Why choose reality when you can have a world of your own making? That's clearly the choice, y'know... I mean come on, we all prefer the easy life. Hehehehe.... You see, all reality ever gives you is boredom and bickery. And no one truly wants to live in a world like that. It's only because they think they have to accept it that they have to buck up deal. There's only one thing that's going to set you apart and let you succeed in life: it's the magic ticket they call "talent". And if you don't have it, then your left to rot in despair. Game over. So wouldn't we better off without this reality crap?
~ Adachi ranting about his motive to the Investigation Team.

Tohru Adachi is the main antagonist of Persona 4 (as well as its 2011-2012 anime adaptation) and the anti-heroic tritagonist of Persona 4 Arena: Ultimax.

While initially appearing as a goofy and light-hearted detective who works with Yu Narukami's uncle, Ryotaro Dojima, he is in truth a sadistic and egotistical serial murderer responsible for the murders happening in Inaba, viewing the murders as a fun distraction to satiate his boredom of living in Inaba, which he calls "Nowheresville".

He is voiced by Mitsuaki Madono in Japanese and Johnny Yong Bosch in English, who also voices Sasori from Naruto and Lelouch in Code Geass.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • While he had a depressing life, with his parents pushing him to have good grades, having to work hard without having any friends at high school, and later after becoming an officer until he was transferred to Inaba due to his incompetence, it does not remotely justify his later actions and is treated as more of a petty excuse for them.
  • Became a police officer purely because he wanted to carry a gun, showing he joined for selfish reasons.
  • Indirectly killed Yamano by pushing her into the TV world. While this was unintentional, he showed no remorse and even laughed about it.
  • Tries to seduce Saki Konishi, a teenage girl, before pushing her into the TV World, killing her like with Yamano.
  • Manipulates Taro Namatame into pushing others into the TV World, which leads to Yukiko, Kanji, Rise, Naoto, and even Nanako (who is just a young child) almost getting killed.
  • When Mitsuo Kubo tries to take the blame for Adachi's murders, out of fear that the murder case would be closed and thus Namatame would stop "saving" people, he throws him into the TV World in an attempt to kill him.
  • Attempts to kill the Investigation Team in the TV World after they find out he is the murder culprit.
  • Almost makes the world fuse with the TV World, which in turn would cause the fog to engulf all of reality and turn everyone into Shadows, essentially killing off humanity and committing omnicide.
  • If Yu is at a high Social Link status with him in Golden, Adachi rejects Yu's request to stop and surrender, and even shoots near him to prove he is not bluffing. He only spares Yu due to thinking the power of friendship is fun, and challenges him to face him with the Investigation Team.
  • In the Accomplice Ending, he has Yu burn one of the two warning letters he sent to his house and blackmails him once he destroys the evidence, despite Yu helping him because he thought of him as a friend.
  • While he has comedic moments, this is before the reveal that he is the killer. Even then, it's nothing but a facade to hide his true nature, and he is taken 100% seriously after the reveal.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • The biggest reason why he can't be NPE or PE is that he redeems himself after his defeat, turning himself in and confessing to his crimes. Dojima said he became a "model prisoner" after being arrested. He later helps Narukami defeat Izanami in the True Ending, put a stop to Sho's plans and assists Yu in defeating Hi-no-Kagutsuchi.
  • In a letter he sent to Yu, he reveals he thinks a lot about Nanako, Dojima, and Yu, showing he does have some sort of care for them. This is also demonstrated in his ending in Persona 4 Arena: Ultimax, where, despite his refusal to admit it out loud, he genuinely values his friendship with Dojima, trying to hide a smile for him when he visits him in prison, and accidentally admits that having a bond "isn't so bad after all."

Trivia[]

  • He is the only Persona 4 villain to be Inconsistently Heinous.
  • He is one of two BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle characters to be Inconsistently Heinous, along with Nu-13.
