I understand love and I say to you... love is worthless. I've never needed anyone to satisfy me. I eat when I wanna eat, play with what amuses me, and kill whoever's in my way. I live as befits my nature. If no one can grasp that, then that's their problem.
~ Sukuna sharing his philosophy to Kashimo.
Ah! I knew it! The light feels best in the flesh! Cursed flesh is so boring! So now, where are the people?! The women?! What a wonderful era to reawakened! Women and children are crawling everywhere like maggots! How marvellous! It'll be a massacre!
~ Sukuna upon incarnating inside Yuji Itadori’s body after the latter ate his finger.
Stand proud. You were strong.
~ Sukuna praising Jogo; his most famous quote

Ryomen Sukuna, also known as the King of Curses, is one of the two main antagonists (alongside Kenjaku) of the manga/anime series Jujutsu Kaisen.

The strongest sorcerer in history, Sukuna, turned himself into a cursed object a thousand years ago by transferring his soul into his twenty indestructible fingers. He is resurrected into modern times when Yuji Itadori eats one of those fingers, making him able to possess the boy's body.

It is later revealed that Yuji's grandfather Wasuke was Sukuna's twin brother in his previous incarnation, making Yuji his "grandnephew" and descendant. This also explains why Sukuna is incapable of possessing Yuji's whole body at will.

He is the arch-nemesis of Yuji Itadori and Satoru Gojo, and the master of Uraume.

In the anime adaptation, he is voiced by Junichi Suwabe in Japanese and Ray Chase in English.

His Evilness Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

In General[]

  • Sukuna was known as one of the most dangerous sorcerers alive, due to his sick desire of causing murder and violence, mainly due to his sadism.
    • In fact, his essence was so evil that Curses were naturally attracted to his fingers.
  • He has caused a ton of personal villainous acts towards Yuji Itadori, only surpassed by Mahito, often tormenting him psychologically due to his bitter hatred of him. Because of his actions, Yuji would develop guilt to the point that he believed he needed to die.
  • While most characters tend to have comedic traits to lighten the tone of the series, Sukuna hardly possesses any comedic traits and is taken dead seriously by the characters. While his treatment of the Finger Bearing curse and his humiliation of Itadori in his innate domain can be seen as a bit funny, it’s more of the quirks of the characters around him that are comedic rather than Sukuna himself.

Past[]

  • Ate his own twin, whose reincarnation would become Jin Itadori, in the womb.
  • Was feared throughout Heian Era Japan as a vicious human and a cannibal, whom often ate people that Uraume cooked.
  • Fought and killed many people in the golden age of Jujutsu, such as the shamans of old, with his abilities.
  • Slashed Yorozu when she made moves on him.
  • Made a deal with Kenjaku to be split up into 20 fingers and reborn in the future.

Present[]

  • After his revival after a thousand years, Sukuna relished in the opportunity to kill women and children.
  • Took over Yuji's body, and would have killed Gojo and Megumi if Yuji didn't snap back with it.
  • When Yuji and Megumi were fighting the Curse in the juvenile center, Sukuna tried to betray them by trying to ally with the Curse (even threatening Megumi and Nobara), and then killing it when it refused.
  • Ripped out Yuji's heart to force him to not switch back while trying to kill Megumi, which resulted in his temporary death.
  • While he does fix Yuji with Reversed Cursed Technique, it was purely pragmatic due to wanting to keep an eye on Gojo and Megumi.
    • He then made Yuji agree to his deal of switching for a minute without any restriction, by fooling him into thinking he had any chance to defeat Sukuna, even cutting his head off.
  • Later when Yuji offered Sukuna access without any complication to heal Junpei, Sukuna sadistically refused and laughed at Yuji with Mahito after Junpei died due to his heart giving out.
  • After Mahito foolishly decided Sukuna is his ally and tried to get him to switch, Sukuna refused and threatened him that he would kill him if he tried again. He only spared Mahito due to them both laughing at Yuji's suffering together.
    • He would make good on this threat after Yuji jumped into Mahito's Domain resulting in him touching his soul, gravely injuring Mahito.
  • After Megumi exorcised the Bridge Curse, Sukuna sadistically revealed to Yuji that the Curses have become more vicious the moment he was awakened, in order to make him feel guilt.
  • After Jogo forcefully awakened him by feeding him 10 fingers, he forced Jogo, Mimiko and Nanako to bow.
  • After Mimiko ordered Sukuna to kill the person inhabiting Suguru Geto's body, he became furious at the disrespect and killed her by cutting her head off.
    • When Nanako tried to avenge her death, Sukuna killed her by dicing her up.
  • He offered to kill everyone in Shibuya if Jogo hit him once.
  • He got Manami and Negi killed by Jogo's meteor attack by threatening to kill anyone who ran before he allowed it.
  • He killed Jogo with his fire attack, although he deserved it.
  • During his fight with Mahoraga, killed many innocents in Shibuya, traumatizing Yuji, even making sure to go to the crater and make him look at the carnage he caused to further break him.
  • He only saved Megumi and Haruta out of pragmatism, even showing indifference to his domain getting Haruta killed.
  • Possessed Megumi's body and punched Yuji through several buildings.
  • Bit off Hana's arm.
  • Only told Uraume to ignore Yuji due to considering him too pathetic.
  • Killed Yorozu (and by extension Tsumiki), breaking Megumi's spirit.
  • Saved Kenjaku from being killed by Gojo only due to pragmatism.
  • Bathed in evil for a month to make sure Megumi couldn't resist him anymore.
  • Killed Gojo in their fight, on live stream as well with his students witnessing it.
  • Killed Kashimo in their fight afterwards.
  • Temporarily killed Higurama right in front of Yuji.
  • Decided to activate the merger (fusing Japan's population with Tengen into a beast that would destroy the world) out of spite towards Yuji for challenging him.
  • Nearly kiled Yuta, Maki, Kusukabe and Ui Ui (who's a child).
  • Killed Choso, Yuji's brother, right in front of him by burning him alive.
  • Tried to kill Todo and Hana.
  • When Yuji offered him redemption and to spare his life after activating his domain and explaining the value of life, he furiously rejected it and promised to tear Yuji asunder after killing everyone he held dear.
  • Tried to kill Yuji one last time before Nobara helped her friend defeat him.
  • Tried to crush Megumi's will to live again when the latter decided to resist him to help Yuji.
  • Rejected Yuji's final offer of mercy to live on inside his body, declaring himself as a curse.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He has a genuine tragic backstory, as he was shunned and ostracized by society due to his grotesque and misshapen body. This ultimately shape up his philosophy where he valued strength and completion over love and compassion.
  • Despite being an arrogant and sadistic individual, he is shown to be capable of showing his enemies who managed to gave him a tough and worthy challenge genuine respect and praises them to be a worthy opponent. This respect is shown to several characters such as:
    • Satoru Gojo. He gravely respects Gojo, and promises that he will be the first person he'll kill once he's free. He even express surprise that Gojo is not the leader of the Jujutsu Society, despite his immense strength and power. After a tough and brutal clash, when he finally kills him, he said that his fight was real fun, that he will never forget about him, and that he did well fighting against him.
    • Jogo. He was genuinely grateful for the 10 fingers Jogo gave him and allowed him a chance at a fight as a "token of appreciation" (even refraining from killing him twice beforehand). Despite being incredibly arrogant towards the cursed spirit during their fight, when he defeated him, instead of taunting him or insulting Jogo for losing in the fight, he was instead impressed by how strong Jogo was, explaining to the cursed spirit what he did wrong with his ideals and told Jogo in his final moments to stand proud and that he was strong.
    • Hajime Kashimo. After defeating Kashimo, he took the time to answer Kashimo's question, sharing his philosophy about strength, and even sincerely compliments Kashimo for being strong, before he dies.
    • Hiromi Higurama. He's genuinely impressed by Higurama's rapid growth and his ability to use a Domain Amplification, despite having been a sorcerer for merely two months.
    • And finally, even Yuji Itadori himself. After finally being defeated, Sukuna begrudgingly shows his respect towards Yuji, even acknowledging him by name.
  • He is shown to have a genuine friendship with his servant Uraume. It's shown he met them during the Heinan Era and felt sympathy for them after they accidentally killed their family with their ice power's, choosing to spare them and take them in with him, feeding them and even admitting he finds it endearing they aren't scared around him. This is best shown when Sukuna is happy to see his old friend after 1000 years. He is always shown to be quite affable and even respectful towards Uraume, something he never shows to anyone else. He even showed them forgiveness for interfering in his fight and failing to find his final finger. In the final chapter, he even comforts them as the two walk away to the afterlife to be reincarnated together.
  • He ultimately decided to redeem himself, choosing to become a good person if he is ever reincarnated. He even admitted to Mahito that he grew soft because he lost.

Trivia[]

  • Sukuna and Suguru Geto are the only Jujutsu Kaisen villains to be Inconsistently Heinous.
