Trevor Philips (born 1965) is one of the three main protagonists of Grand Theft Auto V as well as a main character in Grand Theft Auto Online.
He is a criminally insane and psychotic crime lord and the titular founder of his weapons company "Trevor Philips Enterprises". Additionally, Trevor is Michael De Santa's best friend as well as Franklin Clinton. He is also the archenemy of Steve Haines and Wei Cheng.
He was voiced by Steven Ogg.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Make Him Heinous?[]
- While he has plenty of comedic moments, most of them don't detract from his actions and he is still taken seriously within the story.
- Whilst unambiguously insane, he still retains functioning moral agency, evidenced by his clear high intellect and ability to plan and conceal crimes.
- Even as a child, he had already shown violent tendencies, such as burning down a shopping mall after his parents left him there and sodomizing the hockey teacher with a stick for not letting him participate in the team.
- As an adult, he would become a criminal along with Michael and Brad and rob several banks across the United States, most likely killing many cops in the process.
- In a blind rage, he slaughtered every police officer at the place, once he thought Michael was dead, and then used a woman as a hostage.
- He formed a drug empire in the north of the state of San Andreas, being basically ruthless with almost all his enemies.
- Prior to the events of the game, he manipulated Wade into working with him, after luring his friends out into the mountains and killing every one of them.
- Also prior to the events of the game, he destroyed Ron's healthy and happy twelve-year marriage by manipulating him into thinking his wife was holding him back in life. This led to her dumping Ron and leaving Ron broke from having to pay off settlement fees to her. Ron was then forced to work for Trevor as he then had no choice left in life, and much like Wade, he would eventually start smoking meth.
- He constantly terrorizes Ron and Wade, even punching Wade in the face at times, just so they can give him what he wants.
- His overall treatment towards the duo is extremely hypocritical of Trevor, as he despises people who mistreat their loved ones, which was one reason why he felt betrayed when he found out Michael faked his own death to leave the criminal life.
- He orders the GTA Online Protagonist to go on various missions to grow the criminal empire of Trevor Phillips Industries, which includes slaughtering the competition, including the Lost MCs.
- He had sex with Ashley Butler, the girlfriend of Johnny Klebitz, and when Klebitz confronted him about this, Trevor threw him to the ground, threw the bottle he was holding in his face, and stomped on his head repeatedly until he was turned to a pulp, killing him.
- Although Johnny was yelling at him and this was right after Trevor, in a state of shock, discovered Michael was still alive, Trevor went too far and it does not excuse this action at all. In fact, he even pokes fun at the Lost MC afterwards because a piece of Johnny's brain was left on his boot, and went on to kill many of their members.
- This also makes him one of the few villains in the series to successfully assassinate one of the leads, along with Ricardo Diaz, Steve Haines, and Devin Weston (Haines and Weston being not canon).
- After killing Johnny, Trevor massacred almost every member of the Lost MC to get rid of his rivals, without any remorse.
- He throws Ortega, the leader of the Aztecas, and his truck into a river just to show him that he now owns northern San Andreas and, depending on the player's choices, Trevor can kill Ortega.
- Even if the player spares Ortega at first, you still have to kill him in the ensuing shootout either way.
- He slaughtered the O'Neil brothers after discovering they were working for Wei Cheng's Chinese mob. He also started to strangle Wei Cheng's son and then beat his head against a pole without remorse, even though Wei Cheng's son had done nothing wrong.
- He leads several people into the Altruist Cult, a group of cannibal assassins who almost certainly kills the people Trevor leads, and Trevor himself seems to be aware of it.
- He ruined Floyd's life and terrorized him in all of their interactions, despite Floyd never doing anything bad to Trevor or anybody else (it was even shown that Floyd still showed remorse for stealing a pencil from someone in elementary school).
- The second he met Floyd, he barged into Floyd's apartment to claim it as his residence, and he threatened him to buy him some alcohol. Trevor would then trash the apartment overtime.
- He caused Floyd to get beaten up by a gang of Merryweather guards, and he left him behind.
- This act is especially hypocritical and heinous from Trevor's side, since he hates traitors.
- He raped Floyd, and whilst Word of God confirms this, it is evident in one of his switch cutscenes showing he forced him to wear feminine clothing. To make things worse, Floyd can be heard crying afterwards, shouting certain things like "I'm so sorry, Debra!" and "Make it stop! Make him go!". This, as well as the sign and pictures on the wall next to where Floyd lied and Trevor patting his behind right after saying "You're spooning me next time", made it clear he had done it.
- Trevor's interference in Floyd's life would overall lead to Floyd's eventual demise, as his wife, Debra, held both him and Trevor at gunpoint, and Floyd and Debra would then end up dead afterwards. On top of that, Trevor lied to Wade about Floyd's death, stating he "disappeared" and "will probably not return."
- He forced Michael back into the criminal life and refused to accept that he left it in order to look after his family.
- When he discovers that Tracey de Santa, Michael's daughter, was going to participate in Fame or Shame, he interrupts her audition with Michael, and forced Lazlow Jones to dance in his underwear while recording it with a cell phone.
- Although to be fair, Tracey was going to make herself a laughing stock across the country because of her terrible dancing, and Lazlow danced inappropriately with her.
- Of the three protagonists of the game, he is the only one who can activate the rampages, having a total of five massacres to different gangs, such as the Ballas, the Vagos, etc. Even in one of these missions they involve a rampage of the army itself.
- He brutally tortures Mr. K on Steve Haines' orders to obtain information about an Azerbaijani named Tahir Javan, despite the fact that Mr. K was willing to provide information without the need for torture. The torture consists of beating him with a wrench (sometimes even in the testicles), electrocuting him, pulling out a tooth and drowning him in gasoline.
- Trevor can even kill Mr. K should he go too far and his heart rate stops, resulting in Trevor needing to give him an adrenaline syringe.
- To make matters worse, he blithely admits that torture is ineffective and just a means of fun, flat-out telling Mr. K that he enjoyed what he did to him.
- He staged the hit on Merryweather just so he could steal a super weapon and then sell it to the Chinese mafia. Had it not been for Lester returning it, this would've made him, Michael and Franklin the most wanted criminals in the country.
- He slaughtered a large number of police and IAA agents along with Michael and Franklin, just to steal the money they were making from selling drugs.
- He cut off Martin Madrazo's ear after he refused to pay him for killing his cousin Javier along with Michael, who was planning to testify against him in an upcoming trial in court. Although to be fair, Madrazo deserved it for being nothing more but an abusive, manipulative and homicidal drug lord.
- Additionally, while it was for a good reason (though partly because he was angry at not getting paid), he also kidnapped his wife Patricia after seeing how abusive he was towards her and threatened to cut off his other ear if he saw him abusing her again.
- Under orders from Devin Weston he stole several cars for him, and expected to get a payment out of this.
- He slaughtered an entire plane full of Merryweather soldiers just to steal one of their payloads.
- He staged the Paleto Bay hit to steal a large amount of money and, along with Franklin and Michael, massacred a large number of police officers who had come to arrest them.
- He is a cannibal and this is evidenced numerous times, as he tries to get Michael to eat a bowl of soup with a human eyeball in it, and one of his switch cutscenes has him throwing up in a fountain saying "never eat Indian people", with Trevor also telling the Online Protagonist that he wants to eat them if they fail. He also states to Michael that he eats hipsters âfor funâ. His relationship with the cannibalistic Altruist Cult is also telling.
- He let Michael be tortured and almost brutally murdered by Wei Cheng's Chinese mob after he learned the truth about his "death".
- This is understandable, though, as Michael got Brad killed (even if he deserved it for his sadism), and was either willing to have Trevor killed or incarcerated, despite their close friendship.
- He assaults an FIB building and killed several agents.
- He also assaults Merryweather's army and massacred a large number of agents.
- He killed the manager of the Vanilla Unicorn strip club stuffing his corpse in a refrigerator and taking over the club himself.
- In a switch cutscene, after exposing himself to someone, he possibly attempted to force himself onto that individual while giving chase to them on the Los Santos River.
- Despite the high Heinous Standards of the GTA series, Trevor still stands out due to his limited resources compared to villains like Clifford and Avon Hertz, as well as how brutal his various actions are, his high body count, and his sex crimes; plus, he is from a separate universe to Carl Johnson, Tommy Vercetti, Toni Cipriani, Victor Vance and Claude Speed so he doesn't have to compete with their much higher kill counts.
What Make Him Inconsistent?[]
- While it doesn't justify all of his actions throughout the game, Trevor is fairly tragic, as his mother was an emotionally abusive prostitute, while his father was physically abusive towards him, even abandoning him in a mall. These are clearly played for sympathy, as he is implied to hallucinate his mother's visit in one mission, having a complete mental breakdown.
- He additionally has some legitimate insecurities that are played for sympathy, such as proclaiming to Michael that he fears nobody cares about him. According to Trevor, he never had a fixed father and spent much of his life living in different places, which he explains why he is so psychotic in the game.
- Despite his very impulsive and unpredictable nature, he holds legitimate care and respect for several people in his life:
- He deeply loves his mother and is willing to do whatever it takes to please her, and cried heavily when he no longer found her inside his house.
- He fell in love with Patricia, genuinely bonding with her and was in tears when he has to return her to Martin. He was also upset at the way he was treating his wife and told Martin to treat her right otherwise he would come and rip off his other ear, and when Patricia texts him later in the story, he asks her if Martin is treating her ok and if he isn't, he will break his fingers.
- General animosity aside, Trevor has shown to still care for his friend Michael. He demonstrated this when he saved his life in a shootout with FIB agents in "The Wrap Up" and Ending B where he refuses to go through with betraying his friend when Franklin asked for his assistance in killing him. If the player chooses ending C and has Trevor and Michael reunite, Trevor will eventually reconcile with Michael for everything that happened.
- He also cares deeply for Michaelâs children, most of all Tracey. This is demonstrated in the mission "Fame or Shame", where Trevor and Michael meet again and when they find out that she had gone to Fame or Shame to potentially embarrass herself sexually on national TV, Trevor immediately heads towards the Maze Bank Arena to stop her, and shows anger at Michael for not getting mad at it. When confronting Lazlow, he reveals that he had promised to protect Tracey at all costs for people who would hurt her that when she was just a girl. He will also not allow Jimmy to drink alcohol when they hang out together. However, he will still insult them because of their flaws, such as Jimmy's vacillation between hating and loving Michael as well as his weight.
- Despite treating him awfully, even sexually assaulting him, he still cared about Floyd, as he looked with pity at him when Debra mockingly decries Floyd as a failure as a man, and during "Scouting the Port," he tried to tell Floyd that his relationship with Debra was abusive and that he needed to leave her.
- Although he is very abusive towards them, he still has a genuine friendship with both Ron and Wade, even giving Wade full access to the Vanilla Unicorn strip club.
- He has a genuine friendship with both Franklin and Lamar, and has opened up to them about his deepest insecurities.
- He is friends with Cletus, treats him with genuine respect, and has gone on a few hunting trips with him.
- Despite being hostile towards nearly everybody he meets, he also shows genuine affability toward people, as he is always honest with his dealings with others. More examples included:
- In "Trevor Philips Industries", he told Chef to show some manners to Tao Cheng and his translator, referring to them as their "guests".
- He acts pretty causal towards the GTA Online Protagonist.
- He tries to bond with others around him due to his abandonment issues, such as his conversation with Mr. K and his crewmates while on the way to rob the Paleto Bay bank.
- He has standards against racism and corruption. During the mission "Eye in the Sky", he criticizes the police for arresting his "African American friend" (Franklin) for a minor infraction and says the LSPD disgusts him. He also appears to be appalled by Merryweather's actions, which is what serves as one of his motivators to continuously target their enterprises. He also was disgusted from a randon stranger who thanked Trevor for having sex with his own wife.
- He's On & Off, as not all of his actions are evil and has even committed heroic acts like protecting Tracey from Lazlow (who was making her dance inappropriately for him), saving Lamar from Ballas when Stretch set him up for Franklin's sake, and killing Steve Haines and Devin Weston for their crimes. He also tends to have genuine Pet the Dog moments at times.
- As extremely back-handed as it was, he did drive Mr. K to the nearest airport rather than killing him like he was supposed to (even if it's played for black comedy, given Trevor told Mr. K to become an anti-torture advocate).
- Although, Trevor still went along with Mr. K's torture and seems indifferent to the man's plight, suggesting he did this more because he didn't like to be told what to do. In fact, he bluntly states this in response to Mr. K asking why he tortured him.
- As extremely back-handed as it was, he did drive Mr. K to the nearest airport rather than killing him like he was supposed to (even if it's played for black comedy, given Trevor told Mr. K to become an anti-torture advocate).
- If Franklin decides to kill Trevor in Ending A, his death is played for sympathy as he's effectively betrayed by both people he thought he could trust. To hammer his point, Trevor states that he is surrounded by "Judas" (Franklin and Michael). To make matters worse, Trevor's death shook both Franklin and Michael to the core that the latter decides to take an indefinite break from their friendship.
- He has a huge sense of honor, as he is extremely loyal towards the people he cares about, and heavily despises traitors. The main reason he hated Michael throughout the game was because he betrayed both him and Brad to escape his life of crime, and was even angered when he found out that he got Brad killed while he faked his death.
- Also, in Ending B, despite still wanting to kill him at the time, he was angered when Franklin decides to betray his mentor Michael, as he was the only person who ever showed respect towards him, and states he has had enough traitors in his life and that they "deserve each other". He also severs ties with him after doing the deed.
- He also shows honor by respecting his friends and his partners, and tells them to show respect towards others, especially women. This is proven when he told Floyd to show respect towards Wade for what he'd been through.
- Nonetheless, it is should be noted that Trevor acts rather hypocritical, since he openly admitted how he was ready to backstab Michael in the past after the latter got busy with his family and chose to gradually distant from criminal life, as well as how he is extremely abusive towards Ron and Wade, treating them like slaves if anything, and deceived mercenaries by accusing own innocent friend Floyd merely for sake of stealing information from them. Cherry tops on it how he kidnapped Patricia, a women, in pretty harsh manner just to spite her husband (even if he subsequently developed close bond with her).
- Despite how extremely back-handed it was, he displays a 'Pet the Dog' moment in that he lets Mr. K. escape, despite that he was supposed to kill him when he was done torturing him.
- This is downplayed, however, as he was apathetic to Mr. K's suffering, telling him to forget his family and not seeming to show any concern over him falling down the stairs and potentially dying, and in general, not caring over the extreme ordeal the man has endured, with this being more of an opportunity to flip off Steve Haines, than anything.
- Although more likely, it's heavily implied that the reason why Trevor drove Mr. K to the airport is because he knew that if he drove Mr. K to his home with his family, Steve Haines would've found out about it eventually and would've got them all killed, meaning he was actually saving Mr. K and his family.
- It's worth noting that if Trevor accidentally kills Mr. K during the torture sequence, he does show some remorse, angrily asking Steve Haines if "torturing a seemingly-innocent guy to death" made him a moron and stating he doesn't even know why he did it. Although, this scene is non-canon and results in a mission failure.
