Defenders. They have failed one hundred-thousand worlds. They always fail. I've come to enlighten you to the great darkness. I will bathe in your fear.
~ Steppenwolf arriving in Themyscira.
The Mother Boxes will be found and united. No protectors here. No Lanterns, no Kryptonian. This world will fall, like all the others... For Darkseid.
~ Steppenwolf's declaration of completing his mission.

Steppenwolf is the main antagonist of the 2021 superhero film Zack Snyder's Justice League, the director's cut of the 2017 superhero film Justice League. He is the Apokoliptian military commander who was exiled from Apokolips due to his betrayal to his nephew and master Darkseid, the ruler of Apokolips.

In the hopes of redeeming himself to his master, Steppenwolf seeks out to destroy and conquer one hundred-thousand worlds, currently having to owe fifty-thousand more as a means to be accepted back into his family. Having learned of the locations of the Mother Boxes from Lex Luthor, he seeks out to find the three boxes and combine them to form the Unity, a source of powerful energy that would bring Earth to its fall.

He was portrayed by Ciarán Hinds, who also played the theatrical version of the character, Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones, Mephisto in Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, Henry Burke in Race to Witch Mountain, Botticelli Remorso in The Tale of Despereaux, Jonathan Reiss in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider – The Cradle of Life, and Bill Maplewood in Life During Wartime. In the Japanese dub, he was voiced by Haruhiko Jō.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • Plotted with a group of Apokoliptians to betray and overthrow Darkseid, only for him to have a last minute change of heart, slaughtering his fellow conspirators all in a bid to reaffirm his loyalty.
  • Under the orders of Darkseid to undertake a crusade of penance, he conquered 100,000 worlds, enslaving and killing their inhabitants. Some of the survivors of his attacks were transformed by him into monstruous Parademons to serve him.
  • Slaughtered the Amazons that were protecting the Mother Box in Themyscira, stealing the box afterwards.
  • Tortured and killed several Atlanteans in order to obtain the Mother Box in their possession.
  • Kidnapped and tortured several employees from S.T.A.R. Labs to make them reveal the location of the Mother Box that was formerly in their possession.
  • When he was inside S.T.A.R. Labs and Silas Stone took the Mother Box and he locked with it, Steppenwolf was willing to kill him and that would lead Silas to sacrifice himself.
  • Successfully synchronized the Unity, vaporizing Earth before Flash ends up reversing it.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He only wants to conquer Earth in order to pay his debt for betraying his nephew and be allowed to return to his home, making him somewhat sympathetic.
    • To add to his sympathy, When Darkseid told him that he will forgive and allow him to come back to Apokolips, Steppenwolf was shedding tears.
  • He still respected Darkseid. While he betrayed him, he regretted said decision. It’s stated Steppenwolf previously killed those who wanted to seize the throne. While he was on earth talking to Darkseid and DeSaad, Steppenwolf kneeled before them. There is no indication it was hypocrisy.

Trivia[]

  • The irony behind his theatrical version counterpart being Pure Evil is the fact that he's from a story that is meant for PG-13 audience with the Snyder one being listed as mature. The reason why this is ironic is the fact that Pure Evils by nature aren't restricted to being apart of such adult content, but due to the Snyder Cut showing more than what was shown in the theatrical version, this became one of the special cases where the non PE version is less childish and friendly to watch than the PE one.
