~ Rick reveals to Morty that he intentionally got Beth and Jerry divorced. |
Richard "Rick" Daniel Sanchez, also known as Rick C-137, to identify him from alternative Ricks, is the titular main protagonist the Adult Swim animated sci-fi series Rick and Morty.
He is the (adoptive) father of Beth Smith C-131, grandfather of Morty Smith Prime and Summer Smith C-131, as well as father-in-law of Jerry Smith 5126. Despite being one of the show's protagonists, Rick is an on & off character, due to being an extremely immoral and reckless genius who commits horrific acts across the multiverse.
He was voiced by the show's co creator Justin Roiland in the first six seasons. From the seventh season onwards, he is voiced by Ian Cardoni.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General[]
- He's a selfish person who frequently puts people in dangerous situations just for his own needs, even sometimes leaving people in horrible situations just because he's bored.
- He is very verbally abusive towards his son-in-law Jerry, frequently insulting him and using him as an excuse to do anything he wants.
- It should be noted that he blames Jerry for Beth's perceived lack of potential, ignoring that Jerry was drugged and manipulated by the Citadel - as result of his own actions - to get with Beth and produce Mortys, making his bullying of Jerry exceedingly hypocritical and an act of victim-blaming, as Jerry's ability to consent was compromised.
- His thrill-seeking personality causes him to have "adventures" which cause the deaths of dozens, if not hundreds or thousands or even millions - evidenced by partying on impendingly doomed planets instead of saving them - of people on a regular basis.
- He makes Morty skip class and makes him risk his life dozens of times just out of his own selfish needs, frequently causing him to get injured or nearly killed. It comes to the point where after one adventure, Morty is so traumatized that he breaks down crying.
- He puts the life of his family at risk multiple times just so he can get what he wants, with people trying to kill them so regularly they eventually expect everyone they meet to be sent to or wants to kill them.
Past[]
- To prepare to kill Rick Prime, he bought weapons from known criminals and broke their deal by blowing them up, though this turned out to be a precaution due to (rightfully) suspecting they were planning to betray him.
- He killed at least hundreds of his alternative counterparts just to find the one that killed his family, with several of them being completely unrelated to his tragedy.
- He helped create the Citadel and made a barrier in the infinite universe where he separated all the realities where Rick is the smartest man in the universe from all the realities where he isn’t.
- It’s implied he caused an incalculable amount of Morty's getting tortured, enslaved and/or killed. This action also gave birth to Evil Morty and all the atrocities he committed.
- It's implied he has destroyed multiple realities in the past, which would make him have the highest body count in the series short of only Rick Prime, who murdered infinite people at least twice using the Omega Device.
- He committed countless atrocities through the universe, so many that he became the galaxy's most wanted mammal.
- He put his neighbors in his original dimension in a loop repeating the day his wife and daughter died, keeping them fully aware inside their minds in an 'And I Must Scream' state.
Season 1[]
- In the very first episode, he supposedly attempted to destroy his entire world just because he was drunk, nearly succeeding in doing so if it wasn't for Morty.
- He killed one of Morty's bullies, Frank Palicky, by freezing and causing his entire body to get shed into pieces, just so Morty could help him in getting some seeds.
- He caused Morty to break his legs and was originally remorseless about causing that act.
- He tricked Morty into mutilating a Galactic Federation officer by saying he was just a machine, presumably killing him in the process.
- He made Morty put seeds inside his ass just so he could get temporary genius-level intelligence to manipulate his family into thinking Morty was smart, then causing him to become mentally handicapped for 48 hours.
- He destroyed the Zigerion ship by lying about how dark matter was made and gave them the ingredients on how to create a large explosion that destroyed their ship.
- Though, they had kidnapped him to steal the formula in the first place, and he is implicitly traumatised by this evidence by him drunkenly threatening and terrorising Morty later, asking if he's a simulation.
- He caused the Earth’s destruction by turning all of humanity's population into grotesque monsters named the Cronenbergs, and then left his family in that reality with the exception of Morty who had to dig a grave for an alternate clone version for Morty who they assumed over their place with a new family.
- Rick could have undone this had be visited alternate realities where it was fixed, or applied himself, but was either too lazy, or as implied, was apathetic to Rick Prime's Earth being ruined.
- He tried to kill Morty's son, Morty Jr., after he gave birth to him, despite him being an infant, and although it was because he was rightfully suspicious of the alien, it is still treated as being pretty bad.
- He was happy when Summer told him that Lucius Needful tried to commit suicide; although Lucius Needful is still the literal devil who, amongst other things, sold a fur scarf that would have ended up flaying and wearing its human wearer instead.
- He stayed in his house having a party when Morty decided to risk his life to get crystals so they could get back to Earth. This is made worse by the fact that he lied about the crystals being able to bring them back to Earth while in reality were drug crystals. This also led to a partygoer and Abradolf Lincler dying; things he was apathetic to.
Season 2[]
- He sold weapons to an assassin named Krombopulous Michael just so he could get money to go to an arcade named Blitz and Chitz.
- He insulted Revolio Clockberg Jr. multiple times by calling him Gearhead, despite him not liking the name.
- He took Gearhead's privates and put them in his mouth.
- He attempted to kill Summer just because he thought she was a parasite with no evidence.
- In "Total Rickall," it's revealed he allowed Morty to be tortured by aliens and humiliated him in public at one point.
- He turned two soldiers who were about to shoot him into snakes.
- He created his ship with an A.I that would kill anyone that came close to him if it wasn't him.
- He created and enslaved an entire race just so they could fuel his car.
- He thought of killing Jerry and Beth just because he couldn't support them arguing.
- He sadistically killed his clones with an axe after he got his body back.
- He threatened to kill Morty if he told his mother that they went to a purge planet.
- He took sadism in killing people in self-defense during the purge.
Season 3[]
- He took sadism in leaving a Galactic Federation agent to die on his mind.
- He mercilessly killed a version of himself who was begging for his life even after he told him where Morty and Summer were.
- He teleported the Citadel into a Galactic Federation prison, killing hundreds of people in the process, some of whom weren’t his enemies.
- He ate human flesh when he was in an apocalyptic version of Earth just to avoid talking to Morty.
- He brutally killed several rats in self-defense.
- He made a cruel joke about that he wouldn't care if one of his victims was a father nor would he care if a child lost their parents.
- After Jerry threatened to turn him in to the government, Rick manipulated Beth into divorcing him and then revealed he did it on purpose to Morty just to break his spirit and make sure he would stay by his side in his adventures forever.
- He drunkenly made a Saw-like death game to kill the Vindicators, resulting in the deaths of all of them, with the exception of Supernova. Admittedly though, Vance and arguably some of the others deserved this when their crimes come to light, though Rick didn’t know about these and just spited them for a petty hatred.
- He created a neutrino bomb made to destroy the entire planet the Vindicators were in just so they could play his game, which would have killed billions.
- He left to people locked in a room for the rest of their lives just so he and Morty could escape.
- He once turned Morty into a mutant.
- He killed a guy dressed up as Santa Claus at one point.
- He killed dozens of U.S soldiers just so Morty could get a selfie with the president.
- He made clones of Beth and intentionally forgot who is real and who's not.
- He attempted to kill Jerry for getting back together with Beth.
Season 4[]
- He tried to antagonize Tony just because he was sitting on his favorite toilet seat, even when making a mocking speech.
- He brutally ate a snake alive out of anger because Morty for causing snakes to come after him and his family.
- He allowed the destruction of multiple planets during the so-called Heist, only to prove Morty a point.
- He punched Morty in the face for causing all the troubles, excusing it as to complete the cycle.
- He killed nearly all the Glorzos twice, killing millions of them as a result, though this was only after they possessed his and Morty's bodies.
- To spite Morty for mocking his "vat of acid" plan and then demanding a device that can turn back time (as Rick refuses to do "time travel"), Rick specifically designed the device in such a way that, whenever Morty used it, instead of sending him back in time as he initially believed, it instead sent him to another timeline to replace that timeline's Morty (who is horribly killed via dissolution). This results in the deaths of dozens, potentially even hundreds, of alternate Mortys before the main Morty realizes the truth.
- He tried to kill Space Beth (a believed clone of Beth) when she came to Earth.
Season 5[]
- He killed two soldiers just for coming close to his house.
- He tried to betray Mr. Nimbus despite the man being friendly to him.
- He indirectly caused a turkey to be mistaken as the president, making him also indirectly responsible for his attempted genocide on humanity.
- He used Jerry's Suckiness to gain approval among the Legions of Hell, but this gets turned around as the demons were actually using his Suckiness.
- He helped four Ricks kill their Gotron missing members.
- He kicked Summer out of his GoTron group just because there was someone who did her job better than herself.
- He attempted to hide the knowledge of Birdperson's daughter from him, so that they can still go on adventures.
- He did nothing to stop aliens from attacking Earth, killing millions of people in the process.
- He caused chaos by freeing his crow horse. While this was an accident, he didn’t show much remorse and simply ignored it.
Season 6[]
- He brought Mr. Frundles to his house despite knowing the danger he possessed, leading to the destruction of the reality's Earth when Season 2 Jerry released it.
- He replaced the new dimension's Smith-Sanchez family with family members from the old dimension after they were all killed.
- He used the Night versions of his family as slaves and escalated their conflict out of pettiness, resulting in the Night Family taking over completely and draining their money.
- He fired a laser beam at Cookie Magneto, an incompetent supervillain wannabe who was annoying him then kept another villain trapped in a container to have his fluids drain out his life and bring him to therapy.
- He turned Goldenfold into a fly while interrupting his therapy session for his (although he undid this and this actually helped Goldenfold.)
- Instead of spending time with his family on Christmas, he ended up creating a robot version of himself to spend time with them instead. The robot would end up giving Morty a lightsaber as a present, which he would drop down and cause to sink towards the center of the Earth. While Rick didn't intend for this to happen, he showed no remorse for it. He would also later be callous when a government official disintegrates from touch something in his lab, claiming he warned him. Rick reveals to Morty that the reason why he replaced himself with his robot clone was because in episode 9, Morty called him "boring" and chosen to take the sword from the Knights of the Sun.
Season 7[]
- Instead of giving Mr. Poopybutthole an intervention like he was supposed too, he makes things worse by inviting his old friends over, as well as celebrating and getting high, drunk and commuting various acts of mischief.
- He fed his family spaghetti that was harvested from the corpses of aliens after they commit suicide, turning his family into the cannibals. This would indirectly lead to the people becoming a popular product for other aliens to eat, almost resulting in the planet being ruined. While Rick may not have intended for this to happen, he did not show remorse. By the end of the episode, he has managed to acquire Salisbury Steak to feed his family in some awful way that he will not mention.
- He gives Morty multiple weapons one of them resulting in a boys death, the other one killing Morty causing Rick to bring Morty back and the last one shooting out serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer ° What’s made worse it’s heavily implied the resurrected Dahmer killed the robber who tried to rob Morty and Jessica.
- He killed his and Morty’s Space Jam counterparts and celebrates about it.
- He beat up three innocent people for no reason.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is played mostly for laughs, with a majority of his actions being played for dark comedy. While some of his actions like causing an Earth to be destroyed and leaving his family behind are taken seriously, most of them aren't and are far too preventing.
- He is genuinely tragic. His wife and daughter is killed in front of him by an sociopathic and alternate version of himself named Rick Prime just because he didn't want to become a "god" via dimensional travel, and after that Rick Prime proceeds to use Omega Device to wipe out infinite version of his wife Diane from every universe, which is what made him the nihilistic alcoholic he is and what made him so cruel in the first place. Even after killing Prime, he is still so mentally broken due to having lost his purpose. While this doesn't justify many of his actions, it still gives him sympathy, with characters like Morty even feeling sorry for him.
- He is overall a Grey Zone character, not caring for anything anyone says and does whatever he pleases, whether that be good or evil, and can do just as much good actions than bad, and as Morty and even Rick himself admits, he’s dead center at the alignment chart; in other words, "chaotic neutral."
- During season 6, Rick shows to become more and more healed over things, as he shows to be less villainous and more caring of his family, as well as doing unambiguously good deeds that Rick beforehand would never do, such as the episode Analyzing Piss, where after Pissmaster commits suicide from the humiliation to losing to Jerry, Rick assumes his identity to becomes a hero and have him have a noble death.
- Despite constantly putting them in danger and disrespecting them, he shows love for all of his family, including his deceased family:
- He showed to have been deeply broken from the death of his wife Diane and his deceased dimension daughter Beth. He was motivated by their death to dedicating decades of his life to find Rick Prime.
- He is shown to cherish Morty despite denying it, constantly protecting him from danger and gets angry when someone tries hurting or insulating him. Famously, in Meseeks and Destroy, he shows to be enraged over Morty being nearly assaulted by King Jellybean, to the point he lets his arrogance go and lets him win the bet, and proceeds to murder King Jellybean later as revenge.
- He was shown to love his alternate dimension of Beth and Space Beth, constantly being the most loving to them, and when Beth was starting to lose her self-worth, Rick suggests cloning as a way to ultimately help her find herself.
- He displays care for Summer, protecting her from the Gazorpazorps, sometimes taking her on vacations whenever she is upset or bored, and during one instance, took her across space to party to get her mind off of a break up.
- He even shows care for son-in-law, Jerry, despite being the most disrespectful to him, as he has times of showing care, such as taking him to a hotel to get his mind off of his and Beth’s divorce and later on when Jerry showed horror over a fortune cookie that foretold him having sex with his mother, Rick showed to want to help Jerry. Even after Rick gets angry over Jerry calling him a friend (accidentally fulfilling his fortune cookie and no longer making him immortal), and hits Jerry, he immediately apologizes to him for it once Jerry starts crying.
- With this, he’s capable of love, most notably towards the Hive Mind Unity, showing to have been genuinely in love with her and dismayed when they broke up due to their toxic nature.
- He had romantic feelings for Birdperson, upset when he spurned his romantic advances, was disgruntled (at first) when Birdperson was getting married, and flew into a rage when he was killed by Tammy.
- He shows care for his close friends including Birdperson, and Squanchy. He met Birdperson in his 30s, enjoyed his company and admitted he was one of the few things that mattered to him, wanting to team up with him and feeling hurt when he rejected. In the present, he invited him to his parties to help him get laid and would later begrudgingly but eventually open up to supporting him at his wedding.
- While he starts off as rather dismissive of Dr. Wong, trying to disprove her and stating he doesn’t respect her therapy, over time he grew fond of her. She even eventually becomes one of the few people he truly respects as a mentor and a friend.
- He always enjoys having his friend Mr. Poopybutthole around and even lets him live with his family when his life is ruined in Season 7 and tries to help stage an intervention for him.
- He rescues Jaguar from prison and ends up developing a friendship with him. Whilst he doesn't allow or inform him that he can skip Universes to be reunited with a version of his deceased daughter, he still avenges Jaguar's treatment by the facility.
- He cares for Slow Mobius and ends up being enraged by Rick Prime killing him.
- Exhibits many instances of standards throughout the series:
- Rick doesn't condone many of his alternate versions' crimes, even being horrified at the scale some of them go to.
- Shows disgust towards bestiality and any other forms of rape, showing anger and disgust when Tommy was having sexual relations with Froopyland creatures and showed to be uncomfortable when Old M Hucksbee wanted to get marry to the Lockerean due to it not being a sapient creature.
- In the episode "Look Who's Purging Now," although Rick brought Morty to the Purging Planet, he quickly became disgusted with the Purge and requested Morty to leave the planet quickly.
- Conversely, he was taken aback by the depths of Morty's psychotic rage when "purging."
- He was shown to visibly disturbed and horrified at the lengths he went to while he was blackout drunk last night for setting up a death trap for the Vindicators.
- Rick doesn't condone fascism in any form, even fighting some of his alternate selves who are fascists.
- He and Summer, after beating up Mr. Needful, also beats up several people who are either fascists, neo-Nazis, and in one instance, a homophobe.
- In the episode "One Crewcoos Over the Crewcoo's Morty," Rick was horrified after watching Miles's attendance literally tear him apart.
- In the episode "Claw and Hoarder: Special Ricktims: Morty," after learning the origins of the Talking Cat, Rick was horrified alongside Jerry, and despite Jerry's request, Rick removed his memories so they don't trouble him
- In the episode, "Final DeSmithination," he shows to not like when Summer and Morty insult Jerry over the fear of him fornicating with his mother.
- He is disgusted by the President trying to flirt on his therapist.
- In the episode “Promortyus,” him and Morty may go on a destructive rampage but when they see two towers, they stop and fly around them. Not to mention they sounded uncomfortable about doing a 9/11 attack and instead went for an attack similar to Pearl Harbor.
Trivia[]
- He and Tommy Lipnip are the only Rick and Morty characters to be Inconsistently Heinous, although a few others could likely qualify as well.
