I wanted to become a hero! That's why I always acted like everyone's big brother, too. I wanted people to respect me. That... that wasn't just history or my environment, it was my fault. Your mother was eaten by a Titan because of me!! I can't stand this anymore. Just kill me, I beg of you, I want to vanish.
~ Reiner expressing his remorse regarding his crimes to Eren Yeager.

Reiner Braun, also known as the Armored Titan, is the secondary antagonist of the Attack on Titan franchise. He is the arch-nemesis of Eren Yeager.

He is a soldier of the Marleyan military as a Warrior with Titan powers and the true identity of the Armored Titan, having infiltrated the military of the Walls as a spy, as part of a plot to eradicate the remainder of the Eldian kingdom on Paradis Island and a friend to Bertolt Hoover and Annie Leonhart, while serving as the Warrior Vice Captain under the War Chief, Zeke Yeager. He is a Marleyan on his father's side and an Eldian Marleyan on his mother's.

In the original Japanese version, he is voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya.

In the English dub, he is voiced by Robert McCollum who also voiced Fumito Nanahara in Blood-C.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • Assisted Marley's imperial and colonial policies invading enemy nations during his early Warrior years, helping to wipe out independent countries and have them annexed into Marley as a nation-continent.
  • He forces his friends, Annie and Bertholt to continue with their mission in Paradis Island and this makes him responsible for the breaking of Wall Maria, Paradis losing one-third of its territory and thousands of deaths, one of which is Eren’s mom (he even admits that Erens mother dying is his fault to Eren himself in chapter 100). This action also makes him indirectly responsible for the widespread starvation that caused the military to send 250,000 people on a suicide mission to solve the famine problem.
  • He then infiltrated the Walls as a refugee with his two friends, Annie and Bertholt, and planned to steal the Founding Titan for Marley.
  • Five years after the Fall of Wall Maria, he comes to the decision to destroy Wall Rose with Bertholt and Annie, which makes him responsible for all the deaths in the Battle of Trost District arc.
  • Because Marco (one of the other soldiers) accidentally overheard Reiner and Bertholt talking about their Titans, Reiner became paranoid that their cover would be destroyed. He pinned Marco to the ground and forced Annie to remove his ODM gear which caused him to be devoured by a titan.
  • He is the one who ordered Annie to transform into the Female Titan and break into the 57th Expedition of the Survey Corps, and during said expedition, he cut off the location of Eren into the Female Titan's hand, which makes him indirectly responsible for all the deaths of his comrades that were killed by Annie in her pursuit of Eren Yeager.
  • He kidnaps Eren and Ymir to deliver them to Marley while trying to persuade them to join his cause, and when that fails and he tries to get away, he throws Pure Titans at Eren in the hopes he would be eaten by them.
  • Kills a Survey Corps member that found him by impaling him with his sword while he and Bertholt were preparing an ambush.
  • Tried to kidnap Eren and wipe out the Survey Corps.
  • After the Paradis Island Operation, he participated in the Marley Mid-East War for 4 years, taking part in many battles against other nations with his comrades of the Marleyan military, being responsible for numerous brutal deaths as the Armored Titan. At least one civilian settlement is known to have been involved, as a partially damaged town below Fort Slava is seen during the end of the war. As a result of the war, many Mid-Eastern people lost their homes and were forced to leave their hometowns as refugees to live in tents within Marley's mainland territory, such as the camp of Ramzi's people, whom some members of the population curse as enemy invaders due to the war.
    • However, Reiner's actions are also countered by the fact that the opposing nations - the Mid-East Allied Forces - are the ones who declared war on Marley over personal grudges and a territorial dispute for a peninsula's sovereignity. Reiner (along with the rest of the military) was simply doing his job and duty as a soldier on the battlefield.
  • Though he has some minor comedic moments, such as getting flipped over by Annie during training, internally mentioning on wanting to marry Christa/Historia twice, sniffing Historia's letter in the epilogue. They are all very brief and don't detract his actions.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He’s genuinely tragic. His mother told him that they couldn't be with their father because they were Eldian, which motivated Reiner to become a Warrior despite the fact it would shorten his lifespan to only 13 years, because he only cared about reuniting his family and becoming a hero. When he became a Warrior, he found out that his father actually didn't want anything to do with him and his mother used him for revenge. Then, he discovered that his comrade Marcel was the only reason he was a Warrior in the first place and that he did it to protect his brother. Then, immediately after that revelation, Marcel sacrificed himself to save him from Ymir in pure Titan form. This event traumatized him so badly that he devolped a split personality based off Marcel. After finding out that the Eldians were not devils it caused his split personality to get even worse due to the guilt he felt.
  • He feels so guilty and remorseful for his past actions after the timeskip that at one point he even tries to take his own life. When he meets Eren, Reiner begs him to end his life for being the one responsible for the death of his mother.
  • His friendship with everyone on the island was genuine given that he sympathized with Eren’s struggles due to to his own experience and even had a crush on Christa and was remorseful about having to fight with them.
  • He genuinely cared for his comrades given that he was willingly to fight Zeke over saving Annie and encouraged Bertholt to confess his feelings for Annie. When Zeke left Bertholt to die, Reiner could be seen crying in the manga.
  • He cared about Falco and his cousin Gabi so much that they were the only reason he didn’t kill himself or give up. He was even willing to sacrifice his life so that Falco could become human again.
  • He repaired his relationship with all his friends on Paradis, helped save the world from the Rumbling and defeated the source of all Titans and became a peace ambassador for the Global Alliance sent to Paradis in the epilogue, ultimately redeeming himself in the process.
