“ | Have any of you ever dreamed of working for the greatest supervillain of all time?! | „ |
~ Scarlet Overkill introducing herself. |
Scarlet Overkill is the main antagonist of Illumination's 5th feature film Minions, the spinoff and the prequel to the Despicable Me film series, and a minor character in Despicable Me 4.
She is a stylish, ambitious and powerful criminal mastermind who is determined to dominate Britain and become the first super villainess. She is also the wife of Herb Overkill as well as the former boss-turned arch-nemesis of Kevin, Stuart and Bob.
She was voiced by Sandra Bullock in her first villainous role.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Heinous?[]
- Being the world's first female supervillain, it's possible that she committed heinous crimes in the past.
- She was seen in her villains channel commercial standing on a pile of bodies.
- She planned to have the crown of Queen Elizabeth stolen to overthrow her.
- She attempted to kill Bob for "betraying" her.
- Once Bob gave the crown and deemed her the new queen, she took the trio of minions into the Dungeons and locked them all in order to get them tortured.
- She launched a fashion designer out of a window after he failed to get her hair done correctly.
- She set explosives after capturing Bob and Stuart in order to kill them and took Bob's teddy bear as a memento.
- After she saw the Minion tribe, she planned to wipe them all out for no reason other than the three individuals she hates are members of this race. Even though they were immortal, she was never aware of it and it does not justify that she intended a genocide on them.
- While El Macho and Balthazar Bratt are worse with the former trying to destroy at least ten cities and kill millions of people and the latter almost killing everyone in Hollywood by sending them into space, Scarlet stands out alongside both of them due to several reasons:
- She has fewer resources than El Macho since he is the commander of an entire army of purple killer minions while she only has a league of villains by her side and advanced weaponry.
- Although Bratt has less resources consisting of a giant robot, a weaponized keytar, multiple 80s themed gadgets and bubblegum, he never resorted to attempting genocide and only tried to destroy one city while Scarlet attempted to wipe out the entire minion race simply because she didn't like the way they looked and also because she wanted to spite Kevin, Bob and Stuart and show them just how much she hates them and their kind.
- Attempted genocide is very unique for the franchise as most of the worst villains (e.g. Bratt, El Macho and Dr. Nefario) only attempt to commit populicide without wiping out entire races or ethnic groups, which allows Scarlet to pass the heinous standard and stand out on her own as her attempted genocide on the minions is taken very seriously by the narrative.
- She's also the only villain in the franchise to actually have a kill count, as she was seen in her villain channel commercial standing on a pile of bodies.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- Just like every other Despicable Me villain, she is played for laughs too much to be NPE and isn't really taken seriously until much later in the narrative and even then her defeat is still played for laughs (twice as a matter of fact), with her first having her own plan to blow up Kevin backfire as he grabs ahold of her and Herb and later getting frozen by a young Gru after trying to pettily steal the Queen's crown one final time. She's also played for laughs several times throughout the movie.
- She genuinely loves her husband Herb, an example being when she rescued and tried to escape with him when she thought Kevin would explode.
- When Bob gave her his teddy bear's toy crown because he felt pity for her, she was genuinely touched and thanked Bob for his kindness, even though she attempted to kill him.
- She was genuinely grateful to all the villains that attended her coronation and even complimented the musician on her talent as well as thanking the Archbishop.
