~ The Once-Ler declaring his remorselessness for endangering the environment. |
The Once-ler is the main villainous protagonist of the WhySoAnimated YouTube video Biggering Storyboard, based on a deleted song of Illumination's 2012 animated movie The Lorax, which is loosely based on the book of the same name by Dr. Seuss.
While his character in the final version of the film is a Villainous Benchmark, his counterpart from the film's deleted song "Biggering" shows him to be much more aware of his villainous actions and what they were doing than in the final film. A fan storyboard for the song was created by Youtuber WhySoAnimated which further fleshes out his motivations and personality based on the song.
His voice is provided by Gabriel Mann, who also provided the voice of his version from the original demo of The Lorax where the song is from.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- He was the owner a company and multiple factories, leaving him in a position where he was responsible for much environmental pollution.
- The effects of this are not Fridge Horror either in this version, as the devastation, polluted air, desertic wastelands, and animals fruitlessly looking for food are all shown. Three little bears are also shown being killed by cracks forming in the ground and the city itself is covered in smoke. His actions are shown not only endangering the fauna (which are shown in the movie to be sentient), but the people as well.
- In spite of how many times the Lorax tries to call him out on his greed and pride leading him to commit atrocities, he still refused to listen.
- In the final moments of the song, he sang "Who cares if some things are dying?" and "I don't want to hear your crying!", proving that not only was he fully aware of the damage he was causing, but he was perfectly willing to remain apathetic towards it for the sake of further expanding his business.
- Overall, while his incarnation in the final cut of the film was much less aware of what he was doing while expanding his business and was doing so mainly for his family's approval, he was shown to be much more aware of the devastation he was causing in his efforts to grow his business, as well as the fact that he chose to ignore them in favor of focusing on ensuring his business' success.
- He seemed to have been genuinely touched when a newspaper article said that Thneedville was a success, but whether or not it was for the people who were now able to live there or for the pride of knowing that his plan was succeeding is never confirmed.
- Depending on if his backstory is the same as his final version, he might had been motivated by his actions as a result of a desire to please his abusive family, hinted at by the emotional validation he seems to receive through the animatic, but unlike his final version, responsibility is not taken away from him for his actions.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He had at least some affability towards the Lorax as demonstrated when he offered the Lorax to join him in spite of having no real reason to and when the Lorax rejected his offer, he simply looked at him emotionless rather than with anger or contempt.
- At the end of the music, he looked at the damage he caused once again with clear remorse for what he had done to the environment. Going by how the original story ended, the Once-Ler started regretting his actions here (though by this point it's too late to do anything) and eventually redeemed himself, giving a child the last Truffula Seed to be planted and slowly restore the environment from the damage caused by the Once-Ler.
Trivia[]
- He is one of the two versions of the Once-Ler to be Inconsistently Heinous alongside his original demo counterpart, as his official version in the final movie can't be Inconsistently Heinous due to his effect on the environment not being explored in enough detail for him to pass the baseline standard.
