~ The Toad revealing his plan to Roddy and Rita. |
The Toad is the main antagonist of Dreamworks' 13th full-length animated feature film Flushed Away, which is also Aardman's third feature film.
He is a xenophobic toad who seeks to wipe out all of the rats in Ratropolis because of his hatred of their species, which was fueled due to being flushed away from his former master's home after being replaced with another rat.
He was voiced by Ian McKellen, who also played Magneto in the X-Men film series.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- During Roddy's first meeting with Rita, he already has his henchmen trying to chase her down so he could obtain the ruby on her person for his collection of expensive English items. This also develops a conflict between the two of them while his henchmen are trying to search for her in the sewers.
- He keeps a collection of rats/former enemies he froze in his fridge, such as thieves, double crossers, or even just general do-gooders, which he reveals to Roddy and Rita before trying to freeze them and add them to his collection because Roddy accidentally broke part of his item collection after insulting it as being "amusing." This indicates that he might have starved some of them.
- He is shown to be rather abusive towards his henchmen, particularly those who are rats (which makes sense considering his hatred of them) as he is seen insulting and kicking them on several occasions.
- After Rita and Roddy stole his master cable, the Toad had his henchmen try to kill them and get it back only for them to fail repeatedly. The second time he sends out henchmen to attack them, it's Le Frog and his gang, who are much more competent and end up causing Rita's boat to be destroyed in the rapids.
- After recapturing Roddy and Rita following the former's return to the surface, he reveals his plan to use the master cable to open the floodgates to release flowing waters into Ratropolis in an attempt to wipe out all the rats residing in it and repopulate the city with his tadpoles.
- He makes one last futile attempt to kill Rita by throwing her into the waves flowing in after getting his foot stuck, frozen on a nitrogen pipe.
- Despite his tragedy, this doesn't justify his act of killing a population of various innocent rats to repopulate them with his own family.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He has a tragic backstory as he used to have a fun life with his former owner, Prince Charles, before getting flushed away after being replaced with a rat as a pet, which is what fuels his hatred for rats and motivates his actions throughout the movie.
- He can be genuinely affable at times as displayed when he did try to become friends with Roddy and showed him his collection after the latter revealed he was from Kensington, while acting uncharacteristically friendly towards him before turning on him after the latter accidentally destroyed the collection.
- He is shown to care for his children/tadpoles as displayed by the fatherly affection he showed them at times.
- He is way too comedic for PE or NPE due to having too many moments in the film where he is played for laughs, such as some running gags in the movie like his sadistic and over-the-top laugh and him accidentally ruining his own plans in the climax.
Trivia[]
- The Toad is, alongside Dr. Fry and Anthony Trumper, one of three Aardman Animations characters to be Inconsistently Heinous.
