The Collector is the secondary antagonist of the Disney Channel animated series The Owl House.
He is the child of god-like cosmic beings who got falsely imprisoned in the In-Between Realm by the Boiling Isles Titan after his siblings, the Archivists, killed all the Titans. Millions of years later, he came up in league with Emperor Belos by helping him in his genocidal plans for freedom. But after Belos betrayed him, the Collector would be freed by King Clawthorne, the Titan's son, before reshaping the Isles to play new games.
He was voiced by Fryda Wolff.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- He was the main reason why Emperor Belos nearly succeeded in his goals, helping him become the most powerful magic user and giving him the Draining Spell, which was supposed to slowly and painfully drain the magic of everyone with Coven sigils.
- Even though he didn't know that death is permanent, he still knew the basics of the concept and that Belos planned a genocide through painful and agonizing means, but remained apathetic and even mimicked witches succumbing to the spell in a very darkly comedic way.
- He expressed sadistic glee over Belos killing his Golden Guards and even tried to have him admit he enjoys doing it.
- Though he saved Luz and her friends from Belos and stopped the Draining Spell, saving many lives as result, this was pragmatic so he could get revenge on Belos and play the Owl House game.
- He forcibly dragged King to play the Owl House game with him, leading King get himself captured to send Luz and her friends back to the Human Realm.
- He turned the majority of the residents of the Boiling Isles into puppets to play the Owl House game, which was based on King's adventures with Luz and Eda, which is shown to be a fate worse than death, since Hooty mentioned that he was "sequestered at a darkness like unto death", Amity tried to draw a glyph, and Camila cried after Luz's death, meaning everyone in their minds were aware of their fates but couldn't do anything.
- The survivors were also forced to live in post-apocalyptic conditions, with New Hexside being a good example, which also led Boscha to be broken and depressed after losing her two friends, causing Kikimora to take advantage of her loss by manipulating her into becoming a leader of New Hexside to form a new empire and rule over Boiling Isles under her rule.
- He forced anyone he didn't turn into a puppet to do his bidding, like having Odalia Blight be his maid and forcing Terra Snapdragon to play the Owl House game with him and King, even if they both deserved this.
- He turned Terra into a puppet after she criticized his game and insulted King, even if she deserved it.
- After Belos, who was possessing puppetized Raine, exposed King's plan to defeat him, the Collector turned both groups of heroes into puppets with the exception of Luz, Eda, and King, whom he trapped in nightmare simulations based on their worst fears to make them "see the error of their ways", with being Luz tormented by nightmares of her friends accusing her of dooming everyone on the Isles, Eda being tormented by the memories of accidentally scaring her father, and King being tormented by the memories of almost being sacrificed by the Titan Trappers to the Grand Huntsman.
- He put Luz, Eda and King through a series of dangerous games to befriend them, with them being barely able to pass them all.
- While The Collector saw everything as just them playing games, the trio almost died in each of them, with only their own wit and abilities saving them.
- Despite his kind being full of genocidal maniacs, he still stands out for his help in Belos' plans and for trapping many in a fate worse than death.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He's very tragic, as he is a child that was manipulated by his older siblings into befriending the Titans only to watch helplessly as they all got massacred by his siblings because of their power, before being falsely imprisoned for millennia by the Boiling Isles Titan when he thought he was the culprit.
- This also means he suffers from deep insecurities, as all he wants is to have friends who wouldn’t manipulate him like the Archivists, which is played for sympathy.
- He has moral agency issues due to his childlike view of the world, thinking death isn't permanent and he can just resurrect anyone who dies.
- He is a villain by proxy, since his worst actions were done because of his poor understanding of mortal life and desire for friends rather than malice.
- He is honorable, as he hates lying, always keeps his words, turned Lilith back to normal after seeing how much King misses her, and offered Luz and her friends a head-start before playing tag.
- He is genuinely affable and nice nearly to everyone despite putting people in danger, as when Belos suggested to simply wipe the heroes out, the Collector protested against such an idea and said he wants to befriend them.
- While he felt jealous of Luz and was slightly angry at her return to the Boiling Isles to supposedly stop him and take King away, he still didn’t want to hurt her and wanted to try being friends with her too.
- Under Belos’ advice, he took Luz, Eda and King away to play his favorite games, almost crushing and eating them at one point, but despite endangering their lives, The Collector never intended to actually hurt them, he was simply unaware of the fragility of mortal life.
- Even though the trio almost lost their lives during the games, it was all in the name of fun and to motivate them be friends with him and not out of actual desire to hurt them, choosing to sulk in a corner instead of retaliating when they beat and humiliate him in each of the games.
- He cares about both the Titans and King, as he loved playing with the former and considered the latter to be his best friend, even being sad when he thought he was a false friend.
- He has some standards, as he was disgusted with his species' actions, most notably their Titan genocide.
- Even though he also contributed to a genocide, it's worth noting the Collector didn't understand his actions would be permanent nor their gravity, but was fully aware of what other Collectors did with the Titans.
- He has plenty of comedic moments that detract from his villainy, such as being unable to rhyme "unity" with anything and forcing Odalia to feed Pizza Bagels to Eda, which is in contrast with Emperor Belos being played more seriously.
- Even his games and childish nature make him more mischievous than actually evil.
- After Luz sacrificed her life for him and he realized what death meant upon being unable to revive her, he felt a lot of remorse over all the chaos he caused and redeemed himself by offering kindness and forgiveness to Belos in an attempt to redeem him and saving everyone in the Archives before restoring everyone he transformed back to normal.
Trivia[]
- He is a rare example for a character to be considered both Pure Good and Inconsistently Heinous, due to being a child-like deity who was unaware of the effects his heinous acts had on others, since he quite literally didn't understand the concept of death.
- He, alongside Oliver Grayson, Philomela Sargant and Mika Misono, are the only Inconsistently Heinous characters to be Pure Good.
