Thomas Jasper "Tom" Cat Sr. is one of the two titular main protagonists (alongside Jerry Mouse) of the Tom and Jerry franchise.
He is a cat of unknown breed who is always tasked with hunting Jerry Mouse, a slippery rodent who often escapes from his claws. Under the threats of his owners, Tom often comes up with different schemes to get and eat Jerry, but most of his plans end in failure or make him a target of Spike Bulldog. He is Jerry's rival and best friend.
He was voiced by the late Harry E. Lang in his first appearances and then by the late William Hanna, who has been replaced by countless voice actors since then but archive recordings of Hanna are still used to this day for some of Tom's noises.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Occasionally torments Jerry even if unprovoked.
- Sometimes tries to eat Jerry's friends as well, like Quacker Duck, Goldie Goldfish and Cuckoo Canary.
- In "The Milky Waif", swats Nibbles with a flyswatter on the behind though this might be unintentional because Nibbles didn't run away.
- In "Tom's Photo Finish", frames Spike for stealing a chicken from the refrigerator and tries to dispose of the photos Jerry took that proved Spike's innocence.
- In the Tom & Jerry: The Ultimate Game of Cat and Mouse! video game, kidnaps and locks up Jerry's nephew Tuffy inside an attic trunk.
- In "Tom's Mermouse Mess-Up", sells Jerry's friend, a Mermouse, to a museum for profit.
- In Tom and Jerry: The Movie, locks Jerry inside his hole, which nearly led Jerry to die crusher when the house they were in was demolished. He also traps Jerry out of spite to prevent him from eating with him, Puggsy and Frankie and later gets into a fight with Jerry when Tom cuts a steak of meat for him and gives a little slice to Jerry at Robyn Starling's house.
- In the Tom and Jerry in Mouse Attacks video game, kidnaps Jerry's loved ones and traps Jerry under a cup during a minigame.
- In Tom and Jerry: Blast Off to Mars!, destroys the Martian city, leading King Thingg of the Martians to declare war against the Earth and send the Invic-a-tron to capture all humans to likely dispose of them afterwards.
- In Tom and Jerry: The Fast and the Furry, Tom commits his most infamous acts and Moral Event Horizon crosses by cheating on the Fabulous Super Race. His cheating leads to Soccer Mom losing her car in quicksand and being left stranded in the jungle before being apparently devoured by the insects there, leaving her children orphaned. He then, in an attempt to prevent Jerry, Grammy and Squirty from beating him in Australia, uses a laser to cut through the land, sinking half of the country, an act that inevitably killed millions of people. Lastly, while flying over Borneo's oceans, Tom tries to pop the balloon carrying Jerry's car, but ends up popping the balloon from Grammy and Squirty, which sends them thousands of feet to their deaths due to not having any parachutes.
- While Grammy and Squirty antagonized him through the race and Soccer Mom ran him over early on, that doesn't justify killing them (especially Soccer Mom, who ran over him unintentionally and didn't antagonize him). Plus, while he didn't intend to kill Grammy and Squirty, he still showed no remorse as they fell to their deaths, in addition to early on, he thought that he had killed them by throwing Squirty into a whale with Grammy following to rescue him.
- And even though it was only meant to stop Jerry from winning the race and he didn't know Soccer Mom got caught in his trick, he still showed no regard and remorse for this.
- In Tom and Jerry: Shiver Me Whiskers, doesn't warn the pirate crew from which he is part of about the curse he accidentally brought, leading the pirates to take over the ship and force Tom, his captain and his crew into a rowboat.
- In Tom and Jerry: A Nutcracker Tale, after being promoted by the King of the Cats to Captain of the Guard, Tom crashes Jerry's party, locks La Petite Ballerina up inside a birdcage and traps the toys, enjoying at how he traps and enslaves them. He then tries to prevent Jerry and his friends from reaching the star.
- In "24 Karat Kat", he tries to steal Jerry's alleged gold with the assistance of Butch Cat.
- In "Spike Gets Skooled", blames Spike for the house's mess, leading him to be thrown out of the house for that.
- In the live-action Tom & Jerry movie, despite assisting Kayla in catching Jerry, Tom does more harm than good and crashes the hotel in which he is working, causing lots of problems for Terrance Mendoza.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Tom is rarely (if ever) taken seriously, since he is a cartoon character whose injuries, iconic yells/yelps of pain and having several humorous lines/moments here and there, are solely played for slapstick humor that makes him very comedic. It's not helping that Tom generally being really clumsy and incompetent as a "rival" is also played up for the show's comedy.
- Tom is on & off with plenty of heroic roles, genuine affability towards other people and has many pet the dog moments.
- Tom is a complete scapegoat, due to occasionally being beaten up and injured oftentimes when he isn't really at fault or receives unjustified torment when Jerry provokes him. Sometimes, he is also played for sympathy.
- In the infamous episode "Blues Cat Blues", he tries to please a female cat and is callously rejected every time until he becomes alcoholic to cope with the rejection, gets depressed, suicidal and ultimately sits on a railway to be run over by a train alongside a depressed Jerry.
- He shows genuine respect to Jerry and Spike, as he is willing to team up with them when a villain is causing trouble and mayhem from both of the three of them. It's even shown a lot of times that he is kind to Jerry, and they do their antics for mutual entertainment.
- He even shows respect to Tuffy. In "Little School Mouse", where Jerry tries to teach Tuffy in outsmarting the cat in several ways, the former instead gets defeated and beaten out by Tom various times, while Tuffy is rewarded for his kindness to him and Tom even becomes one of his students, in the end. This shows that Tom can actually be friendly towards others if he's just treated as such.
- When not being rivals to each other (romantic or otherwise) in some episodes, he instead has a genuine friendship with Butch. He and Tom have a group of friends where they party and pass the time together, either in Tom's house or somewhere else.
- He can be quite mischievous sometimes, where his acts of driving Jerry or Spike insane, are also played up for laughs.
- Besides his cat predatory instincts, he also has understandable motives to catch Jerry. While it's true that Tom can sadistically take pleasure on teasing or hurting the mouse every now and then, or even start the fight, most of the time his antagonism is done due to his owners, especially Mammy Two Shoes, ordering him to do so, since Jerry is technically a pest who steals from and provokes the homeowners. This leads to the tomcat to either get rid of him or get kicked out of the house, with the latter being mostly the case.
- In "That's My Mommy", despite initially trying to eat Quacker by taking an advantage of him believing he's his "mother", he later abandoned it after he saved him from being boiled in a hot water and decide to adopt him as his own by the end of the short.
