| ~ Sigma after being defeated by X in Mega Man X5. |
Sigma is the main antagonist of the Mega Man X series, and the arch-nemesis of X and Zero.
He was once the noble and benevolent commander of the Maverick Hunters, but he turned on them after he was infected with the Maverick Virus from Zero after their fight. Striving to destroy all of humanity, he became the most dangerous Maverick and the main enemy of humanity, with X, Zero, and Axl opposing him every time.
In Japanese, he has been voiced by Mugihito in all voiced appearances. In English, he was voiced by Garry Chalk in the Mega Man cartoon, Charlie Fontana in Mega Man X4, Walter Roberts in Mega Man X7, and Dave Pettitt in Mega Man X8.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- While Sigma was originally a benevolent commander of the Maverick Hunter’s, his fateful encounter with Zero would cause him to be infected by the Maverick Virus. This would cause Sigma to go Maverick, turning him against his fellow Hunters.
- He started a revolt in the first game, with many members of the Maverick Hunters joining him, resulting in many deaths and massive destruction, not even caring his pet robot Velguarder was destroyed by X.
- He created the X-Hunters to retrieve Zero's parts, planning to reprogram him to serve him, and to also kill X to continue his mission of destroying humanity.
- He convinced Techno to hack into the Mothee Computer to cause chaos, resulting in his and Middy deaths because of their CPU being destroyed when X destroyed his computer.
- He corrupted the benevolent scientist Dr. Doppler, using him to create another revolt in Doppler City, and also forcing him to make a new powerful body for him. After being defeated by X, he tried to possess him in his viral form.
- He seeded the Erasure Incident, where Reploids became hollow shells becquse of their Soul DNAs being removed from their corpses, though he admits Berkana went too far.
- Manipulated things behind the scene to make the Maverick Hunters and Repliforce fight against each other, convincing Magma Dragoon to betray Repliforce and frame them, leading the latter to destroy the power source of Sky Lagoon to cause it to fall and destroy the city below, resulting in the deaths of thousand of civilians. After General is defeated, he activates the Final Weapon to destroy Earth, with only General's sacrifice stopping the laser.
- Desiring to "awaken" Zero, he orders Dynamo to crash Eurasia into Earth, filling it with Maverick Virus. He purposefully loses to X and Zero to release the Sigma Virus on the entire planet, infecting many reploids. While Zero manages to destroy Eurasia, the wreckage leaves the planet badly damaged, forcing the humans to go underground. After X and Zero fight, he tries to kill X before being stopped by Zero, and he nearly kills the duo with his laser after his defeat, with Zero eventually killing him before dying.
- When he was resurrected by Gate, he "thanks" him by electrocuting him, possibly killing him.
- He corrupts all the members of Red Alert, turning the members against their leader Red when he attempted to seek help from the Maverick Hunters. He even attempted to possess Red (Axl in disguise) before being defeated again.
- It's revealed the new generation of Reploids has the DNA of Sigma, with him wanting to destroy the "old world" and make the moon into the "new world" for him and the new reploids, claiming they can be maverick at will and rather than being animalistic, they would act like him.
- Originally, Sigma started out as a Well Intentioned Extremist in the earlier Mega Man X games. He also appeared to have a certain degree of respect for X, and even standards as shown when he claimed Berkana went too far with her scheme. But as his sanity began to degrade further and further, he abandoned that objective and lost all redeeming traits. No longer caring for his fellow Reploids, only desiring to eliminate everyone in his way.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is too tragic to be NPE. He was originally a noble commander who fought to protect humanity and was a father to his men. In a Mega Man X4 flashback, Sigma states that he’ll handle Zero personally, since he didn’t want any more of his men being sacrificed. He had no idea that battle with Zero would lead to him becoming infected and going Maverick. Due to the Maverick Virus not having a cure and being destroyed several times, any humanity he had was lost overtime.
- As a result, Sigma also has moral agency issues to the point that he can be considered a Villain by Proxy since he was corrupted by the Maverick virus, turning him from a benevolent commander of the Maverick Hunters to the leader of the Mavericks with him wanting to destroy humanity and the Maverick Hunters.
Trivia[]
- His counterpart from Mega Man Maverick Hunter X is Pure Evil due to not being infected with the Maverick Virus, instead willingly turning against humanity after believing they were stopping the reploids from reaching their true potential.
- He was once considered Near Pure Evil but was later removed after being decided that he is too tragic and morally impaired.
