~ The Emperor, Jack's father, about the Black Mass. |
The Black Mass, also known as the Ultimate Evil, is the overarching antagonist of the Cartoon Network animated series Samurai Jack, serving as the titular protagonist villain of the Season 3 episode "The Birth of Evil: Part 1".
It's a living and non-sapient amoebic mass that was created upon the Big Bang before landing on the Earth, where it expanded its influence until being targeted by the Emperor of Feudal Japan, though its defeat led to Aku's accidental creation.
Its Evil Ranking[]
What Makes It Heinous?[]
- It attacked Odin, Ra and Rama, three of the gods of creation, the moment they come after it in the vast space.
- While the deities did attack it first, the Black Mask's attempt to possess Rama against his will proves that they effectively detected it to be a danger in need to be eradicated.
- It let a fragment of it survive by detaching itself from it during its battle and finding its way into the Milky Way galaxy.
- It landed on the Earth sixty-five million years before the show's events via the explosion that essentially triggered the Cretaceous-Paleogene extinction period, killing all dinosaurs in the long run.
- It sucked a surviving Triceratops into its depths as it posed as a petroleum-like pit, resisting its attempts to escape by slowly drowning it. The presence of five dinosaurs' carcasses also prove that it consumed other surviving dinosaurs before the Triceratops.
- It stablished black forests of evil of its own through summoning tall, leafless and spiked tress or consuming the lands in a way that the ground is left with cracks.
- It catches a prehistoric man's leg inside its pit during the Ice Age to drown him, refusing to let his friend save him.
- This prompted his victim's friend to call four more of his fellow early men to help him in rescuing his friend, with their subsequent screams heavily implying that it killed them all.
- It invaded Japan by passing through under fertile ground, withering some flowers on its way.
- It killed Shinishi, a chicken from a young Chinese farmer, by claiming it into its depths, leaving nothing but the chicken's rope for the horrified farmer to find.
- It expanded its evil influence over Feudal Japan, wrecking at least a town by passing through its bridges and houses with its pointy spikes.
- It constantly tried to impale the Emperor and his forces as they march over its domains, eventually claiming the lives of all of the Emperor's samurai and their horses, leaving only the monarch and his mount.
- It cornered the Emperor and his horse to finish them off, disturbing the mount before the Emperor shoots the arrow into it.
- It created Aku, making it responsible for all the deaths, destruction and chaos Aku would later bring.
- It essentially developed the show's Heinous Standards by forming Aku from itself, leading Aku to establish them.
- Despite being a literal mass of darkness, nothing indicates it to be made of evil and it shows some cohesive pursuit in its evil goals.
What Makes It Inconsistent?[]
- Unlike Aku, it's a Generic Doomsday Villain due to a notable lack of characterization, with zero signs of a personality other than just destroying everything it finds, preventing it from being PE or NPE.
