Crazy twist this was
This MIGHT end up being my first rejected proposal but I feel like she deserves a discussion just due to how brutal she is.
What's the work
Hubie Halloween is a 2020 comedy movie by Adam Sandler. Yet this one is one of his better movies. Set in the town of Salem, Hubie's hated by pretty much the entire town. However, he still does his best to keep everyone safe. And he ends up being necessary for this specific Halloween when he finds himself looking for a REAL "killer".
Who is Mrs. Dubios?
The mother of the main protagonist, Mrs. Dubois is a protective single mother of her son. Mrs. Dubois loves Hubie but encourages her son to find his courage to stand up against his bullies. She stays at home while her son is out patrolling the neighborhood to keep everyone safe... or so it seems.
Come the end of the movie, it's revealed Mrs. Dubios is actually the mysterious kidnapper seen throughout the film. She captured high school student Micheal Mundi, Hubie's former classmates Lester and Mary Hennessey and Hubie's biggest bully, Mr. Landolfa. She took the 4 bullies to her house and tied them up in the backyard. It's then revealed that she called the news crew to get them to film what's about to happen; she plans to BURN the bullies ALIVE as a message to the entire town not to mess with her son.
Even Hubie himself is horrified and tells his mother this is excessive but she feels it necessary to fight back against the bullies for her son. As the cops are about to arrive, she decides to go ahead and get it done with; having already poured gasoline, she lights a match and launches it at her captives, as they beg for Hubie to save them. At the last second, he does and the police arrive. The bullies STILL insult Hubie despite him saving them, leading to her calling them out for their behavior and admit they admit their insecurities to why they bully her son. After they have a heel realization and she gives some final words of encouragement to her son, she tricks everyone by pulling the "Frankenstien" move and disappears into the night, with the implication she's a witch.
Heinous Standard?
She's the only villain in the movie, so she SETS the standard.
The question for this is simple; does she pass the baseline? Now an attempted kill count of 4 people? I'd normally say no to that.
But attempted murder CAN be enough IF it's a brutal enough attempt. Now I don't know about you but attempting to BURN multiple alive? One of whom is just a teenager? That's enough for me.
And it'd be one thing if her victims ACTUALLY deserved it but even Hubie himself notes "this is too much". He would've been fine with her simply pranking them back in revenge, not attempting mass murder.
What makes her Inconsistent?
For one, she's too much of an extremist. She's not evil or anything, she genuinely wants to protect her son Hubie from all of his bullies for his own safety. That's why she had the new crews arrive too, to send a message to leave her son alone.
She also obviously loves Hubie and shows sadness for the death of her husband briefly too. She's genuinely affable to other people as well, as she ONLY targets those who bullied her son.
She also isn't taken seriously between her out of pocket shirts and her escape by shouting "Frankenstien!"
Lastly, after the bullies have a change of heart, she redeems herself and leaves, trusting Hubie to take care of himself from now on.
Final verdict?
A weak yes
