~ Scaramouche's first appearance in Sumeru. |
The Wanderer, formerly known as Scaramouche, and by his former codename The Balladeer, is a major antagonist and boss fight-turned-playable supporting character in the 2020 action role-playing fantasy video game Genshin Impact.
Scaramouche was originally created by Raiden Ei as a prototype for the Shogun puppet before being abandoned. Eventually, he joined the Fatui and became the Sixth Harbinger, being responsible for attempting to escalate the Inazuman Civil War. After gaining the Electro Gnosis, he reappears in Sumeru and attempts to ascend to godhood before being defeated by the Traveler and Nahida.
He was voiced by Luyin in Chinese, Tetsuya Kakihara in Japanese, and Patrick Pedraza in English.
Synopsis[]
This section is too long. Visit here for more details: Scaramouche's Synopsis on the Villains Wiki.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General[]
- He constantly mistreats and belittles his Fatui subordinates for their own failures.
- According to the Husk of Opulent Dreams artifact set, he slaps one of his subordinates for simply questioning him and is shown to take delight in their terrified expressions.
- Even after regaining his original personality, he still harbors some resentment against his creator Ei for "betraying" him, when all she wanted was to let him decide for himself as she could not have power over him due to his sentience, making his hatred towards her unjustified.
- While other villains have done worse than him, Scaramouche stands out by destroying the Raiden Gokaden with lesser resources due to only having immortality while lacking elemental powers and political resources at the time. In addition, his crimes of causing the deaths of several Watatsumi soldiers by accelerated aging via the Delusions are unique enough for him to stand out.
Event and Archon Quests[]
- Before the events of the game, he caused the destruction of the Futsu, Hyakume, and Senju schools of the Raiden Gokaden along with the decline of the Isshin school as revenge for the second "betrayal". This led to the the downfall of the Kaedehara Clan, the lives of countless innocent swordsmiths being threatened, and the Kamisato Clan nearly being dismantled if it were not for Yae Miko's intervention.
- In addition, his actions indirectly caused the creation of the Kagotsurube Isshin, a sentient blade, by an exiled swordsmith of the Isshin art. As a result, the blade has possessed many people and killed several by the people it possessed.
- During the Unreconciled Stars event, he attempts to murder the Traveler due to them having previously fought the Fatui along with Fischl and Mona, even though none of them were a threat to his goal of investigating the meteorites. Despite this being simple "kill-the-heroes" villainy, he eventually outgrows it with later updates adding more depth to his heinous acts.
- He was responsible for Delusions being smuggled to the Watatsumi Army which caused the deaths of several soldiers by accelerated aging from the Delusions, including Teppei who was a friend of the Traveler. In addition, this would have extended the Inazuman Civil War which would have caused countless more deaths on both sides.
- When the Traveler confronted Scaramouche in the Delusion Factory, Scaramouche justifies all the deaths caused by the Delusions by saying that they were going to die anyways with or without the Delusions, even though the Fatui were responsible for starting the Inazuman Civil War in the first place.
- He even goes as far as to taunt the Traveler with Teppei's death just to anger them and have them be affected by the Tatarigami.
- He uses the Tatarigami in the Delusion Factory to incapacitate the Traveler before attempting to kill them. While Scaramouche later abandoned killing the Traveler, that was only because Yae Miko offered Scaramouche the Electro Gnosis in exchange for the Traveler's life.
- He willingly participates in the plot created by Dottore and Grand Sage Azar to become a god.
- He attempts to kill Nahida and take the Dendro Gnosis from her.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Even though his tragedy does not justify any of his villainous actions, Scaramouche is still way too sympathetic to be Near Pure Evil for several reasons:
- He was abandoned by his creator, Raiden Ei, due to her deeming Scaramouche too gentle of an individual and left Scaramouche to live with the humans instead of destroying him. Despite Ei's benevolent intentions, Scaramouche didn't know the truth and created his own assumptions by seeing her actions as a "betrayal". This caused him to despise the gods and believe that they only value strength above all.
- Dottore manipulated him into believing that his friend, Niwa, betrayed him by killing his servant when in reality, Dottore killed Niwa.
- He befriended a child that soon died from illness and mistakenly believed that the child "betrayed" him by dying. This, along with what happened to Niwa, caused him to view humanity as worthless.
- He has sympathetic insecurities such as wanting to be a god only because he wants to prove that he was destined to be a god. In addition, he joined the Fatui to have a sense of purpose in their goals.
- His defeat at the hands of the Traveler and Nahida is played for sympathy.
- His sociopathic tendencies stem from the poor experiences he had with living with mortals, which gives him slight moral agency issues. However, he knows the difference between right and wrong, making this a minor prevention.
- He spared Kaedehara Yoshinari upon realizing that he was a member of Niwa's clan.
- His genuine, but one-sided care for Haypasia is proven by his concern towards his "first follower" being due to her witnessing his tragic backstory in-person. He also summoned the lightning storm only because the Traveler questioned if he genuinely concerned for Haypasia while doubting when Dottore does not wish for her to stay in Sumeru and continue receiving treatment there, thanking the Traveler for speaking up to him about Haypasia when Dottore wanted to kidnap her.
- He expresses great remorse towards his petty act of seeing Niwa's death and the death of Nagamasa at the hands of Katsuragi as a betrayal after knowing that Nagamsa had to be killed as he took the blame for Dottore's murder of Niwa. This, in addition to his role in the Case of the Eccentric caused the fall of the Isshin Art, caused his futile attempt at erasing himself from history which would eventually lead him to removing himself Irminsul in attempt to undo his past mistakes. While the effect was more akin to brainwashing, he was willing to let it happen to him, making it count as an actual moment of redemption.
- In addition, his action of erasing himself from Irminsul can be viewed as a suicide attempt due to his realization that the "second betrayal" was a lie, meaning that all of his crimes were done for nothing.
- He has some standards as he was horrified of what Dottore did to Niwa.
- Ultimately, he only chooses to regain his original personality despite being temporarily redeemed due to his memories being erased from Irminsul, knowing that he couldn't escape his crimes since remaining in his brainwashed state wouldn't change anything as they would be fated to happen anyways. He also partially redeems himself by deciding to help the Traveler to fight against the Fatui, and revenge on Il Dottore for manipulating him for his entire life, and thanking the Traveler and Nahida for giving him a chance to start over too, choosing to roam Sumeru as the Wanderer and deciding to help them in the future for letting him feel loved.
Trivia[]
- Scaramouche can be considered as a foil to Tartaglia, another Inconsistently Heinous character from Genshin Impact.
- Both of them are Fatui Harbingers who eventually became playable characters.
- However, both of them have severe differences from each other. While Tartaglia is genuinely affable and friendly towards the Traveler and others, Scaramouche is cruel and sadistic and mocks the Traveler at any opportunity he can get. While Tartaglia has a minor amount of concern for innocents when summoning Osial, Scaramouche shows no empathy for the Sangonomiya soldiers who died from using the Delusions. Despite all this, Tartaglia is still loyal to the Fatui while Scaramouche has deserted the Fatui after getting the Electro Gnosis and eventually turns against them.
