“ | Haven't you figured it out yet, you dolt?! | „ |
~ Romeo (disguised as Vos) revealing his true nature to Jack, Jesse and Petra. |
“ | I'm done letting YOU make ME feel bad! I prefer to feel good, and I'm gonna feel real good when I send you two to a place where you'll never see the light of day! Ever… again! | „ |
~ Romeo before banishing Jesse and his/her friends to the Sunshine Institute. |
“ | There is a key difference between a good friend and a bad one. Good friends do what you ask. They enjoy what you make for them. They never betray you. Jesse is a perfect example of what we call a bad friend. Other 'bad friends' include, in no particular order: Fred, And Xara. Ultimately all losers who refused to appreciate the gifts they'd been given. Now me? I won't stand for ingratitude. So I took my gifts away. Oh, but then, then, just when I thought I'd found a promising new friend -- such a disappointment. That is when I had a brilliant idea. The perfect way to weed out the bad friends from the good. To be appreciated. I became Jesse. I was right, of course. The plan worked immediately. Jesse's good friends flocked to me, the better Jesse. And now poor Jesse is dead, having never learned his lesson. The saddest part of all, really, is that Jesse will never get to see how much better I've made Beacontown. (laughs) Oh, yes! (laughs again) | „ |
~ Romeo in the intro of "Above and Beyond" if Jesse had Ivor tell him he/she died. |
Romeo, also known as the Admin, is the main antagonist of the Minecraft: Story Mode series.
He is a desperate yet conniving person who gained superhuman abilities alongside his friends Fred and Xara before he turned evil and tried to take over their home planet, thus leading to Fred's demise and the Sunshine Institute being established, where Xara was sent to. Eventually arriving at Jesse's home planet, Romeo forced Jesse into extremely dangerous challenges so that he or she would become his "friend" and "champion", putting his/her friends at risk, and posed as Jack's friend Vos. He is Jesse's archenemy.
As himself, Vos, and the snowman, he was voiced by JB Blanc. As Jesse, he was voiced either by Patton Oswalt or Catherine Taber depending on whether Jesse is male or female. As Jack, he was voiced by Fred Tatasciore, who also voiced Mor'du in Brave and Donald Trump in Robot Chicken. As Petra, he was voiced by Ashley Johnson.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
Background[]
- When he tried to take over his own home dimension, Xara and Fred fought him off to protect it, so he killed Fred and imprisoned Xara.
- His method of killing Fred, although offscreen, was described as especially cruel as he slowly tortured him until he died, right in Xara's eyes.
- He covered his own home planet in bedrock, making it an especially dangerous place to live in because of the monsters that kept spawning with a lack of sunlight.
- One of the monsters he created was a Giant Enderman because he liked causing chaos to the natural order of things.
- In Romeoburg, he created "Romeo's Challenge", a dangerous arena with immensely powerful monsters and 600 stages, making him indirectly responsible for the deaths of his town's residents.
- He created the Sunshine Institute and imprisoned Xara in its strictest cell, labeling her as "Prisoner X".
- He kidnapped numerous other people and sent them to the Sunshine Institute as well to test if they are worthy, forcing those in the Mush Room to fight each other for food if they want to survive, and those in the Zombie Mines to collect rotten flesh as zombies try to kill them.
- While he has plenty of comedic moments, they don’t detract from his villainy, and just highlight how evil he is, like when he can’t comprehend why Jesse wouldn’t want to fight their friend to the death.
- When Jack, Sammy, and Vos visited the temple, Sammy and Vos got killed by Elder Guardians set as one of Romeo’s trap, giving Jack severe PTSD and vowing to never return there.
Minecraft: Story Mode[]
- He disguised himself as Vos and pretended to be trapped in the Sea Temple as well as creating an avatar for himself in the form of a Prismarine Colossus, which he used to try and kill Jesse, Petra, and Jack, either leading to Petra losing her sword, Miss Butter, or Jack losing his bad eye.
- He attacked Beacontown to get Jesse's attention and reversed the time to nightfall so that the citizens would get attacked by a horde of monsters, just so he can kill them in a fight he sees as entertaining.
- He even destroyed Reuben's memorial just to taunt Jesse.
- After his Prismarine Colossus avatar was killed by Jesse, he created another one in the form of a snowman and changed the temperature to a snowstorm, and allowed more monsters to attack Beacontown to create a deadly and unbeatable challenge for Jesse and his friends, which ended at the Awesome, Fantastic, Super-Deadly Icy Palace of Despair, where the gang lost Stella and Radar as they all tried to beat the challenge.
- It is later revealed that the snowstorm hit Beacontown's rival Champion City as well, forcing their Mayor Stella to join forces with Jesse.
- When Jesse had either Jack or Petra destroy the clock and end the snowstorm, Romeo revealed his true form and got furious at Jesse for having "cheated" in the challenge, even though Romeo himself cheated by making the challenge so dangerous it can't be beaten, leaving Jesse with no other option.
- He then made whoever destroyed the clock his new "champion" while sending the other two to the Sunshine Institute.
- He was a cruel boss to the Warden as he fired him for failing to notice that Jesse was too close to escaping the Institute and promptly turned him into one of his own prisoners.
- Although the Warden deserved it, it doesn't justify how bad of a boss he was towards him.
- It was even implied by Xara that he regularly visits the Warden, only to have fun with pressuring him.
- He tried to force his new "champion" to kill Jesse, only giving him/her a sword just to entertain himself, and when this failed, Romeo decides that he'll leave the Sunshine Institute in a fit of rage and keep it inescapable.
- He even outright states all he wanted was for Jesse to “fight his friend to the death”, which showcases his delusion and insensitivity, as Jesse would either fight Petra (a longtime friend and member of the Order of the Stone), or Jack (a major ally in helping Jesse find out more about the Admin), not caring that Jesse was fighting a close friend.
- He disguised himself as Jesse and went to Beacontown alongside Stella, usurping Jesse's role as Mayor, and turning it into a dictatorship where he lied about defeating "the Admin" and gaining his powers, making the people live in the fear of him and ruining Jesse's status as a hero.
- He tried to get Ivor to hunt down and kill anyone who may be posing as Jesse because it is chaotic, which he no longer sees as beneficial for his plans.
- He imprisoned Lukas in his tower above Beacontown when the latter came to visit the real Jesse.
- He made a point to force Axel and Olivia to remain his "friend" or he'll destroy Redstonia and Boom Town, and set up an example with Champion City. The following occurs on whether or not Jesse gave Xara her bed:
- Give Xara her bed - he causes Champion City to explode with Axel, Olivia, and even Stella watching in horror, resulting in the deaths of hundreds to thousands of innocent people. When Stella sobs over losing her citizens and her home, Romeo makes up a nasty comment about how she should shrug it off, claiming that she was always worried about Champion City and now has one less thing to worry about. In one of the interactions, it shows a former resident of Champion City crying to a member of Beacontown, with the Beacontowner being too scared of Jesse to stand up to him, or just believing Jesse is too proud to admit his fault.
- Don't give Xara her bed - Romeo outright murders Xara when she charges at him and calls him a liar, only refraining from destroying Champion City because he feels like he's already made his point. He then scolds one of his golems for failing to notice that Xara was even coming. What makes this worse is that he slowly choked Xara to death and that she was his seemingly last friend.
- He imprisoned all of the members of the New Ocelots led by Lukas, with the possible exception of Nell.
- If Jesse had Nell revert the statue back to what it was before Romeo changed it, Romeo teleported Nell to his prison as well.
- He twisted the "lessons" that he claims to have learned from Jesse. Instead of using his powers for good, Romeo decided that he'll just bedrock over Jesse's world as well so that he can remake it in his own image when he could have just made a new city.
- When Jesse, Jack, and Petra had their last fight with Romeo, the latter tried to prevent Jesse from using the Golden Gauntlet to de-power him, at one point trying to kill him in his Fred form even if Jesse tries to help him.
- Once his powers were taken away, he mocks Jesse for being a fake before Petra calls him out on it.
- While he initially shows respect and fondness towards Jesse, congratulating them for their accomplishments such as defeating the Wither Storm, he subverts this at the end of Giant Consequences after they "cheat" their way through his Ice Palace of Despair.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He cared for Xara and Fred, as he created the Terminal Space for them to enjoy so they could be happy, and the reason why Romeo turned against Xara and Fred was that he was upset at the three of them having to live their own separate lives instead of being able to remain together, which Petra admits was hard for all of them.
- Even when he killed Fred and imprisoned Xara, he still honored their memories together as he preserved the cabin that they all once lived in and even planted a birch tree there since it was Fred's favorite, and even in the scenario where he kills Xara he looks at her inventory with sadness and calls her "old friend", showing that he is remorseful for murdering her and still cared about her deep down.
- His insecurities about wanting to be liked and remorse for killing Fred and possibly Xara are played for sympathy, especially the Fred one since he was breaking down when he was turned into Fred and felt pained when at his old home.
- He ultimately redeems himself in the last episode. After being completely stripped of his powers, the reality of his actions settles in and he is immediately wracked with guilt, outright believing he should die for everything he's done. Which leads Jesse to make an important decision:
- Take Romeo with you - Romeo sacrifices his own life so that Jesse, Petra, and Jack can escape by luring the glitched Prismarine Colossus to him as he is trapped inside the collapsing Terminal Space, unless Jesse let Radar save the townspeople in the Underneath, in which case Romeo decides to make up for all of his crimes, starting with helping said townspeople rebuild their lives and, depending on Xara's current status, try to make amends with her or make up for killing her.
- Leave Romeo behind - Romeo still tries to do something good in his life by sacrificing himself so that the gang can escape the Terminal Space while the glitched Prismarine Colossus potentially kills him, but if Jesse let Radar save the Underneath's inhabitants, Romeo is unable to make his sacrifice as he is left behind in the Terminal Space forever.
Trivia[]
- He is one of three Minecraft: Story Mode villains to be Inconsistently Heinous, alongside the Wither Storm and Aiden. Out of them, Romeo is the only one who directly appears in Season 2.
- Eric Stirpe, who is one of the writers for the game, stated that there was going to be a scene where Romeo teleports all the citizens of Champion City to Beacontown right before bombing Champion City right in front of them, meaning that the entire population of Champion City would all be homeless rather than killed, but this scene was cut due to budget restrictions. Had the scene been included in the game, Romeo bombing Champion City wouldn’t be a Moral Event Horizon crossing as he would simply destroy the city without killing everyone in it. However, it’d still be a fairly heinous crime, as he still would’ve made an entire city’s population homeless just to teach Stella a lesson.
