What will they say about Sakamoto Ryoma? Will he be the man who rewrote history at the edge of a sword? Or, rather will he be the man who walked the same path as Yoshida Toyo? This past year holds the answer, and it's time for the two of us to determine what that is. One thing is for certain. Sakamoto Ryoma will be etched in time as the man who changed everything.
~ Takechi to Ryoma, before their final duel

Takechi Hanpeita is the main antagonist and final boss of Like a Dragon: Ishin!, a spin-off video game of the Like a Dragon franchise set in the Bakumatsu era of Japan.

He is the adoptive brother of Sakamoto Ryoma, and the leader of the Tosa Loyalist Party. Along his adoptive father, Yoshida Toyo, and his adoptive brother Ryoma, he seeks to free Tosa from the oppressive classist system and modernize the country. After witnessing his father's assassination, Takechi remains at Tosa, where he seemingly allies with the elders of Tosa, and plans to extend his revolutionary belief to the entire Japan

In the original version he was portrayed by Katsunori Takahashi, while in the remake, he was portrayed by Hideo Nakano

His Evil Ranking[]

What makes him heinous?[]

  • It's revealed that he was behind his father's assassination, and hired the mysterious man, later revealed to be Serizawa Kamo, to kill him, because according to him, he was too weak-willed to be a revolutionary, and becuase Toyo didn't share his more ruthless and bloodspilling philosophy. He's also directly responsible of the deaths of several loyalists who were killed by Serizawa, during his escape
  • After faking his death, he took Ryoma's name and conspired with Bakufu Navy Admiral, Rintaro Katsu, to overthrow the Bakufu, by supplying the Satsuma Domain, loyal to the Emperor, with occidental weapons
  • Killed his accomplices,Serizawa and Shinsengumi Inspector Susumu Yamazaki, because they knew too much.
  • After Ryoma convince the Shogun to abdicate, he orders to Ito, Shinsengumi Advisor, to light Kyo ablaze, leading to a mass destruction and endangering several civilans, some of which perished in the fire. At the same time he orders to Izo, his Loyalist subordinate to kill Kondo Isami, Shinsengumi Chief, and frame him for the fire, and subsequently to kill the Emperor, in order to have a pretense to start a civil war between the Satcho Alliance and the Bakufu
  • It's implied he was behind, or at least heavily involved, in the bulldozing of several houses and shops in Tosa, and built a fortress in their place

What makes him inconsistent?[]

  • Regardless of how ruthless he is, Takechi is still a well-intentioned extremist, who wants to reform the country and abolish the classist system, in order to instaurate a more modern and democratic state and resist to the occidental powers
  • He's Affably Evil, and doesn't show any trace of sadism or resentment towards Ryoma, explaining politely his philosophy and the motives behind his crimes.
  • He has a tragic backstory, as he saved Ryoma from being burned alive in his house lighten up by the Joshi and caused a massive scar in his back, who brought him a lot of suffering, as implied by Ryoma's internal guilt. He's also portrayed with sympathy during the story ,as the stress of his actions caused him to age prematurely from the stress, to the point Ryoma barely holds his tears, becuase he can't recognize his brother anymore.
  • Despite his actions, it's clear that he still cared for Ryoma, as he asked to Katsura Kogoro to look out for him. He also protects Ryoma in the finale, from being killed by Yodo, shielding him from his bullet
  • After being defeated and spared by Ryoma, he vows to repair the damages he's caused, redeeming himself, and takes Yodo's identity to contribute to Japan's reformation process
