It's unfair. Anne is gone and so are her smiles... Then why is everyone else smiling? They are smiling even though they have taken her smiles--my only light--away from me! Why? Why? Why?
~ Sick Solitude's last words as a human before his transformation.
Mutenmaru-kun, you can't save anything. You can't save me, your friends, or the world! Give in to despair as you watch the world fall to ruin! Hahahahahaha!
~ Sick Valachlorophenol's last words as a monster before his death.

Sick Valachlorophenol (in Japanese: シック・ヴァラクロロフェノル, Shikku Varakurorofenoru) is the main antagonist of season 2 of the trading card game and webcomic Kaiten Mutenmaru by Kura Sushi.

He was Sick Solitude (in Japanese: シック・ソリチュード, Shikku Sorichūdo), but due to a tragedy, he turned into a spiteful monster who provides people with Abominable Crystals to corrupt them and sow chaos across the world. It is eventually revealed that his ultimate goal is to erase all smiles and destroy the world by creating a Devil. The Devil turns out to be Kid, a young man born from an Abominable Crystal, and Sick allows Kid to consume him as the final trigger for Kid's awakening.

His Evil Ranking[]

Debated Validations[]

  • An Abominable Crystal almost always overrides the user's sense of self, rendering them mindless, gradually changing them, or creating a new personality. Sick is an example of the third scenario along with Sissela. However, the moral agency of monsters isn't so clear-cut for reasons below:
    • Eryth and Ritol Morte, Astar Tame, and Trishna Nolamine seem to retain their consciousness from when they were humans. Island of Bonds shows that at least Ritol, Trishna, and Astar are also capable of caring about others even though they are monsters.
    • Okka Salmon wants her son, Greenbear, to flee as her monster form is about to strangle him in her mindscape before she stops herself upon hearing his words.
    • Sissela Siren cries both times she is unable to use the full power of her Song of Destruction against her former friends. The sight of them always troubles her heart but she subconsciously helps them on at least one occasion. When Sissela turns back to Umimi Shira, Tuna suggests that Umimi had been fighting off Sissela's destructive instincts.
    • Shinobu Kajika tries to resist his monster form's destructive instincts upon seeing a little boy. He breaks free soon afterwards when the little boy reminds him of his belief that a hero is strong and kind and protects everyone.
    • Orlando asks Mutenmaru to flee as his monster form awakens inside Mutenmaru's tent.
  • Sick saved Eryth and Ritol, who were young children living alone in poverty, from a group of adults cornering them when Eryth tried to get someone to cure Ritol of a severe illness. Although his motive is unclear, the fact remains that he transformed Eryth and Ritol into monsters per his modus operandi.
  • Sick defends Eryth and Ritol from the combined attacks of Mutenmaru and his friends during their battle in the sacred city. However, he later abandons them to fulfill his ultimate goal.

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

In General[]

  • Sick is responsible for the appearance of monsters across the world in the present day as he corrupts people and their hopes and dreams with Abominable Crystals, finding many of them when they are either in desperate situations or dissatisfied with their lives. Notable examples include Eryth and Ritol, Jagan Taurvi, Astar, Crocell Xylel, Okka, and Umimi.
  • Sick's jovial and polite demeanor belies his spite and sadism as he delights in causing despair through the monsters he creates as well as psychological warfare.
  • Sick despises all humanity for their neglect and abuse of him, to the point of seeking their misery and utter destruction, even though he was originally human and those who wronged him as a human are long gone. This makes him a hypocrite since he was unfairly targeted as a human by others for the wrongdoings of his parents, but he is willing to inflict the same suffering on the world.
  • Sick keeps going on even in his diminished state solely through the power of obsession.
  • Although Sick didn't choose to become a monster in the first place, his destructive actions and his insistence on remaining a monster and perpetuating the cycle of hatred through the Abominable Crystals to make others suffer, just as he did, are the reasons he does not achieve a happy ending in life. This is also why no one forgives him, remembers him, or mourns him after his death. Sick's ultimate fate is meant to contrast with Kid, a Devil who chooses love and breaks the cycle of the Abominable Crystals.

Background[]

  • After transforming into a monster, Sick terrorized a group of people in revenge for having made him suffer back when he was a human.
  • Sick attempted to kidnap Umimi in front of her father, King Ocean, to use her immense power for his ends when she was a baby ten years ago. The incident scarred King Ocean to the point where he locked her up for her life in an attempt to protect her from evil people like him. In other words, Sick is responsible for Umimi growing up into a lonely girl who yearns for freedom, her strained relationship with her father, and King Ocean's initial antagonism towards Mutenmaru and his friends.
  • Sick had Eryth and Ritol disguised as mermaids to serve as spies in King Ocean's court.
  • Sick introduced Crocell to Abominable Crystals, corrupting his desire to be a hero into megalomania even before he transforms into a monster.
  • Sick implanted an Abominable Crystal in Okka without her knowing when he saw her and her son, Greenbear, suffering at the hands of humans.
  • Sick turned Jagan from a bedridden boy who longingly watched other children play outside into a gigantic monster whose immense power causes destruction even though all he wants is to play.
  • Sick turned Tetsujin and Astar from comrades into enemies by offering an Abominable Crystal to Astar when he yearned for the strength to surpass Tetsujin.

Sea of the Beginning[]

  • Sick sent a young man to seek out Mutenmaru before an Abominable Crystal transformed him into a monster, which terrorizes Mutenmaru's home village and provokes Mutenmaru into pursuing Sick across the world.
  • Sick sends a gigantic seashell monster to help a transformed Orcus Phenyl Phenol fight Mutenmaru.
  • Sick has Eryth and Ritol disguised as reporters to promote Crocell's business.
  • Sick supports Crocell in creating monsters for the heroes in Megapolis to endlessly fight against before Mutenmaru defeats Crocell and brings him back to his senses.
  • Following Crocell's defeat, Sick abandons Crocell for outliving his usefulness and refutes Crocell's notion that they were friends and equal to each other. Sick steals Crocell's research for his ends, including the Master Megadis suit and the technology to extract Abominable Crystals from monsters.

Journey of Light[]

  • Sick transforms a dinosaur fossil into a monster to terrorize the museum.
  • Sick transforms Money Kineko into a monster as a warning to Mutenmaru about what he would do if the boy didn't pursue him.
  • Sick transforms Okka into a gigantic monster whose presence freezes villages and transforms animals and trees into monsters. When Mutenmaru and his friends confront him over this, Sick notes that the bond between a parent and a child can help create a particularly powerful monster, to the anger of Shinobu.
  • Sick encourages two young men to persecute Greenbear by saying that it is the cub's fault that their village is freezing.
  • Sick reminds Greenbear of all the suffering he and his mother have endured at the hands of humans in a failed attempt to corrupt him.

City of Radiance[]

  • Sick is behind a group of monsters that attack Mutenmaru and his friends on their way to Europia.
  • Sick sends Jagan to terrorize Europia and fight Mutenmaru and his friends.
  • Sick preys on a little girl named Mel Sue's feelings of being neglected to trap her inside a monster, telling her that her adoptive older sister doesn't love her. He later admits to creating the monster with a special Abominable Crystal that would spread wide when broken as he delights in the prospect of the shards creating more monsters before Kid consumes them.
  • Sick has Eryth and Ritol report Umimi's whereabouts to King Ocean, who locks her up away from her friends.
  • Sick taunts Umimi over her powerlessness to help her friends and break free of her situation when he visits her room. He offers her power and freedom through an Abominable Crystal, twisting her dream to be free like a bird as she transforms into the winged Sissela Siren, who destroys her kingdom in revenge and turns against all of her friends.

Earth and Sky[]

  • Sick unleashes the great serpent Gabunomu to terrorize Desert Land.
  • Sick kidnaps a little girl named Coco and holds her hostage against her grandfather, Holysan, to get his way once he reaches the Celestial Realm.
  • Sick attempts to contaminate the source of all water by implanting an Abominable Crystal into the sacred fountain of the Celestial Realm before Green Craft awakens and stops him.
  • Sick visits a weakened Holysan and demands the whereabouts of a book on how to make a Devil.
  • Sick rapidly infects Green Craft with an Abominable Crystal to the point where it ensures the divine beast's death.
  • Due to Sick's actions, Green Craft uses the last of his strength partly to seal the Celestial Realm away from the rest of the world.

Star of Hope[]

  • By providing data on Crocell's ultimate hero suit, Sick helps Azoth Die, the CEO of Diehand, produce a hero suit that transforms Shinobu into a mindless monster and causes destruction in Leon City even after Shinobu breaks free.
  • It's implied that Sick cuts off Azoth's legs for disappointing him and "ruining his friend candidate" as there is a shot of Azoth screaming and Azoth's cameo in the epilogue has him with metallic legs.
  • Sick plans to destroy the facility containing a machine designed to help Mutenmaru purify monsters across the world at once.
  • Sick has Trishna unleash a powerful scream of despair to demoralize everyone present.
  • Sick launches a massive attack against Mutenmaru for purifying monsters across the world before Sissela saves Mutenmaru using the Song of Destruction.
  • As Sissela is about to vanish due to excessive use of the Song of Destruction, Sick attempts to taunt Mutenmaru by saying that it's all his fault for bringing Umimi outside her home before he offers to use an Abominable Crystal to extend her life.
  • Sick offers an Abominable Crystal to Tear Crown, to her anger, before she enters Sissela's mind to save her.
  • It's revealed that Sick never truly granted Umimi freedom as her mindscape contains a gigantic statue in Sissela's likeness that is in tears with her wings down as she is chained by the neck and both hands.
  • Sick attempts to demoralize Umimi by reminding her of how much destruction she had caused as the monster Sissela.
  • Sick vows revenge against Mutenmaru and others for weakening him; breaking one of Jagan's horns; and getting Umimi back from him.

Wonderland[]

  • Sick creates monsters to terrorize Whitoy, including a gigantic one that attacks Princess Maka Nika, who is a child, and almost destroys the stuffed animal that her mother gifted her.
  • Sick implants a special Abominable Crystal in Jagan to have him spread its shards upon death, now that his days are numbered since one of his horns is broken. When Siam Merluza confronts him over it, Sick admits he is willing to sacrifice one or two of his allies to further his ends. Sick's plan for Jagan doesn't come to pass since Siam purifies Jagan, though.
  • Sick holds Maka and Mana hostage against Mutenmaru and his friends before Maka's mother attacks him in retaliation.
  • In the sacred city, Sick revives the evil King Rozeki with an Abominable Crystal to terrorize it and usurp its rightful ruler, Queen Jeen.

Ancient Land[]

  • Sick transforms Orlando into a gigantic coyote monster to ravage Shuiro Valley from within as Orlando seeks to consume everything in his way, including spirits, to gain their power. As a result, Orlando ends up eating all but one of the spirits in Shuiro Valley.
  • Sick launches a massive attack on Mutenmaru and his friends in a rage when Mutenmaru tells him that his actions would only make Anne sad.
  • Sick sends his associates to terrorize Mutenmaru's home village.

Island of Bonds[]

  • Sick creates tiny monsters to torment Mutenmaru and his friends before all the allies the boy had met purify the monsters.
  • Sick launches a massive attack on Mutenmaru in a rage when the latter mentions Anne's name again in an attempt to reach out to his human self.
  • Sick delights in Kid's despair over seemingly killing his adoptive father, Thia Venta Zoa, by accident. He allows the Devil growing out of Kid to consume him as the final trigger for Kid's awakening in hopes that it would erase all smiles and destroy the world.
  • Sick's last conscious act as a living being is to spitefully taunt Mutenmaru, saying that Mutenmaru can't save anything--Sick, Mutenmaru's friends, or the world--and can only watch the world fall to ruin.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Sick is a fundamentally tragic and sympathetic character. His worst traits, such as his lifelong obsession with Abominable Crystals, his omnicidal disregard for human life, and his intense hatred of happiness, are the direct result of enduring neglect and violent dehumanization as a human in a town infected by these Crystals. He was originally an innocent young boy named Sick Solitude, the aristocratic son of Pain Solitude and his wife, Yamai Solitude. His parents were once a happy couple, but they began to neglect him and oppress the townspeople. Pain and Yamai's rule caused the class divide to tear through their community, as Pain spent the town's money solely for the aristocracy while Yamai made it a hobby to physically abuse the townspeople with her hounds. Pain and the family servant both insisted that Sick remain ignorant of the world because he was young, while Yamai was rarely home as she went gallivanting. As a result, Sick grew up feeling lonely and yearned for freedom, like birds soaring in the sky. Sick was so kind that he tearfully wondered why everyone could not get along, but his community wished for him to die with his parents for their oppressive rule. Sick's only friend was a girl of common birth named Anne Blanc, who faced a similar dismissive treatment from the adults around her because she was young and hated violence. Together, Sick and Anne found themselves in hopeless situations, surrounded by neglectful and selfish adults. The class divide was so severe that Sick felt the need to pretend to be an abusive aristocrat when his family servant caught him with Anne, though he was apologetic about having to hide his relationship with her this way. Nevertheless, they did their best to be kind, endure their hardships, and find moments of happiness in life as they promised to be together forever. Sick was particularly determined; he vowed to study and train so he could protect Anne. Anne reciprocated his devotion, as she promised to cook for him and write letters to him every day out of gratitude to him for teaching her how to read and write. One night, the townspeople decided to burn down Sick's mansion and kill his family in revenge. They refused to listen to Anne all the same and one of them hit her as they accused her of collaborating with the aristocracy. Sick was forced to flee, guided by Anne, as his parents transformed into monsters and chased him. Despite everything, he still longed for parental love, tearfully calling his parents for help. He stumbled upon the sight of his mansion burning and a grieving man standing before a grave. The man revealed that Sick would have died if Anne hadn't sacrificed her life for him. Meanwhile, the rest of the community had killed Sick's parents and cheered over their victory, completely disregarding the fact that they had crushed a child from their own ranks. They treated Sick's life, as well as the lives of his family and Anne, as expendable, believing they would be free and happy thanks to the destruction of his family. In response to Sick's overwhelming negative emotions, black mist from the Abominable Crystals emerged from one of his parents' rings, along with the bodies of the mob, transforming him into a vengeful monster with no memories of who he had been before he lost everything. The Abomimable Crystals gave Sick a featherly and winged form as cruel mockery of his yearning for freedom as a human, just as he would later twist the wishes of his victims through these Crystals. Although Mutenmaru does not forgive Sick for his actions, he seeks to save Sick from the madness of being a monster after learning of Sick's tragic past.
  • Sick's human self expresses remorse in his dying moments, acknowledging that he knew his actions would make Anne sad, but he was unable to overcome his hatred.
  • After Mutenmaru helps Kid purify himself, Sick wakes up in the afterlife, where Anne greets him with a stack of letters she had written to him. Sick reveals his insecurities and hesitates to approach Anne, screaming as he fears she will see the monster he became. However, Anne gently reminds Sick that she promised to write to him every day and that they vowed to be together forever. Her words encourage Sick to let go of his hatred and revert to his human self. He apologizes for forgetting her and for being late to join her. Anne forgives Sick, and together, they walk away to return home.
