Shawn is the main antagonist of the 2016 sitcom The Good Place. He is the lead demon of The Bad Place who's job is to torture everybody in The Bad Place, as well as passing any new systems or ideas about new torture methods.
He is played by Marc Evan Jackson.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Tortured a vast majority of humanity in The Bad Place in extreme and torturous methods.
- Doesn't change torture methods for different levels of evil people - instead, everyone gets the same extreme torture despite the fact that some of these people were likely very close to The Good Place -considering The Good Place was only for the very best of people, Shawn is likely using extreme torture methods to torture many decent people.
- Shows extreme sadism while torturing people, often smiling and laughing while doing so.
- Is shown to torture animals too, displayed when he exclaims in annoyance he 'had just gotten the puppies to climb into the cannon.
- Threatens to torture the humans using a Michael suit, making them think he betrayed them which further shows his sadism.
- Treats his co-workers poorly, often cocooning them whenever they disagree with him.
- Threatens to torture Michael personally for eternity despite him being a demon.
- Is implied to have had Simone killed in order for her to be in the last experiment to make the 4 humans uncomfortable in their experiment (which was them attempting to save humanity).
- Tried to cheat in the experiment by putting a demon into it in order to win the case so he can keep torturing humanity.
- Places a Bad Janet into the experiment posing as a Good Janet, marbelising and imprisoning Good Janet in the process.
- Was initially willing to let The Judge erase the world so Michael didn't 'win' against him.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is reasonably tragic - he has spent billions of years doing the same thing over and over again and it's taken an understandable toll on him, with him being tired and bored of it before the humans and Michael came against him.
- Shawn is the only one here who has the option to accept the deal - he has no need to, and he's the only one with the power to, and yet he still accepts it. This saves all of humanity as well as all animals in both the afterlife and the actual world and he doesn't go back on the deal.
- He genuinely redeems himself, agreeing the system is flawed and helping Michael designing a new afterlife to save humanity.
Trivia[]
- He is so far one of just two 'The Good Place' villains to be Inconsistently Heinous, the other being Michael.
- Ironically, both villains are redeemed.
