Seven. Seven human souls, and King ASGORE will become a god. Six. That's how many we have collected thus far. Understand? Through your seventh and final soul, this world will be transformed. First, however, as is customary for those who make it this far... I shall tell you the tragic tale of our people. It all started, long ago...
... No, you know what? SCREW IT! WHY SHOULD I TELL THAT STORY WHEN YOU'RE ABOUT TO DIE!?! NGAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
~ Undyne's speech during her final encounter in the Neutral Route.

Undyne is a major character in the hit indie RPG Undertale.

She is the leader of the Royal Guard and serves as the right-hand to Asgore Dreemurr. She is a fierce and determined monster who is hellbent on getting the last human soul needed to break the barrier and reignite the war between humans and monsters, allowing the monsters to go free and to deliever justice upon their oppressors.

Her Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Her Heinous?[]

  • She is the leader of the Royal Guard, with her role entailing that she trains monsters into becoming fighters, with the guard's goal being to make them strong enough in order to kill humans. These guards are seen during multiple points throughout the game, such as the dogs in Snowdin, as well as Royal Guards 1 & 2 in Hotland, making her responsible for their attempts on the player/Frisk's life.
  • Unlike her boss, Undyne is incredibly determined to see the end of humanity, with her putting all of her effort into getting the last soul needed to break the barrier. By comparison, Asgore has been actively trying to stop this from happening, trying to give himself any excuse he can to not kill the last human.
  • Throughout Waterfall, she repeatedly tries to pursue the player, attacking them multiple times with her spears and proving to be one of the most active adversaries that the player has to face within the underground.
  • In the "Queen Undyne" ending, she overthrows Toriel and becomes the new ruler of the underground after Asgore was killed, with her forcing the former queen into exile and ordering the monsters to kill any human who falls into the underground.
  • While characters such as Flowey and Chara are more heinous than her, Undyne has less resources than the both of them, as they are godlike beings who are able to bend time at their will (or at least formerly for Flowey). In comparison, Undyne is just a really strong boss monster.

What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]

  • She's a well-intentioned extremist/anti-villain, as her genocidal ambitions come from a genuine want to see Monsterkind go free and get vengeance upon humanity.
  • She is honorable, as even despite her relentless attempts to kill the player, she was still willing to give them a spear to defend themselves so that they can at least fight back. She also briefly stopped chasing them so they could talk to Papyrus on the phone once he calls them.
  • She is On & Off and/or has redeemed herself in certain routes, such as in the Genocide Route where she became Undyne the Undying in order to try and stop the genocidal human from wiping everything and everyone out. She also redeemed herself in multiple routes, most prominently in the True Pacifist route where she befriends Frisk and helps them take down Flowey.
  • She cares deeply for Monsterkind, with there being several specific examples of her caring for them, such as:
    • Asgore: Who she is fiercely loyal towards and is willing to fight tooth and nail to see his original goal through and has shown on repeated occasion to deeply value his feelings and respect.
    • Papyrus: Who she is shown to be protective of and is genuinely aggravated when she suspects that the player had killed him on the Neutral Route, so much so that she ditches her over the top introduction when meeting them for the first time.
    • Alphys: Who she is shown to be genuinely in love with.
    • Monster Kid: Who she was willing to stop her chase of the player in order to save them from falling to their death and sacrificed herself to save them from being killed by the player in the genocide route.
  • She has genuine standards, as despite wanting to enact war on humanity, she doesn't believe the entire race deserves to go extinct, as seen by how she willingly threw away her genocidal ambitions in order to stop the player in the genocide route.
  • Despite mostly being taken seriously when it comes to her want to destroy humanity, she still has many comedic moments that detract from her villainy, such as when she interrupts her own speech during her final encounter in Waterfall in exchange for being over the top, as well as when she willingly stopped her chase of the human when they were getting a phone call, among other moments like burning her own house down.

Trivia[]

  • Undyne was initially rejected due to it being believed that she failed the standards, however, once it was pointed out that she largely acted as Asgore's brawn who was even more determined to see humanity destroyed than he was, and was the most active threat to Frisk during her section of the game, she was subsequently reproposed and approved.
