ā€œ I spent fifty years reliving what they did to her. This is who I am inside. ā€ž
~ Shadow embracing his path of revenge.
ā€œ The last time I sat beneath stars like thisā€¦ I was with her. I've felt this pain for so long. It's all I know. ā€ž
~ Shadow describing the pain he feels inside him since Maria's death, the very source of his bitterness and despair.

Shadow the Hedgehog is a minor character in the 2022 film Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the secondary antagonist of its 2024 threequel Sonic the Hedgehog 3.

He is a vengeful and powerful anthropomorphic hedgehog that was created as part of a secret government experiment called Project Shadow, ran by the Guardian Units of Nations fifty years prior. During his time as a science experiment project, he befriended a young human girl named Maria Robotnik, who was the granddaughter of Professor Gerald Robotnik, who was in charge of running the project. Fifty years later, in 2024, he would reawaken from stasis and seek to avenge Maria's death, encountering Team Sonic in Tokyo in the process.

He is voiced by Keanu Reeves.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • After awakening, he immediately fought and defeated the science lab employees and soldiers looking after him before escaping to Tokyo and set parts of it ablaze when G.U.N. went to hunt him down.
  • He refused to talk with Team Sonic after noticing them jumping out of a G.U.N. helicopter, before injuring the entire team and making his escape via a motorcycle.
  • He helped the Robotniks steal the keys to the Eclipse Cannon.
  • He knocked out and imprisoned Team Sonic by chaining them to a pole after he noticed them searching for him, before tying them up and leaving them to die by charging up a black hole against them and destroying an entire mountain because of it.
  • He critically injured Tom after mistaking him for Commander Walters due to his disguise. While he did express shock over this, he doubles down and attempts to justify it once Sonic rage fully confronts him.
  • He powered up the Eclipse Cannon for Gerald Robotnik so the explosion could destroy Earth as well as kill them and Ivo, who was only told about the true plan when it was too late for him to escape, for the intention of avenging Maria.
  • He hypocritically called out Sonic for letting vengeance get the best of him and "abandoning" his friends to get revenge while mocking him about Tom, even though he himself was letting vengeance and anger get better of him.
    • While Sonic was filled with hatred and vengeance, Sonic only targeted Shadow while the black hedgehog himself targeted the whole entire world, and even when Sonic went to Wade for the Master Emerald, all he did was zip it away from him without actually harming Wade, showing that Sonic was still better at handling his anger than him.
    • Even when Sonic was close to killing Shadow, he was showing hesitation to do the deed while Shadow was riling and goading him to do it.
  • Despite the heinous standard being so high, Shadow manages to stand out for playing a vital role in Gerald's plan to destroy Earth by powering up the Eclipse Cannon with chaos energy, as well as a personal villainy to Sonic. He even willingly did all the awful thing Gerald "suggested" rather than taking them as orders, thus preventing him to fail the Heinous Standards to him.
  • Although he has some comedic moments, such as Maria drawing a bunny face on his glass cabinet, running into pastries while pulling her with roller skates, calling Team Sonic a "colorful bunch", saying "Boo" to Knuckles only to scare him, and making "revenge guac" with Agent Stone while watching a telenovela before stating the love interest should kill both suitors, it doesn't really lighten his character nor detract from his villainy since they just shows how grim and dark he is. Not to mention some of these happened in the past before he became the misanthropic alien he is now.
    • He even changes the normally comedic tone of the movie with some of his actions and nearly having Sonic to become a vengeful individual like him because of nearly losing Tom.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is far too tragic and sympathetic, as he struck a friendship with a human child named Maria, only for her to die in an explosion caused by G.U.N., which he and Gerald were wrongfully blamed for, and being stuck in stasis for 50 years.
    • If what he said to Sonic is any indication, he spent his entire time in stasis reliving Maria's death.
  • He genuinely loved Maria Robotnik due to her being the first person to treat him not just as an actual person, but a friend as well. His actions over the course of the film were also due to him wanting vengeance for her death by the hands of G.U.N., which makes him an Anti-Villain.
  • He has some insecurities regarding his alien nature, genuinely wondering if it made him dangerous to be around.
  • He has respect towards Sonic for helping him cope with Maria's death, allowing him to move past his bitterness and rage. Even beforehand, Sonic was the first person he truly seemed to empathize with after he accidentally wounded Tom, comparing his pain to the time he lost Maria. It's also worth noting that when Sonic began to lose his super form as they were blocking the eclipse canon's laser, Shadow kicks him out of the way before he completely powered down, saving his life.
  • Even before his redemption, he showed genuine standards.
    • After delivering a near-fatal blow to Tom Wachowski due to Shadow mistaking him for Walters, he was genuinely taken aback that he hurt an innocent person. This, combined with Sonic grieving over Tom's unconscious body reminding him of when he first lost Maria, causes Shadow contemplate if he's just as bad, if not worse, than G.U.N.
    • He also showed some hesitation towards Geraldā€™s plan of destroying the earth, asking him if this is what Maria would've wanted.
  • After Sonic was able to get through to him, he redeemed himself by helping destroy the Eclipse Cannon and save the earth, and by extension, billions of lives, almost sacrificing his life in the process.
    • He even convinced Dr. Robotnik (of all people) to do the right thing, allowing the doctor to redeem himself as well.

Trivia[]

  • Shadow is the only Sonic Cinematic Universe villain to be currently Inconsistently Heinous. Dr. Robotnik used to be one, before relying too much on Fridge Horror and failing the Heinous Standards to the Unnamed Echidna Warrior and his grandfather.
  • This is one of the only three versions of Shadow to be Inconsistently Heinous alongside his Sonic X and Sonic the Comic Online! counterparts.
