They can't tell me what I've seen 'cause only I know what I've seen!
~ Shaw after Elliot escaped his grasp.
Alright, Lorraine. Let's kiss this bear good night.
~ Shaw preparing to kill Boog - his most famous quote.
If I don't stop them… it'll be a total reversal! Of the natural order. They laugh at Old Shaw, but you'll see. The truth… will be revealed.
~ Shaw informing Bobbie, Bob, and Mr. Weenie about a supposed conspiracy of animals taking over human civilization.

Shaw is the main antagonist of Sony Pictures Animation's Open Season franchise.

He is a sadistic poacher who enjoys hunting animals as a hobby while also seeking to stop them form taking over mankind like he falsely assumes.

He was voiced by Gary Sinise in the first film and by Trevor Devall in Scared Silly.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He killed several animals and mounted their heads on his wall in his cabin.
  • Upon spotting Elliot, he sadistically crashed into him with his car, causing his antler to break and fall off and then tying him to his car trunk in the aftermath.
  • Upon spotting Elliot walking on his hind legs drinking coffee, he tried to run him over again in a wild car chase, nearly getting other people run over by his car.
  • When Boog begun fighting Elliot publicly, he made an attempt to kill them by shooting at them, only to be stopped by Sheriff Gordy.
  • Upon spotting Boog and Elliot in the woods, he made another attempt to kill them both, which also indirectly caused the dam to be destroyed in the aftermath, flooding the animals in the forest onto Open Season hunting grounds.
  • He planned to kill the animals in the forest too as he stated that he intended to crush a "rebellion" that he believed they would start against mankind.
  • Upon realizing that Boog is in his cabin, he made another attempt to kill him while sadistically mocking him as he searched for him.
  • He made one last attempt to kill Boog on the hunting grounds and when he believed that he killed Elliot with his gunshot, he showed no remorse and instead smiled at it.
  • He tried to convince Gordy to allow Open Season to be legal again in spite of the fact that this would have endangered the animals in the woods and might have gotten them killed.
  • He made an attempt to kill Boog and the other animals, which would have created a body count of at least several more animals as well.
  • He made an attempt to kill Boog, Elliot, and Mr. Weenie in the lava minecarts.
  • He made one last futile attempt to kill Elliot only for Boog to interfere.
  • All in all, he's aware of the animals' sapience as he saw them perform acts that prove that they were and in the end, one of his reasons for trying to kill them was to prevent them from taking over mankind like he falsely believes they will.
  • While he may be seen as crazy and mentally ill due to living in the woods for a long time and seeing things that aren't there, such as when he tries to save a couple from a dog who was enslaving them and believing his gun is a real living thing, this doesn't affect his moral agency as he clearly knows right from wrong and is extremely sadistic in his actions.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is played for laughs far too often to be NPE, with numerous comedic moments such as him playing his gun Lorraine like an electric guitar, him having a comical argument and insult battle with Beth, him theorizing that animals are conspiring to take over mankind, him mistakenly believing Mr. Weenie was driving a car with a comical reaction to it and accidentally driving off the road because of it, him explaining to a couple of strangers that he believes animals intend to take over mankind with his whole vision of them doing so, him talking to Boog's toy bear while playing his gun like a guitar again, his reaction to Boog rising up and glaring at him before he literally tied him up with his gun, him getting hurt in various slapstick ways by the animals before being tied to the top of their van with him yelling in the aftermath when the same couple mistook him for a sasquatch, him becoming a tourist in the sequel where he explains that he used to shoot things with his gun but now he shoots things with his camera, his interactions with his two dimwitted Canadian assistants in his scheme, him revealing that he keeps his gun in a pink bed, him licking poop to see if it's from the Werewolf, him crying out in agony in a dramatic way when the animals steal his airplane, him getting a hornet nest thrown onto his face causing his cheeks to blow up and get pimples on them, one of the animals tricking him into rubbing a porcupine's quills onto his face mistaking it for a washcloth, and him getting shot in the butt by a dart.
  • He can be seen as a genuine extremist as while part of his reasoning for killing the animals was sadism, another part of it was because he believed that they will take over and enslave mankind, and he even tried to rescue the couple from a dog whom he mistakenly believed was enslaving them to worship him.
