Good morning, USA! I got a feeling that it's gonna be a wonderful day! The sun in the skill has a smile on his face and he's shining the salute to the American race. Oh boy! It's swell to say! Good morning, USA!
~ Stan Smith, during the intro for American Dad

Stanford "Stan" Leonard Smith is the main protagonist of the animated adult TV sitcom show, American Dad!. As husband of Francine Smith, he is the father of Steve and Hayley. Despite being considered to be the protagonist at times, he is frequently known for having a dark side throughout the whole series, as proven when he committed many villainous deeds. Because of this, he can be viewed as a villainous protagonist in most episodes.

He is voiced by the series creator, Seth MacFarlene, who also voices Roger Smith in the same series, as well as Peter Griffin, Glenn Quagmire, Carter Pewterschmidt (alongside his Emperor counterpart), Darth Stewie and Adolf Hitler in Family Guy.

His Evil Rankings[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He has a habit of abusing, insulting, and being rude to anyone around him and his family, especially his own wife Francine.
    • In "Shallow Vows", he blinded himself after admitting he only married Francine for her looks rather than her personality. He also freely admitted in his renewal vows that when Francine started to sag, he would subject her to experimental surgeries.
    • In "Great Space Roaster", he refuses to help Francine and Hayley, who were at the mercy of a vengeful Roger by retreating to the escape pod, only to be captured and attacked by Roger.
    • Another case is in "Hot Tub" when he preferred to relax in a hot tub, rather than helping his family, further showing that he can be a neglectful father for the most part.
    • In "Stan Knows Best" he shaved off Hayley's green hair, due to his hatred of her green hair and went as far to forbid her from hanging out with her boyfriend, Jeff. He also kidnapped her from a party she attended with Jeff, leading Jeff to briefly believe she might have been killed.
  • He displays a habit of oppressing, assaulting, and/or attempting to murder anyone if they get in his way and gets away with his crimes in several occasions.
    • He killed one of his former CIA pokers, Bad Larry when he was trying to shoot the pedophile, Randy. He did feel remorseful for this at first but moved past it quickly.
    • In "The People vs. Martin Sugar", he clubbed an officer with a rock and stole the dog in order to pursue Roger, only to get arrested by the same officer he assaulted.
    • He assaulted a Meter Maid in "Meter Made", causing him to work as a meter maid.
    • He assaulted Klaus and tried to save his life by putting him in a new fish body, leaving his human body fatally injured.
      • Even though Klaus may have inappropriately acted perverted to Francine, Stan or the rest of his family members constantly ignored his advice or abused him.
    • In "The Boring Identity", while successfully capturing Osama Bin Laden, Stan and other deputy officials murdered the staff of Doug and Busters. Stan even went as far to kill a member of staff quite brutally, blinding him and damaging his heart before shooting him.
    • To avoid being fired by the CIA, he murdered cloned teenage girls.
  • In the first episode of the series, when teaching Steve on how to impress a girl, Stan pretended to be a thief by stealing a customer’s purse and escape the mall, not before pushing away many customers in the mall.
  • He is incredibly rude towards Dick, like with several of his other CIA officials.
  • In "The Best Christmas Story Never", he changed the time that caused America to fall under communism. This all started when he decided to shoot Jane Fonda before changing his mind to kill Donald Sutherland, resulting in the alternate timeline when Ronald Reagan lost the 1984 election to Walter Mondale, who gave up America to the U.S.S.R.
  • In "Bazooka Steve", he decided to let Francine rat out Steve to the Bazooka Sharks, which made him a pariah to the public's eye.
    • After being threatened by the public, he tries to kill Steve with a bolas and forces him to escape to an unknown island.
  • He is shown to be an adulterer, as proven when he secretly expresses his love for Scarlett, while still married to Francine, as well as dating a girl through a high school reunion and wanting to have sex with another woman in order to cheat on Francine.
  • He can come across as a deviant in several instances.
    • He developed an unhealthy love obsession for his mother when he was young.
    • He molested a Catholic priest when he was young. He initially led Francine to believe he had been molested before revealing he was the molester, saying he didn't know why he did it but he wanted to.
    • He happens to rape a horse, according to Roger, in “Don't Look a Smith Horse in the Mouth”.
  • In "Stan Smith as Keanu Reeves as Stanny Utah in Point Breakers", he disguised himself as a surfer in order to rob a bank to save money for his quests.
  • He is shown to be xenophobic for the most part of the entire series.
    • Adding insult to injury is that his neighbors, Greg Corbin and Terry Bates, were a gay couple, yet he has caused enough trouble for them several times such as being against same couple raising children.
  • In "Homeland Insecurity" he racially profiled his Iranian neighbors, Bob and Linda Memari, as terrorists whom he thought were causing trouble.
    • During a party, he did security checks on them and after scaring away the whole neighborhood, he installed security cameras in the Memari house in order to stalk them without their consent.
    • Later in the same episode, he imprisoned the whole neighborhood in his own backyard as a prison camp, including Bob and Linda Memari, and didn’t feel remorseful about his crimes.
  • In "American Dream Factory" he ran a sweatshop with illegal immigrants he hired to work in harsh conditions at his home.
  • As revealed in "The Vacation Goo", he happens to be keeping Francine, Steve, and Hayley in vacation goos and hooking them up to CIA machines in order to fake the vacation.
  • In Rubberneckers", he attempted to cover his car accident from Francine, only to be arrested and sentenced to six years in jail for insurance fraud.
    • This all started when he stalked a jogger by taking pictures of her without her consent, only to crash the car from another driver.
  • He ruined his family in order to exact vengeance on a car salesman for a petty reason by putting them in poverty. This also led Hayley to having to act as a prostitute to get money for the family, something that clearly traumatized her and yet Stan didn't care.
  • In "Morning Mimosa", he carted himself naked in the supermarket, which resulted in his own arrest. Furthermore, when he was being arrested, he assaulted the two police officers before attempting to escape.
    • This all started when he blatantly snaps his fingers to pretend that everyone disappeared.
    • Not to mention, he crashed through the car that rammed into the water hydrant and poorly parked his car that damaged the biker’s motorcycle.
  • In "I Can't Stan You", he evicted his neighborhood because they hated and made fun of him. He later evicted Francine, Hayley, and Klaus in the same episode. He also tried to drink Klaus and his bowl.
  • In "Surro-Gate", he stole Greg and Terry's baby to give the baby a better place to live and later stole two children of the lesbian couple, due to him being a homophobic, not counting "Lincoln Lovers".
  • In order to win the church position as a deacon and to take advantage of Roger's reproductive cycle, he put Roger in a milking machine and over feeding him.
  • He is shown to be rather misogynistic towards females, as shown when he sang a song when he wished he can go back to a time when women have no rights in "Stan of Arabia", which came true when he and his family moved to Arabia and when Avery Bullock asked him to get his job back, Stan refuses.
    • Not to mention, he also snapped Jay Leno's neck, which causes him to die.
  • As shown in "Father's Daze", he can be a sociopath, as demonstrated when he used a erased his family's memories of spending Father's Day in order to have Father's Day every day, as he thought their attempts to make another celebration for him wouldn't be enough. When the family discovered this thanks to Klaus, Stan openly berates them for their inability to give him a perfect Father's Day went on a tirade towards them that caused them to be shocked and disgusted towards him.
  • In "White Rice", he is revealed to have Francine hypnotized by a hypnotist, whom he thought was a therapist. Stan did this to forget about her problems and feelings she had that he can't possibly deal with
    • Also in the flashback of the same episode, it is revealed that he and Francine used to have a son named Bailey, who died as Stan refuses to let him get a vaccine shot.
  • Even though his ego made him claim that he can be smart to overcome and solve issues, his stupidity just makes situations much worse.
    • One notable example is when his reckless actions made his family trapped during a hurricane by refusing to let them evacuate the house, despite Buckle's important offer to get the whole family out of the house.
    • Not to mention, when Stan tried to stop the house from flooding by using anchor out of Roger’s wine box collection, it also causes the house to overturn and Roger’s date to be fatally impaled by an antler chandelier.
    • He also brought a bear and shark to attack the family and harpooned Francine when he was aiming at the bear.
    • When he engaged in a brief standoff between Peter Griffin and Cleveland Brown from Family Guy, he shot Francine in the arm.
  • In "Dope and Faith", he attempted to ruin the life of his former atheist friend, Brett, by destroying his house, in order to force him to believe in God. This resulted in Brett trying to kill himself in order to go to hell.
    • After ordering the C.I.A. officials to use an experimental ray to make Brett's wife a lesbian, Stan attempted to convert her sexuality and resulted in her and her children leaving Brett
    • To make matters worse, he sabotaged Brett's breakfast by contaminating his food with an avian virus. Consequently, the virus resulted in many people becoming seriously ill.
  • In "Bully for Steve", Stan disguises himself as a bully and abuses Steve as a hard way to teach him how to be brave and stand up against bullies.
  • He has an unhealthy hatred of Jeff, since Season 1-10 and never learned his lesson from "For Whom the Sleigh Bells Toll" where he tends to insult him for no reason, even after being saved by the latter.
  • He is often a hypocrite, such as the episode "A Smith In The Hand", where he blames Steve for the wood burner incident by falsely claiming that masturbation is a sin, yet he became addicted to masturbation after the wood burner incident. Unfortunately for him, he gets caught by Steve, but still blames it on the television and tried to take over the TV network in order to air his radical views regarding sex classes.
  • He is known for causing chaos on most occasions because of his paranoia and incompetence and often gets away with his crimes, most notably in "Best Little Horror House in Langley Falls", where he bought five serial killers that did more to hunt down people, after getting jealous at Buckle for having the best Halloween decoration in his house for a petty reason.
  • In "A Jones For A Smith", he ignores Hayley's help from her previous choking on a cereal by continuing to read his newspaper.
    • He also became addicted to crack that consequently ruined Steve's relationship with Jeanine when he decided to prostitute himself to her father for money regarding drugs, as well as going against social programs.
    • He also got caught in the act of robbing Greg and Terry's house and threatening the aforementioned two.
  • After a hospitalized Hayley has to have a kidney treatment and when he learned that Francine slept with a man named Joel before their marriage, Stan incited Roger to rob Joel's apartment and steal the kidney from him.
  • In "One Little Word" he refuses to take Bullock to the hospital and decided to let him die after being shot in one of his legs by his wife Miriam after she found out that he had an affair with a woman named Coco.
  • Even though Bullock was the perpetrator for the murder of Francine's friend, Stan falsely accused Francine of killing her friend and didn't want to hear her say that she told him so.
  • One of his most infamous roles and Moral Event Horizon crosses is in "American Fung", where he constantly forgets his wedding anniversary with Francine.
    • He locked her up in a psychiatric hospital, so he can spare time to get a gift for his forgotten anniversary with Francine.
    • When he tried to offer her a bucket of chicken, this only did more to make her insane and remaining in the hospital until she gets cured. His heinous action is the sole reason why she went insane.
    • Aside from getting a lobotomy operation with Francine, he did not face any proper punishment for locking up and making Francine an insane woman, making him a Karma Houdini in this episode.
  • Another one of his most MEH crossings is that he abused his position by ordering the CIA to create a natural disaster that consequently cause the tornado to destroy the whole town and caused the flying crocodiles to kill the lives of many people, in order to get Greg Corbin and Memphis Stormfront to become gay couples, which he showed no remorse for his crime.
  • He assaulted Roger over Fussy, the dog who was spending time with Roger in "Not So Desperate Housewives".
    • He also tossed Roger through a wall and into Hayley's room.
  • In "Phantom Telethon", he plagiarizes Roger's ideas of raising CIA funds and make false statements about it to his family. This caused Roger to ruin the aired telethon.
  • In “Permanent Record Wrecker”, after trying to find a job outside of the C.I.A., he ruined Steve’s job as assistant manager at a grocery store by not knowing how to stack up the butter in a grocery store that caused one of the customer’s child to slip over a butter, killing the child in the process. This consequently resulted Steve in losing his job at a grocery store.
  • In “The Mural of the Story”, although he vows to restore a worn out mural, he ruined the mural by blowing up the funds of the mural's restoration for the party and pretend that it was crafted by a preschool student.
    • In addition to pinning the defaced mural on Hayley, he refuses to listen to Haley telling the truth by chloroforming and mutilating her face in order for her not to be despised. Consequently, this resulted in her vengeance against Stan.
  • Despite promising Francine that he wouldn't buy guns, Stan destroyed his promise by giving Steve a gun as his Christmas present. This resulted in Steve accidentally shooting Santa and caused a friction that put the entire family in jeopardy.
  • In "Next of Pin", he assaulted an innocent bystander for not supporting Steve during the game. Consequently, this resulted in Stan being banned from the bowling alley.
    • He later violated the ban by sneaking into the bowling ally during the bowling championship of Steve, whom he got stabbed in the ankle with a switchblade by Stan. This incident ruined Steve's bowling career.
  • As revealed in "Oedipal Panties", he happens to be the perpetrator in kidnapping the boyfriends of his mother and dumping them into an uncharted island, due to his unhealthy lustful romance of his mother when he was young.
  • In "Moon Over Isla Island", after killing the island dictator by mistake, Stan refuses to confess his crime to the island’s citizens and do anything to lead them towards democracy by having Roger to disguise himself as the island dictator, so he would not confess his crime.
  • In "A Starboy Is Born", he committed countless crimes in order to teach Roger a lesson when it comes to following the rules.
    • He even captured The Weeknd, a musician that Roger adored.
    • After Roger's arrest and imprisonment, Stan refuses to accept Roger's apology for his earlier behavior and only wanted to send him free from jail with his demented meaning of "Tough Love".
    • When Roger and Klaus are stranded on a volcanic island, Stan decided to save them by poisoning Francine with the bubonic plague and lost the cure before giving it to her.
    • He refused to take Francine to the hospital, claiming he can save her himself.
  • Stan and Jeff went to a cannabis factor only for the former to illegally invade it to steal the "ever-lasting edible" that is under the rhetoric of "doing whatever it takes to fight the War on Drugs" for Avery Bullock's desires to have something edible.
    • Later in the same episode, Stan and his agents disregarded the fact of cannabis being illegal before entering the factory to steal a "golden blunt rap".
    • Stan disregarded the cannabis' legalization by proclaiming that it "raises crime and brings the economy down, which proved himself wrong as it provided more revenue and made a mockery of Jeff for being a cannabis user, in addition to abolishing cannabis from an illegal drug trade.
  • While he is frequently called out for his crimes, he is rarely punished, making him a Karma Houdini.
  • While Memphis Stormfront and B'Thazalon the Nameless One have done much worse, Stan has much lower resources than them, as he stands out for having more than enough unique crimes.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • As was the case with all the other characters in this show, his crimes are just used for dark comedy purposes only and can't be taken seriously by the show's narrative.
  • Although he is mostly unintelligent for the most part, there are still some occasions where he can be clever to realize the heinous deeds done by him or from someone else. He has also been shown to have expressed regret for his villainous deeds on several occasions and tries his best to fix his mistakes from time to time.
  • Like with a lot of the characters in this show, he is highly On & Off, as he occasionally performs some heroic actions such as protecting his family and his nation from dangerous threats.
    • Despite his corruption and reckless actions showcased in the later series, he still acted heroically on several occasions and makes his attempt to be a loving patriarch to his family and a close acquaintance to those around him at times.
  • He does care for his family and those around him at times, including Francine and Hayley.
  • While it doesn't excuse any of his abusive or criminal acts, he has a tragic past of being abused and neglected by his father before the latter eventually abandoned him and his mom in addition to being a severely bullied outcast as a child until college. All of this resulted in Stan growing up without living a proper childhood.
    • On top of that, his mother flat out admitted to him that he was partially at fault for his dad leaving right after it happened.
    • However, many of his actions are motivated by selfishness, sadism, and xenophobia, making his tragedy minor.
