You are about to meet Black Spy and White Spy – the two MADdest spies in the whole world. Their antics are almost as funny as the CIA's... When it comes to intrigue, these guys make it way outtrigue. They are the only two spies we know who haven't the sense to come in out of the cold. But they have a ball – mainly trying to outwit each other.

~ from "The All New Mad Secret File on Spy vs. Spy"

The Spies are a duo of rival spies seeking out to kill each other in each strip of the recurring MAD Magazine Skit Spy vs. Spy. They are created by the late comic artist Antonio Prohias who intended to depict the Spies in order to illustrate the pointlessness of people fighting each other in the Cold War and accusing each other as spies. They appeared in every issue of MAD Magazine ever since their debut in MAD #61 and was eventually continued by Peter Kuper until 2022.

Their Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Them Heinous?[]

In General[]

  • While The Spies usually come back in one piece, their schemes are usually over the top in violence in brutality that they constantly seek out to torment and torture each other through their acts of violence against each other.
  • They constantly use bombings, blunt force trauma, and other standard forms of murder to kill each other each strip.

Prohias Era[]

Black Spy[]
  • When being offered food, Black Spy used a dog as a bait to try to see if it was poisoned only for it to end up being robotic and getting poisoned anyways thanks to White Spy's antics.
  • Tortured White Spy by using honey as bait for the ants to eat his foot away while he was bedridden at the hospital.
  • Used White Spy as a billiards hole to fill him up with billiard balls in his stomach.
  • Turned White Spy into Macaroni after squeezing him into a machine.
  • Made White Spy dream about a bomb ticking in his boat, prompting him to jump off the ship... the only problem is that he's actually sleeping in an elevated area next to his window.
  • Hid a lion inside a dynamite to trick White Spy into snapping off its tail after "lighting its flame" before it mauled White Spy to death.
White Spy[]
  • Gifted Black Spy a present that contained an antenna in it, electrocuting him when the lightning came.
  • Sawed Black Spy in half using a large razor blade.
  • Used a microchip to trick Black Spy's superior into thinking Black Spy was threatening them, making them kill him via firing squad.
  • Tricked Black Spy into tickling a woman's leg without her consent, thinking she was the one that offered him the session.
  • Genetically bred a snake and a chicken to make a mutated hybrid in order to ensnare Black Spy in a trap.
  • Lobotomized Black Spy's brains with a monkey, swapping them so he can pull a prank on Black Spy.

1987-1997[]

Black Spy[]
  • Used a wrecking ball pendulum contraption to destroy White Spy's secret weapon factory, killing White Spy in the process.
  • Used a wine bottle to trick White Spy into popping open the cork with a grenade inside.
White Spy[]
  • Rigged his piano to trick Black Spy into playing notes that would activate a nitrogen and glycerin trap that would blow Black Spy up upon ingestion.
  • Rigged Black Spy's hair dryer into a blowtorch in immolate his head upon activation.

Kuper Era[]

  • The comics usually spike up the violence and gory nature of their crimes, showing blood and guts whenever the spies land a kill.
Black Spy[]
  • Used a gate to chop White Spy's bike in half, snapping the rider into a gory mess in an instant.
  • Chopped White Spy into bloody pieces by slamming an entire gate on him.
  • As a disguised therapist, Black Spy gaslit White Spy into believing his enemy wasn't real and his adventures were a result of multitude of trauma from his life and convinced him to drop all his weapons and escape his spy-life while lowering his guard before throwing a knife to stab him in the back.
  • Watched as White Spy seemingly planned to kill himself after being rejected by someone named "Mary", cheering him to jump off the window before White Spy threw an anvil on his head.
  • On White Spy's birthday, Black Spy tricked White Spy into thinking he was celebrating his birthday by sending him a regular birthday cake only to send a heat seeking missile to blow him to pieces.
White Spy[]
  • Splattered Black Spy's front half into pieces using an elevator grinder trap.
  • Microwaved Black Spy inside a large microwave oven.
  • Tormented Black Spy by advertising pictures of himself stabbing Black Spy and posting it everywhere to drive Black Spy into a panic before stabbing him with his bladed shoes when Black Spy tried to stop him.
  • After being drawn a funny picture of himself by his enemy, White Spy sent a missile to Black Spy to even the score only for the easel to bounce back at him and the other window to bounce back the missile towards him, making his bloodied corpse match the silly painting.
  • Convinced garbage workers into throwing a box that had Black Spy in it into the garbage truck, crushing his body in the process.

Cartoon Network[]

  • Stole MAD's 100th Episode and placed a lot of deadly traps to prevent Alfred E. Newmann from taking it back.

Black Spy[]

  • Used his Captain America shield to trigger a switch to activate enough electricity from a power line to conduct White Spy's Thor hammer, electrocuting him in the process.
  • Used a bear trap to ensnare White Spy's hand into his own bomb, blowing him up in the process.
  • Went back in time using the Delorean to turn himself into a dinosaur and return to the future to devour White Spy.
  • Tricked White Spy into stealing his lightsaber only for it to be revealed that there's a third blade stabbing White Spy to death.
  • Tricked White Spy into getting his eye shot out James Bond Style by fabricating a sightseeing scope attraction.

White Spy[]

  • Disguised a large chicken as a large tree to trick Black Spy into stealing its egg and making him get mauled in the process.
  • Use his Spider-Man Arm contraption to crush Black Spy to death.
  • Disguised a minigun as a music box to shoot the bombs Black Spy gave White Spy back at him.
  • Used his pumpkin to shoot Black Spy to death as part of a Jack-O-Lantern contest.
  • After his hand was chopped off by Black Spy's lightsaber, he used the force to punch Black Spy face into a pulp.

What Makes Them Inconsistent?[]

  • Their schemes are always played nothing more than black comedy due to how ridiculously clever and over the top violent they are against each other, coming up with absurd tricks and deception to outwit each other for good violent fun.
  • There are some scenarios where they mellow out towards each other, showing that they somewhat can show genuine affability towards each other even if they usually hate each other's guts such as when Black Spy killed himself to continue their adventures in the afterlife or when White Spy genuinely thought Black Spy wanted to celebrate his birthday.
  • They are loyal to their respective embassies and treat their superiors and peers with respect.
  • They are On & Off, often putting themselves in dangerous positions to try to save civilians from bigger threats.
  • They also show a deep admiration towards Gray Spy who even though they show lust towards her, have enough decency to try to help her when needed.
