Godzilla... Truly a god incarnate.
~ Kayoco Anne Patterson remarking Shin Godzilla's status as a godlike being.

Godzilla (ゴジラ, Gojira), also known specifically as Shin Godzilla, is the titular main protagonist turned antagonist of the 2016 kaiju film of the same name, the first installment of the Reiwa era within Toho's Godzilla franchise.

It is a prehistoric sea kaiju who was mutated by feeding on radioactive waste dumped into Tokyo Bay in the 1950s, giving it the unusual ability to spontaneously mutate its own DNA and rapidly evolve to adapt to new situations and threats. Godzilla remained dormant underwater until 2016, when it came ashore to recklessly wreak havoc on the Japanese capital city of Tokyo.

It was motion-captured by Mansai Nomura.

Its Evil Ranking[]

What Makes It Heinous?[]

In General[]

  • It shares nearly all similarities and characteristics to its original counterpart:
    • It serves as a metaphor of bureaucratic paralysis and national trauma (specifically referencing the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami as well as its Fukushima nuclear disaster). Its mere existence is the systematic failure of the government protecting people and its relentless advance underscore how powerless and sluggish humans are in the face of such an existential crisis.
    • Though it started as an animal recklessly causing destruction without malicious intent, it began to intentionally cause destruction after MOP bombs injured it and began retaliated against humanity without any regard for catastrophic consequences.
    • Due to its body horror resemblance and bizarre biology, it is more of a paranormal entity with unfathomable power rather than just a typical kaiju.
  • When comparing to its fellow IH counterparts like the original Godzilla, who continuously rampaged Tokyo, or Godzilla Earth, who wiped out all kaiju and humanity, Shin Godzilla does pass the heinous standard due to its apocalyptic existence endangering Earth and putting the human race to a much worse fate than death through a massive hive of rapidly-evolving, radioactive creatures overrunning them.

Shin Godzilla[]

  • Upon surfacing, it flooded the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line Tunnel with its bodily fluids.
  • It destroyed several boats, the Asahi Bridge and the New Nomi Bridge as it pushed its way through the Nomi River in Ota ward.
  • It proceeded to recklessly rampage the Kamata district upon making landfall, destroying several buildings and shoving many cars aside as it headed toward the special ward of Shinagawa while also pouring red radioactive liquid from its gills.
    • Shortly before stopping its movement in Shinagawa, it toppled an apartment building and killed a family inside it.
  • After self-mutating to its third form in Shinagawa, it continued rampaging through the special ward without much thought.
  • As it overheated and returned to Tokyo Bay, it left behind an additional trail of destruction and radioactivity around Ota.
  • It returned to Japan in its fourth form and slowly rampaged its way toward the capital metropolitan city of Tokyo without much consideration, even after the JSDF attempted to stop it during Operation Taba.
    • While it barely reacted to an all-out attack by the JSDF during Operation Taba, it did retaliate by flinging a portion of the Maruko Bridge at the infantry tank unit, which managed to visibly crush one of the retreating tanks.
  • After MOP bombs managed to injure the kaiju, it angrily retaliated by unleashing its atomic power to destroy the American B-2 Spirit stealth bombers, the EC-225LP helicopter carrying the Prime Minister and his ten Cabinet members, and three districts of Tokyo while also leaving high levels of its waking radioactivity around them. Though the Prime Minister was slow to respond Godzilla's attack, his death is undeserving.
  • Though it remained dormant after expending huge amounts of energy, it shot down any surveillance equipment that approached its defensive mechanisms.
    • Furthermore as Rando Yaguchi's team studied Godzilla, they learned its cells were capable of continuously evolving and potentially creating independent lives. In this scenario, Earth could be plunged by a massive horde of hostile mutated creatures, which would lead to the extinction of the human race, if Godzilla wasn't stopped currently.
      • With this revelation, Godzilla was indirectly responsible for coercing the United States to drop a hydrogen bomb onto it as part of a United Nations task force, which would turn the entire nation of Japan into a completely uninhabitable wasteland despite the U.S. and UN promising to reconstruct it shortly afterward.
  • After two unmanned N700 Series bullet trains attacked it during Operation Yashiori, it became cautious of the strategy and retaliated by unleashing its atomic energy against a horde of American MQ-9 Reaper drones, though this reckless expense gave an opening for detonated buildings to fall on top of the kaiju and a group of concrete pump trucks to forcefully inject the blood coagulant into its internal cooling systems.
    • Despite this, it managed to fight back by firing its atomic breath to annihilate the trucks injecting the coagulant but, with such reckless expense of atomic energy, this led to its ultimate downfall after another group of trucks fully injected the coagulant to cease its internal nuclear reaction and freeze it in place, just in time to prevent its proportions from overrunning Earth.
  • Though it would be incapacitated by the coagulant, it continued its evolution process by fissioning an army of humanoid creatures capable of combating humanity, which would imply its return after unfreezing.

What Makes It Inconsistent?[]

  • Much like its original counterpart, Shin Godzilla is INCREDIBLY tragic and sympathetic to be NPE or PE as it was once a docile creature living underwater in Tokyo Bay for an unperturbed period of time until the U.S. illegally dumped barrels of radioactive waste into the seabed, which put it into an endless state of agony and pain throughout its life after it fed on and adapted to the radioactivity (even when it is forcefully mutating against its own will).
  • It has severe moral agency issues as it is still an animal driven by sheer adaptability rather than evil conscience and its retaliatory strikes against the JSDF and the U.S. military were done entirely in self-defense.
    • In addition, it is a villain by proxy due to its spontaneous mutations keeping it from being killed and forcing it to become the rampaging kaiju it is now.
  • Its fate of being frozen in place by the blood coagulant makes it a scapegoat, which is a reminder for the audience that no matter how monstrous and unstoppable Godzilla really is - it is still a misunderstood force of nature awakened by humanity's hubris.

Trivia[]

  • It is one of the three mainline Godzilla incarnations to be classified as IHs, the others being the original and Earth.
  • A deleted cut sequence showed Shin Godzilla's third form puking bodily fluids to flood the surrounding area and melt the tires of cars, causing them to wobble into the ground. Had it exploited in the film, it would make this Godzilla intentionally more grotesque than traditionally terrifying.
