Pride, also known as Pride the Arrogant, is a major antagonist of the manga series Fullmetal Alchemist, and its anime adaption Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.

He is the oldest of the Homunculi created by Father, and arguably, the most sadistic, being the embodiment of Father's pride. Throughout the series he disguises himself as Selim Bradley, the son of Fuhrer King Bradley, who is secretly Pride's youngest brother Wrath.

He was voiced by Yuko Sanpei in the Japanese version of the anime, and by Brittney Karbowski in the English version.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • For centuries throughout the development of Amestris, he would take on the role of the son of a high-ranking diplomat in the government, likely feeding information back to Father while he prepares the country for its transmutation ritual.
  • He is responsible for watching over the nationwide transmutation circle as Sloth constructs it, killing anyone who uncovers the circle accidentally. We see this occur when he slaughters a handful of Briggs soldiers who come across it.
  • After Riza Hawkeye uncovers his identity, he threatens to kill her and everyone she cares about if she passes the secret on.
  • He orders Solf J. Kimblee to cause a mass killing in Briggs to carve the final blood crest for the nationwide transmutation circle. When Kimblee comments on how that may be difficult given the strength of Briggs, he gives Kimblee the idea of manipulating an army of Drachma into being eliminated by having them foolishly believe they could win.
  • He attempts to kill Von Hohemheim when Hohenheim investigates the circle.
  • He kidnaps Alphonse Elric and intends to use him as a hostage in luring out his brother, Edward, leading to them fighting.
  • He eats his own brother, Gluttony, as a means of increasing his power and gaining Gluttony's sense of smell.
  • Using Morse code, he instructs Kimblee to free him and the two fight Alphonse and Heinkel. When Kimblee is mortally wounded in the battle, Pride consumes him, leaving him to live amongst the agonizing souls in his Philosopher's Stone.
  • He forces Roy Mustang to perform Human Transmutation as a means of having him as a candidate for Human Sacrifice after Father's nationwide transmutation ritual of his genocide of Amestris's citizens. This also leads to Mustang losing his sight.
  • He attempts to kill Edward Elric and steal his body when his own starts deteriorating as punishment by the Gates of Truth, despite claiming humans meant nothing to him as a Homunculus. This was so dishonorable that even Kimblee was disgusted and sacrificed himself to save Edward as a result.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • There are several individuals he cares about.
    • He genuinely loves his mother, Mrs. Bradley, as he admitted to Alphonse that he quite liked her and recounted a time she threw herself in the way of a moving vehicle that was close to hitting him, with him being moved by the gesture despite knowing he was in no danger. When he believed his death was approaching, he saw flashes of his mother, and after reverting to his original form, he started crying for her company.
    • He is unquestionably loyal to Father to the point that he was willing to be punished by the Gates of Truth as a means of assisting him with his goals and was disgusted by Greed's lack of loyalty.
    • Despite his care for most of the other Homunculi being nonexistent, he does care somewhat about his youngest brother, Wrath, as proven when he chose not to report Wrath's potentially treacherous opinions on humans to Father. He also saw visions of Wrath alongside Mrs. Bradley when he believed he was going to die.
  • While his final defeat is quite pathetic, it is also played for sympathy, as he was forced to confront the fact that Father never cared about him when seeing his lack of concern for his well-being after Pride was punished by the Gates of Truth. Following this, he is left believing he is going to die and, as his Philosopher's Stone is destroyed, he reverts to his real form, a crying, defenseless, fetus-like creature, begging for his mother's help.
  • After the destruction of his Philosopher's Stone, he becomes a normal, kind-hearted boy who lives with Mrs. Bradley, as shown when he saves an injured bird. While this isn't a redemption since it only occurred because Edward destroyed his Philosopher's Stone, leaving him unaware of his previous villainy, it is ultimately too prevalent a reformation for him to be Near Pure Evil, as he doesn't change into a different character; he merely embraces redeeming qualities that he already had beforehand. His fate is also treated as an uplifting moment, with Mrs. Bradley being happy that her son had reformed into such a kind boy, and General Grumman being hopeful at seeing humans and Homunculi coexisting peacefully.

Trivia[]

  • 2003 anime version of Pride can't qualify as he completely lacks any redeeming qualities and is completely different character being identity of King Bradley.
    • Selim can't qualify either he's an ordinary human child and isn't a villain.
