The Hamato Clan has gotten weak! It is rotting from the inside! The Foot was the oldest of all ninja clans, but it was wiped out by Hamato Yuuta when he slain its master, Oroku Keiji; my father! I was adopted by the Hamato Clan as an infant, raised by my enemy in ignorance! I will have my revenge on them all!
~ Oroku Saki after learning his true heritage, corrupting the Hamato Clan, and rising to power.

Hamoto Yoshi is finished. The earth can be destroyed for all I care. I have finally WON!
~ Shredder's famous quote after killing Splinter before he could save the world from destruction in the original timeline.

Oroku Saki, better known as the Shredder and later known as the Super Shredder, is the main antagonist of the 2012 Nickelodeon animated TV series Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

He is the deadly and ruthless leader of the Foot Clan, the adoptive father of Karai, and the arch-nemesis of Hamato Yoshi/Splinter, his eldest son Leonardo, and the entire Hamato Clan. He is also the master of Tiger Claw, Rahzar, Fishface, Bebop, Rocksteady and Baxter Stockman, as well as Yoshi's former best friend and adopted brother.

He was voiced by Kevin Michael Richardson, who also voiced Deus Ex Machina in The Matrix Revolutions and the Lumberjack Ghost in Gravity Falls.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

In General/Background[]

  • He is taken completely seriously with no comedic moments.
  • After discovering that he was a part of the Foot clan, and was the son of the Foot Clan's leader, he tried to kill Splinter (his adoptive brother) and even corrupted the members of the Hamato Clan to join him and the Foot Clan. The first fight Shredder had with Splinter resulted in the former having part of his face burned.
  • Accidentally killed Tang Shen, and although he was saddened by her death, he blamed Splinter for it and then, he raised Splinter and Shen's child, Miwa, into a cold-blooded warrior, telling her that Splinter murdered her mother.
  • While he suffered a legitimate tragedy of the Hamato Clan killing his father and destroying the Foot Clan and then raising him, making him feel like he was surrounded by lies when he discovered the truth, it doesn’t hold up because it’s never shown affecting him in the present and he takes it out on people like the Turtles who did nothing to him, not to mention he had no problem inflicting the same fate upon Karai. His “tragedy” of losing Tang Shen doesn’t hold up either since it was completely his fault, he refused to accept responsibility for it instead of blaming Splinter, and he eventually stopped caring about her altogether.
  • Threatens and occasionally does hurt his minions for failure, even threatening to kill them. He even threatens Karai despite the fact he raised her.
  • Despite the high heinous standard of the series, he passes it for frequently selling out the Earth to the Kraang and for killing Splinter before he could even save the world, as well as his personal villainy towards the heroes.

Series[]

  • Mutates Baxter Stockman into a housefly as punishment for his repeated failures and while he doesn’t kill him, it is only due to the usefulness to him.
  • Tells Tiger Claw he doesn't care about the human race when Tiger Claw expresses how the Kraang care nothing about the human race and will betray him, leading him on planning to betray them first.
  • Locks up Karai after she learns the truth about her past. He tells Karai that he did this because he thought it would've been wrong for her to be raised by somebody like Splinter, even calling him scum, claiming that what he did to her was what he knew was right.
  • When he captures the Turtles and Splinter and tries to kill Leo, he cuts the cage and gets Karai mutated. While saddened over Karai's mutation, he again blames Splinter for it happening despite him not even being present.
  • While he admits that the Kraang were dangerous allies, this is simply pragmatism as he had no problem with them trying to destroy humanity and would rather have all of humanity including himself die than let Splinter live.
  • Pushes Leo to the brink of his physical capabilities by having him fight hordes of foot bots without rest. When he defeats them all, he has Tiger Claw, Fishface, and Rahzar brutally beat him down and deals the finishing blow after they failed to do so. This cripples Leo, breaks his leg, and puts him into a coma for three months and maybe also damaged his vocal cords, as his voice is deeper for the rest of the series.
  • Helps the Kraang in their invasion of Earth. He later beats Splinter down and almost kills him by throwing him down a drainpipe and likely would have succeeded had Karai not saved him.
  • Mutates Anton Zeck and Ivan Steranko into Bebop and Rocksteady respectively for stealing his helmet, the Kuro Kabuto, and for when they tried to capture Karai without his permission.
  • Sells out the Earth to Kraang for him to invade and allows it to be destroyed, allowing Kraang Prime to mutate several innocent people and showing no concern.
  • Uses several brainwashing worms on his enemies, including Karai, his own adoptive daughter, and Raphael.
  • While he asks Baxter Stockman to restore Splinter's mind, it is only so he'll be aware of what's happening before Shredder kills him.
  • In the original timeline, due to blaming Splinter for Karai's disappearance, he takes the opportunity to kill him instead of saving the world from the Triceratons.
    • This directly leads to the Triceratons destroying Earth with the Black Hole Generator, making Shredder intentionally responsible for the destruction of Earth, killing billions of people. He even says that he doesn't care if the world was ending, and he himself was also going to die as well, because he only cared about killing Splinter out of spite and is happy enough to gain his victory. His actions anger and horrify even Tiger Claw, his loyal right-hand man.
    • What makes this worse is he let’s the whole Earth be destroyed just because Splinter was happy with Tang Shen, and gets Karai killed too, showing how little he really cares about her.
    • He also could have waited until Splinter disarmed the bomb before killing him which would have spared the world even if Splinter would have died. This proves that Shredder is telling the truth when he tells Tiger Claw he doesn't care for the human race and genuinely wanted them to be destroyed.
  • In the revised timeline, he fails to kill Splinter, who defeats and cripples him in battle. He has himself mutated into Super Shredder and (albeit, due to the mutagen's unstable influence) almost kills Karai by throwing a truck at her which likely would have been the case had April not used her telekinesis to send the truck back at him.
  • In “The Super Shredder,” after his mutation, he assaults Splinter for an extended period of time for his own satisfaction and refused any help from him when he pointed out the mutagen was making him unstable. He then breaks Splinter's leg before threatening to kill all his loved ones after he kills him, which ultimately forces Splinter to blow up the only platform holding the both of them up and take Shredder down with him as they both plummeted into the abyss, seemingly killing them both, although they both ultimately survive for the time being.
  • He torments Leo when he is clearly exhausted and incapable of fighting back before trying to kill him by crushing him to death. Furthermore, he ruthlessly attacks Leo and attempts to kill him again in the same battle despite him already being gravely injured and crawling towards his weapon. This results in him being crippled to the point of needing immediate medical attention.
  • He taunts Karai by saying she will die in a burning building just like her mother. He severely injures her after defeating her and leaves her to die in the burning building where she would have suffocated to death due to lack of oxygen had it not been for Leo saving her and giving her CPR.
    • This shows how he ultimately subverts his love for Tang Shen and Karai, thus forgetting what motivated him in the first place, even after his mutation, as while the mutation and the stabilizer affected his moral agency, he still willingly had both injected into him for the sake of revenge, even making sure he could destroy a hologram of Karai without feeling anything after using the stabilizer.
  • In the fight at the Wolf Hotel, where he first battled the turtles, he gravely injures Slash by throwing him into the hotel's sign which electrocuted him and knocked him unconscious. He then violently beats down Raphael and nearly throws him off the building, which forces Casey Jones arrest his momentum and be thrown off the building instead, where he has to save himself but still collides headfirst into a garbage truck which incapacitated him for the rest of the battle. He injured April with his claws and when he has to battle Splinter again, he shoots his claws at Raph and April, forcing Splinter to protect them.
  • He brutally impales Splinter in front of April and Raphael, forcing them to watch in horror as he hurls him off the building to his death, combined with his previous injury. After killing Splinter for good, he only bears satisfaction, as he says that he will no longer haunt him.
    • This action causes Splinter to give up on redeeming him, as in “Owari,” he tells Leo that Shredder must be put down for good.
  • In “Owari,” when the Turtles fight him, he picks them off one by one and knocks anll but Leo off the building and attempts to kill them all during their final confrontation, most notably Leonardo. Before the fight even starts, he tries burning them to death with a Molotov.
  • While he shows remorse for his crimes and honorably takes himself and Kavaxas back to the Netherworld, he doesn’t truly redeem himself, as he never tries to actually make up for everything he did.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Even though he subverts his love for Karai and Tang Shen, when Leo asks him if he was destined to be a demon, Shredder hesitates to hurt him and shows remorse at how evil he became, showing he was not in full control of himself or his actions at the time due to the mutagen and the stabilizer's influence.
    • While he goes back to trying to kill Leonardo after Leonardo attacks him, these words still sink into him as he is willing to go back to the Netherworld while doing an honorable sacrifice by pushing Kavaxas back in, with the implication being that Shredder is remorseful and doing so to atone for his past actions, as he openly tells Kavaxas "we do not belong here, demon!" This makes him too remorseful to be NPE even if he doesn’t truly redeem himself.
  • He has some respect for his henchman and allies:
    • He respects Tiger Claw the most as he calls him his old friend at one point and makes him his second-in-command of the Foot Clan without pragmatic reasons, even telling Karai to treat him with the most respect.
    • He seems genuinely appreciates Baxter Stockman’s loyalty despite calling him a lowly housefly, even occasionally giving him snacks such as when he successfully brainwashed Karai via brain worm.
    • Despite Hun’s failures, he doesn’t seem to threaten him in any way and the worst things he does to Hun is the rather lenient punishment of making him clean up the chemical factory. He also gives Hun permission to take charge of the chemical factory, believing success is to be rewarded and failure is to be punished.
    • He shows genuine affability toward Bradford and Xever as he believes Bradford to be his greatest pupil and offers him a second chance after failing only once. He also frees Xever from jail. Plus, despite threatening them, he never kills them. Not to mention, he is also horrified of when they get mutated after his first fight with the Turtles.

Trivia[]

  • He is the only version of Shredder to be Inconsistently Heinous, making him one of the fewest versions of the character to not be Pure Evil.
