant at the time. This event was a turning point for Ellie. She kills numerous WLF soldiers, Seraphites, and guards throughout Seattle. She also kills Abby's dog in self defense, and part of the reason was to spite her.

Ellie later confronts Abby at the theatre where she almost got Dina brutally killed by the hands of Abby, and Abby spares both Ellie and Dina, giving them a chance to leave her, which should've been a sign for Ellie that she should drop her grudge, not to mention that she lost many people she cares about because of this path.

Ellie is given a chance to heal to drop her grudge and lives on a quiet farm with Dina and baby JJ, and living to peace. She doesn't let go of her revenge when Dina tried repeatedly to help her move on, even after Jesse dies and Tommy gets paralyzed. Dina also tried to convince her that this won't bring back Joel, but she still continued to hunt Abby down regardless. Ellie cannot move on from Joel’s death. Despite Dina’s pleading, Jesse’s death, and Tommy’s permanent paralysis, Ellie leaves the family she built and abandons their stable life to resume her pursuit of Abby. This decision costs her everything.

Later in Santa Barbara, she is captured by the Rattlers, a sadistic group known for enslaving people and chaining them. After she escapes, she aggressively interrogates one of the Rattlers for Abby’s location. Once he gives her the information, Ellie shoots him despite him no longer being a threat to her or anyone, although he deserved it. She kills many rattlers who guard the place in brutal ways to reach Abby.

After she reaches Abby and finds her stranded to a pole at a beach, she frees her not to make up for what she has done, but to settle the final score between her and Abby once and for all. Abby refuses to fight, which makes Ellie put her knife to Lev’s throat to provoke Abby into fighting her. the two fight to death, ending with Ellie nearly killing Abby by drowning her until she realizes that this is not what Joel wanted and lets her and Lev leave alive, and Ellie returns home. It is also implied that Abby will be traumatized for the rest of her life by Ellie's actions.

How does Ellie stand out?[]

Heinous standards[]

She has to compete with:

  • Joel who doomed the entire humanity to prevent the Fireflies from sacrificing Ellie to create a vaccine that could cure mankind, and killed Abby's father, which led to the events of Part 2.
  • David who cannibalized hundreds to thousands of people just to survive and harmed many minors.
  • the Rattler who enslaved survivors and put them into a fate worse than death by stranding them to a pole and letting them die slowly, one of them was Abby and Lev.
  • Isaac Dixon who attempted to commit a genocide against the Seraphites and nearly killed Abby.

Resources Comparison[]

Ellie has lower resources than the Rattler, Isaac, and David, as they all have a group of men who benefit them, which enables them to spread their harm and influence to a wider degree, which makes it easier for them to commit atrocities.

Intent[]

She still compares to Joel. Most of Joel's victims were either cannibals or Hunters, which were bad people. He kills the Fireflies but their numbers were significantly lower than the Cannibals or Hunters, compared to Ellie, who has the same resources, she beats an innocent woman to death and almost hurts a child, acts that Joel himself never committed, and kills a large number of the WLF, which makes her stand out, and her kills were driven by vengeance. Joel kills out of protection for the people he loves, and some post apocalyptic people who are (survivors who kill to survive), Ellie just wants to avenge Joel’s death, which leads her to target people who may not be hostile but are connected by association like Nora, Owen, and Mel. Joel was already dead and her vengeful path did not bring him back.

Several of the WLF weren't harming Ellie, and they were minding their own business and just trying to survive, but Ellie brutally kills a large number of them just to pass through them, not because they actually attacked her. She also brutally hits Nora to death with a pipe who was defenseless, and she was willing to kill an innocent child just to exact her revenge.

Personal Villainy[]

She has an extreme personal villainy towards Abby for killing nearly all of her friends and the people she loved, including her pet, as Abby was seen being saddened by Owen and Mel's deaths, and coerced Abby to fight her to death by threatening to kill Lev, whom she cared for. She also almost killed Abby herself.

While Joel killing Abby's father could surpass Ellie's personal villainy towards Abby, Joel did not know that the surgeon was Abby's father and wasn't aware of Abby's existence, he just killed him to save Ellie, While Ellie killed a large number of Abby's group and her friends just for revenge.

How is she inconsistent?[]

Upon realising that all of what she had done and all the harm she caused did not bring Joel back and made her lose her loved ones too.

Upon realising that all of what she had done and all the harm she caused did not bring Joel back and made her lose her loved ones too.

First, she's a grey zoned survivor extremist who is also capable of doing good things, and examples include is protecting Joel when he was injured, preventing David from cannibalizing more people, and being willing to sacrifice herself to save humanity. She even partially redeems herself at the end of Part 2 where she abandons her revenge and spares Abby, which makes also capable of compassion. It is also implied that she feels remorse for her actions at end of Part 2.

She also felt remorse when she realized that Mel is pregnant and got traumatized for seconds upon finding out about the fact.

She cares about several people including Joel whom she protects multiple times and risks her life numerous times to protect him and his death was the main reason behind her killing spree in Part 2, Riley who is her childhood friend, Dina and JJ whom she willed to do anything to make sure they are safe, Jesse who felt sad for his death, and Tommy who she felt like a father figure. She also mourned Tess's death.

She became visibly devastated when she learned that Joel killed all the fireflies to prevent them from sacrificing her to create a vaccine, and she believed that she was meant to save the world, and got angry at Joel because she felt that she was betrayed by him.

She has strong standards against The Rattler and David's actions, as she was disgusted by the latter's cannibalism and perverted tendencies, and treated The Rattler and his friend with hostility when she found out what they do.

She's also very sympathetic as as she lost almost everyone she loves, and her purpose of life was taken away by Joel, and she suffered immense trauma from David.

Verdict[]

Yes to her.
