Despair exists in the human heart... You can't erase that. So I'll reprogram the heart itself. Envy and hatred, sadness, anger... I'll get rid of all these negative emotions. As long as despair exists, tragedies will keep happening. I need to put an end to it!
~ Ryota

Ryota Mitarai is a major character from Danganronpa 3: The End of Hope's Peak High School.

He was voiced by Kanata Hongō in Japanese and by Justin Briner in English.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He attempts to use his Hope Video to try and brainwash all of humanity into ridding themselves of Despair. This act would have stripped humanity of their free will, and even Makoto says that it is just as bad as what Junko did.
  • Brainwashed Future Foundation soldiers and told them to kill Makoto and his group.
  • While he never killed anyone, he manages to stand out due to the attempted global brainwashing which is treated as worse than death and on a scale never before shown in the series.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He’s extremely tragic. He wanted to spread hope through his talent in creating anime. Unfortunately his work was used by Junko Enoshima to brainwash others. When he found out about this, he was blackmailed by Junko who threatened his classmates if he didn’t help her. After Class 77-B was brainwashed, he was left with the guilt of helping Junko come into power.
  • He had a friendship with the Ultimate Imposter, who he trusted. And when he redeemed himself, he was welcomed back with open arms and they embraced each other, which reduced Ryota to tears.
  • Despite not knowing them too well, he cared for the rest of Class 77-B, due to him not wanting Junko to brainwash them.
  • He feels extreme guilt and remorse over the role he played in causing the Tragedy.
  • He cared for the other members of Future Foundation, like Kyoko, who he attempted to defend from Juzo and Tengan.
  • He admires Makoto’s strength of character.
  • Ryota is a well-intentioned extremist as he only chose to brainwash the entire world in an attempt to undo the damage Junko did to the world and because he felt there was no other choice.
  • Ultimately, he redeems himself after being convinced by Class 77-B to join them on Jabberwock Island, which caused Ryota to stop the countdown for the brainwashing. He then went on to live with Class 77-B in peace.
