Flint Marko, better known as the Sandman, is the opening antagonist in the 2023 superhero video game Marvel's Spider-Man 2, the third installment of Insomniac's Marvel's Spider-Man series.
He is a mutated bank robber who faced Spider-Man for some time until unexpectedly disappearing. By 2020, Sandman would resurface and resume his villainy after being pursued by Kraven the Hunter shortly after the latter arrives at New York City to hunt down the villains in the area.
He was voiced by Leandro Cano.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Even before getting his powers, he was already a bank robber, who had robbed many banks as a way of supporting his daughter. It’s worth mentioning, that even in his situation, there was still better ways for him to have gotten the money, without having to steal from others to support his family.
- After getting his powers, he became one of Spider-Man’s most dangerous enemies, and attempted to kill the hero on multiple occasions.
- At some point, he attempted to rob The FEAST Shelter for their supplies, and presumably money.
- After being set off by Kraven (albeit having his daughter threatened by him), he turned into a giant sand monster, and wrecked several parts of the city endangering hundreds of people. It’s also shown, that his sand clones were attacking people inside buildings, and as shown in the following mission, several people were drowning in his sand, which would easily kill them. Though luckily, they were all saved by the Spider-Men. It’s also shown, that as a result of the sandstorm he caused, it stopped both the Police, and Hospital from doing their jobs, as they were either trapped, their supplies destroyed, or their cars/vans completely destroyed.
- As shown during his attempt to kill Peter, and Miles at pier 4, he was throwing boats, broken buildings, and vans at them, which as shown for the first part of the game, left that part of the city destroyed, and as a result, crime in that area majorly being on the rise.
- While the Heinous Standards are high, Sandman stands out for destroying a fair chunk of the city, with his limited resources.
What Make Him Inconsistent?[]
- He's too sympathetic and too tragic to be PE or NPE, as he made a genuine attempt at giving up crime and going straight for the sake of his family and was successful in doing so for years. It was only because of Kraven and his hunters constantly threatening them, as well as his inability to find his daughter during the whole fiasco, that Marko snapped and went ballistic. Even both Spider-Men felt bad for him after learning the truth.
- He deeply loves his daughter Keemia, as the only reason why he’s even a criminal in the first place, is because she’s ill, and he just wants her, and her mom, to have enough money to live off of, combined with having the money to purchase the medication, or even surgeries to make her condition more manageable proving he is an extremist and it's unknown if he killed people during his robberies before proving he sees robberies as a new way of life.
- According to Peter, he had a "pet the dog moment" where he abandoned his heist on the FEAST Shelter after some encouragement from May.
- He redeems himself while in prison, as he admits to either Spider-Man that he sincerely regrets everything he did, and is genuinely grateful when they state they will do their best to get him visitation rights with his family.
Trivia[]
- He was originally considered a Villainous Benchmark, as it was believed that he failed the Heinous Standards of the series. However, once it was pointed out that he wrecked most of the city, with little resources to his advantage, he was proposed and approved here.
- He is the only version of Sandman to be Inconsistently Heinous.
- In an earlier version of the second game’s story, he was going to play a bigger role, and be infected with a Symbiote, and help continue to cause chaos around New York despite his previous claims of remorse for his initial crimes beforehand. So it’s unknown, if his status would’ve been affected if he played a bigger role in the final game.
