~ The Darkness, a.k.a Amara. |
The Darkness, also called "Amara", is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Azazel) of the Supernatural franchise.
The Darkness is the twin sister to God, representing primordial darkness. The two of them were originally fused as one being, and when they split apart it created the Big Bang, allowing the universe to exist. She was locked away by God at the beginning of time to prevent her from destroying his creations.
When incarnated in human form, she was portrayed by Emily Swallow as a grown woman, Gracyn Shinyei as a prepubescent girl, Yasmeene Ball as a pre-teen, and Samantha Isler as a teenager.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Heinous?[]
- She repeatedly destroyed God's creations at the dawn of time, resulting in him locking her away in the Mark of Cain.
- Upon being released, she begins spreading a virus across the world that turns people into Rabids, bloodthirsty monsters that attack one another.
- She consumes the souls of humans she comes across, leaving them often devoid of proper human emotions and causing them to act unhinged and psychotic.
- After being taken in by King of Hell Crowley, she starts devouring the souls of the demons that work for him in order to grow in power.
- In an effort to draw God out of hiding, she begins murdering hundreds of people in various religious places of worship.
- Lucifer attacks her using a Hand of God but ultimately fails to harm her, and she proceeds to capture and torture him, believing that the pain of his favorite son may finally draw God out of hiding.
- She begins releasing a deadly fog onto towns which will continue to spread her Rabid virus.
- Sam, Dean, and Metatron manage to save Lucifer from her, with Sam and Dean taking Lucifer to safety while Metatron stays behind and attempts to cast a banishing spell on her which proves no effect. He asks her to spare the world, but she refuses and obliterates him.
- In order to find God's true location, she consumes the soul of the Heavenly Prophet Donatello, thus giving her his memories.
- After finally tracking him down, she attempts to kill and mortally wounds God, something that would cause the end of all existence, since both God and Amara must exist in order for balance in the universe to be maintained.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- She is a tragic character, as she did truly love her brother God and wanted to stay fused with him as one being, and felt betrayed when he locked her away. Being locked away for eons was described as horribly lonely by her, to the point that she admits she would rather be killed than ever go back. This desire is what allows God to manipulate her into fusing with him once again in season 15 so that she will no longer stand in his way.
- Prior to her redemption she truly does care for Dean due to his time as the bearer of the Mark of Cain, refusing to hurt him directly to the point that even when he approaches her with a bomb of souls strong enough to kill her, she doesn't attend to harm him in any way.
- She initially has moral agency issues due to a warped sense of what is right and wrong. Existing before the sense of morality and never even encountering Death, she is unfamiliar with many human concepts such as empathy and forgiveness. Her time on Earth causes her to realize that there is a purpose to be found in what God has created and after developing human emotions she ends her vendetta against God.
- After mortally wounding God and feeling that existence will soon end, Dean manages to convince her that her quest for revenge isn't worth it, and combined with her developing human emotions, she ends up redeeming herself by healing God and departing with him to explore the universe together. She returns in season 15 when God is revealed to by villainous all along, and attempts to convince him to give up on his revenge quest against Sam and Dean. While she is ultimately absorbed by God after being manipulated, God's power alongside her essence are eventually absorbed by Jack Kline, but as Jack says, Amara is still a part of him, and choosing to stay in a peaceful harmony rather than be a physical being of destruction once again.
