Justin Peter Löwenbräu Griffin Sr. known better as just Peter Griffin is the main protagonist of Fox's Family Guy franchise. He is the husband of Lois Griffin, the father of Chris Griffin, Meg Griffin and Stewie Griffin, and the friend/owner of Brian Griffin. Even though he is technically a protagonist, he is often shown to have a dark side, committing many villainous acts throughout the series due to his incompetence. As such, he can be seen as a villainous protagonist in many episodes.
He is voiced by series creator Seth MacFarlane, who also voices Glenn Quagmire, Carter Pewterschmidt (alongside his Emperor counterpart), Darth Stewie and Adolf Hitler in the same series, as well as Stan Smith and Roger Smith in American Dad!.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General[]
- He has a habit of causing chaos and countless deaths, due to his incompetence and then downplaying his actions and/or trying to shift the blame onto others.
- He is shown attacking his friends when he is unprovoked and often enjoys attacking his friends, due to him being prone to violent outbursts that doesn’t get in his way.
- He consistently assaults and belittles his own daughter, Meg. His abuse of Meg includes psychological abuse, to physical assault, and at one point in a cutaway scene he tries to kill Meg by shooting her with a pistol for simply saying "hi" to him.
- He also has a nasty habit of neglecting and abusing his wife and other children, often showing no remorse for his actions and trying to cover up his horrendous treatment of them to escape punishment.
- He happens to be homophobic and racist, as shown numerous times throughout the series. What makes this worse is that his friend Cleveland is African American and Peter has even ripped on him for this a few times.
- He is perfectly willing to murder, assault, maim, or torture others if it benefits him, and happily throwing his friends and family under the bus to get even the slightest advantage.
- He even rode his car to run over a bunch of marathon runners while stating it was intentional when he saw someone in his way.
- While it is shown on occasion that he had a backstory where he was bullied and abused in his childhood, these tragedies become irrelevant to his present behavior and too petty to justify a large portion of his actions, all of which had pretty much nothing to do with his past suffering in any way whatsoever as well.
- While he does often get called out on his heinous actions, he is almost never punished for them, making him a massive Karma Houdini.
- Furthermore, while he may seem like a scapegoat at times, such as when Chris beats him to a pulp, Meg beat him up after coming home from prison or whenever Carter mistreats him, they are easily outweighed by the numerous times he got away with his heinous acts. Therefore, he absolutely deserves it for the many different types of crimes he committed throughout the show. This is something even Lois has acknowledged, most notably in "A Shot in the Dark" where she beat Peter for trying to wear blackface and loudly reprimanded him for doing his heinous actions on purpose.
- Despite Family Guy's astronomical heinous standards: with Bertram attempted omnicide; Penelope and Stewie contributed to causing a war between multiple countries; Adolf Hitler started World War 2 and the Holocaust; George W. Bush starting a civil war which had 17 million people killed; and Carter indirectly letting millions die from cancer, Peter has much less resources than all of them and still has more than enough unique crimes to stand out from them.
- Although clearly suffering from an abnormally low IQ of around 70, he is occasionally still intelligent enough in few cases to understand the weight of each heinous deed done by him or someone else and has a clear sense of right and wrong, meaning he chooses to do things that he knows hurt people.
- Even if he didn't, Peter still displays sadism and revelry in violence.
- While it may seem like he has a few standards, such as in "Meg and Quagmire" where he draws the line at Quagmire trying to seduce his own daughter, Meg, in "Welcome Back, Carter", where he is appalled when he catches Carter having an affair with his mistress and becomes disgusted when Carter throws multiple lies as an excuse or when Meg reveals she does something very vulgar and horrible that Peter almost bursted into tears, this is pure hypocrisy as proven when he commits many vulgar actions himself, including owning child pornography, attempting to have sex with Meg in "Airport '07" and attempting to cheat on Lois on several occasions, often successfully.
Specific Episodes[]
- In "The Courtship of Stewie's Father", he and Stewie go on a rampage abusing Lois. They smash a jar of pickles on her head, assault her with a spraying garden hose, and lock her in the back of the trunk of their car, and push the car into a body of water, nearly drowning her. He did this in order to try to bond with Stewie who enjoys seeing Lois in pain and it’s only later that Peter grows a conscience and wonders about her safety.
- He is shown brutally assaulting people who vex him, such as smashing Connie D'Amico's face into a fire extinguisher cabinet and beating up a teenager in a cutaway scene after letting the teenager's guard down.
- In "The Tan Aquatic with Steve Zissou", he also beat up Kyle and nearly killed him when the kid insulted him. However, he only assaulted Kyle and Connie because they were bullying Chris and Meg respectively.
- In "Hot Shots", he and Lois go against Brian’s advice and decide not to vaccinate Stewie. The two become fervent anti-vaxxers, but Lois eventually changes her mind when Stewie becomes sick. Peter, on the other hand, remains firm in his belief - so much so that he eradicates the city's stash of vaccines when he becomes a male nurse in a manner similar to Heath Ledger's Joker and completely decimates the hospital with a series of explosions. Not only does he wipe out all the vaccines, but he presumably kills a large number of people in the blast.
- In "Back to the Pilot", when Stewie asks who wants to cause 9/11, he raises his hand without knowing the full context.
- In "Peter Problems", he accidentally pierced a beached whale and kept wiggling it till its insides fell out.
- In "He's Bla-ack!", he got Cleveland addicted to drugs and almost killed the both of them by doing 10 rounds of chemotherapy.
- In that exact same episode, he assaulted Cleveland and expressed great sadism in doing it.
- Yet again in that same episode, he deliberately gets him and Cleveland into a car wreck and shows no remorse over Cleveland being grievously injured due to not having an air bag on his side of the car.
- Still in that very same episode, one of his plans to have Lois and Donna reconcile was to put a collection of images featuring naked babies in suggestive situations on display. Cleveland, horrified by this, points out that Peter's collection is timestamped far before the plan and says he'll have to call the police on him. In response, Peter sobs and admits he needs help. This is basically one of several moments where Peter is proven to be a pedophile.
- In "Turban Cowboy", he befriends a man named Mahmoud, who is revealed to be a terrorist targeting the Quahog Bridge. Peter gets roped into Mahmoud’s organization and is forced to drive the van that is loaded with explosives. While he successfully works with Joe to apprehend Mahmoud, the plan is nevertheless executed when Peter inadvertently detonates the explosives with his cell phone. While the crime itself was an accident he still showed no remorse over it.
- Additionally in the same episode, Peter reveals in a cutaway gag that he won a marathon. The scene cuts to a large group of runners with Peter driving through the crowd and crossing the finish line in his car.
- In "Brian's Got a Brand New Bag", he kicked multiple people after watching Road House. He also beat up Lucy Van Pelt just for teasing Charlie Brown with a football, though some people argue that she deserved it and he did so out of care for Charlie Brown.
- In "Petey IV", when he worked at the Suicide Hotline, he encouraged a suicidal man to kill his cheating wife instead of himself.
- In "American Gigg-olo", he became a pimp and started sexually abusing Quagmire.
- In "Big Man on Hippocampus", when he played Grand Theft Auto, he started acting out the characters' actions by beating a prostitute to death with a baseball bat, stealing her money, and carjacking someone.
- In "Tales of a Third Grade Nothing", he accidentally blew up a children's hospital while attempting to blow up a billboard to impress his manager, which led to 19 children dying.
- While he was shocked when the hospital was on fire, when the fire spread to the billboard he intended to blow up, Peter no longer expressed any concern for the burning hospital.
- Additionally, when he passed the third grade and was eligible so he could use the executive bathroom Angela refused to give it to him. Her reason was that nobody had forgotten the burning of the hospital which resulted in over nineteen child deaths. The FBI learned it was Peter, but he was sentenced to only a week in prison presumably to the outrage of the dead children's families.
- He has engaged in dangerous and destructive fights with Ernie the Giant Chicken, ever since their rivalry started when Peter assaulted Ernie over unknowingly giving him an expired coupon in "Da Boom"; after the first chicken fight, he also got into more chicken fights after being taken by surprise by Ernie in "Blind Ambition" and "No Chris Left Behind", accidentally backing into his car in "Internal Affairs", and again by accidentally knocking him off of his bike in "Yug Ylimaf". Each of their fights ended up causing massive chaos around the entire environment of Quahog by destroying many places and properties they went and leaving countless citizens killed in the process, while he and Ernie survive.
- While he did save Ernie's life while working as a nurse in "Fecal Matters", it was partly for pragmatic reasons as Peter would have solely been held accountable for the massive destruction and countless casualties their fights caused.
- Early in the same episode, he refuses to help Ernie, due to their destructive past brawls.
- In a crossover with The Simpsons called "The Simpsons Guy", he got engaged in a similarly long and violent brawl with Homer Simpson that similarly demolished a lot of properties and locations around Springfield and ended up killing or injuring many of its citizens.
- Peter also hypocritically called out Homer for strangling Bart, even though he does much worse actions to his family.
- To add to that, both of them were equally at fault for starting the brawl, although it can also be argued that Homer clearly started this violent brawl by attacking Peter, who mocked him that his show sucked. Thankfully, the two apologized to each other for their destructive brawl and become friends.
- He would later start up another destructive brawl with President Donald Trump in "Trump Guy", where they accidentally released missiles, interrupting a press conference, and damaging some landmarks in Washington D.C. and both the Wright Brothers' plane and The Spirit of St. Louis from the Smithsonian Institution; although in Peter’s defense, he only fought President Trump for his inappropriate behavior towards Meg following his unsuccessful attempt to rape Meg and during the battle, Peter put the portrait of President Barack Obama back after Trump tried to demolish it, even kissing it.
- While he did save Ernie's life while working as a nurse in "Fecal Matters", it was partly for pragmatic reasons as Peter would have solely been held accountable for the massive destruction and countless casualties their fights caused.
- On multiple instances, he is shown to be a deviant.
- In "Airport '07", when he became a redneck, he wanted to have sex with his underage daughter and her friends.
- He also tried to marry Chris for his inheritance.
- He is also a pedophile as he boasted to Lois about being able to "get" any of the preschool girls he is around while running a kid's TV show.
- In the infamous “Brian is a Bad Father” he shoots Quagmire without remorse and doesn’t feel any regret about it. Then when he tells Quagmire to shoot him in the arm, he tries to cowardly weasel out of it by saying it would be like in a movie before Joe and Quagmire shoot him.
- In "The 2000-Year-Old Virgin" he was caught watching child pornography. When questioned by Joe how young the girls look, he destroyed the evidence by throwing his laptop into the ocean.
- In "420", Quagmire begins spending more time with his new pet cat than his friends, prompting a jealous Peter to perform a prank on the poor feline. He brings along a straight razor and attempts to shave the cat only to accidentally kill it. Even worse, Peter continues to inflict hideous damage on the cat, falsely believing that it has nine lives.
- When he became really skinny, he acted as Slender Man and goaded children to kill each other, while also telling teenagers to kill themselves and brushing all of it off as a joke.
- In "Connie's Celica" he brutally rips the people's faces off as their skulls got entirely exposed, which is far too gruesome.
- In "You Can't Do That On Television, Peter", he spitefully created a character called Saggy Naggy using Lois' face for the sole purpose of slandering her and showed no remorse after Lois told him that it got her assaulted by a group of kids, with one of those kids even being Stewie.
- In "Baby, It's Cold Inside", he abandoned Lois behind during what was thought to be a shark attack, only for the shark to be revealed to be a dolphin. After she made it to shore, Peter humiliated her by taking a picture of her naked and washed ashore and posting it on Instagram.
- In "Brian the Closer", Brian rediscovers his old rope toy, but Peter wants it for himself. He later ties the toy to a rope and attaches it to the hitch of his car. As he drives, Brian refuses to let go of his toy. Chaos ensues as Peter makes 5 sharp turns, causing Brian to crash into 5 garbage cans. The situation worsens as Peter drifts his car to the left, causing Brian to lose his grip on the toy. Brian is then sent flying until he crashes face first into a fire hydrant, losing all of his teeth. Brian also told Peter to go to hell.
- In "The Juice Is Loose", it was revealed that he had another kid named Peter Griffin Jr, but he shook him to death so he would stop crying. This was more of a misdeed since Peter did not mean it.
- In "Lois Comes Out of Her Shell", Lois is feeling upset about getting older, but her spirits are lifted when she finds a surprise party waiting at home. Unfortunately, it’s short-lived when Peter, in his speech, criticizes her aging body and says some other rather terrible things like referring to her as a plow horse, whose only use is menial labor and sex, only to top it off with a very confusing “I love you, sweetheart.” all of which sends Lois on a mid-life crisis.
- In "E. Peterbus Unum", Peter discovers that his property doesn’t technically belong to the United States while trying to have a pool installed. Rather than getting this fixed, Peter founds his own independent land, known as Petoria. Even worse, he commits treason and declares war on America by invading Joe’s property and stealing his pool. Along the way, Peter befriends some notable dictator's hostile to the United States and has them all over for a barbecue. As Peter is so prone to doing, he gleefully allows the power to get to his head and becomes incredibly unlikable in the process. Peter’s rebellion doesn’t last long though as in the end, his power trip is squashed when the U.S. military comes knocking and retakes Petoria and the conquered land.
- In "If I'm Dyin', I'm Lyin", Peter’s favorite sitcom gets canceled, so he decides to con the Grant-A-Dream Foundation. He claims that Chris is deathly sick with an incurable disease in order to get his favorite TV show back on the air, but when the jig is nearly exposed, he then claims that he miraculously "healed" him. When his neighbors start praising him like a God after the supposed miracle, Peter revels in the attention and basks in his newfound reputation as a God-like figure. Of course, this only incurs the wrath of the real God, and he sends down various plagues against the Griffin family. Despite everyone demanding he tell the truth, Peter refuses to, until Chris almost dies for real.
- In "Family Gay", Peter buys a horse named "Til Death" at a Kentucky auction and enters him into the Quahog Derby. Unfortunately, the horse proceeds to harm a number of bystanders, then later dies of a heart attack. Peter disposes of the body by using his car and having it delivered directly to Mort's pharmacy counter, causing serious damage to the store and the body in the process.
- In "Farmer Guy", When crime rises in Quahog, Peter uproots his entire family with no warning and moves them to a farm to live the rural life. But life on the farm is not as easy as it seems, and they begin experiencing financial difficulties. Much to Peter’s delight, however, the family discovers a meth lab in the basement of the farmhouse while taking shelter from a tornado. Peter then convinces his family to begin producing methamphetamine to make money. Of course, this new enterprise only worsens Quahog’s crime problem. Of course, eventually, the Griffins give up the drug life and move back to Quahog, but things get a lot worse before they get better.
- In "Welcome Back, Carter", Peter finds his father-in-law, Carter Pewterschmidt having an affair and, while he initially agrees to stay quiet, he eventually blackmails Carter into submission. He uses his newfound power to enjoy the finer things in life, like a limousine joust that nearly gets them killed. Even worse, the blackmail was all for nothing, as Peter accidentally reveals the truth anyway, causing Barbara to be devastated.
- In “Perfect Castaway,” Peter and his friends are fishing when they encounter a hurricane and are left stranded on the open sea. They are initially kept alive on a raft made of inflatable dolls. The guys find that Peter has been secretly eating food, only to discover that this “food” is Joe's Legs.
- In "Dial Meg for Murder", Peter learns of an upcoming rodeo competition. He decides to enter and practices his cowboy skills on Meg. In one rather shocking sequence, he lassos Meg while she’s laying in bed, violently drags her down the stairs, and takes her outside before attempting to brand her.
- In “Meg Stinks!”, Peter proudly walks into the branch to show Meg how he pays for his “shenanigans.” He then whips out an assault rifle and robs the joint. After Meg accidentally kills the manager, Peter told her to kill everyone else.
- In “Vestigial Peter”, Peter suddenly discovers that he has a vestigial twin named Chip. Though they initially are the best of friends, they eventually get detached, and the family likes Chip better than Peter, so Peter decides he doesn’t like him anymore. Naturally, the only way Peter sees to settle this problem is to have Chip eaten by a dingo. Unfortunately for Stewie, the dingo decides he’d rather eat him instead. Stewie gets munched and dragged out of the house by the dingo. Peter doesn’t seem to care, and it’s not even mentioned again.
- In "And the Weiner is...", Peter decides to store Stewie in his pants as a way of overcompensating in an area where he feels lacking. Lois doesn’t even notice Stewie is missing until she sees him moving around in there.
- In "Petarded", When Peter is deemed mentally challenged, he takes full advantage of the situation by starting a Bible fight in church, barging into women's bathrooms, and causing trouble wherever he goes while blaming it on being mentally challenged. His worst offense is when he jumps behind the counter at a fast-food restaurant and accidentally pours hot grease all over Lois, nearly killing her.
- In “Sibling Rivalry”, he ruthlessly insults Lois for gaining weight at least until he discovers the wonders of fat sex. Then he encourages her to gain weight, which is even worse than him putting her down. He insists she get fatter and literally stuffs her face with cake. She gains so much weight that she has a heart attack and almost dies. But that does not stop Peter from having sex with her.
- In "Family Goy", After finding out that Lois is Jewish, Peter tries to shoot her, after seeing the ghost of his deceased stepfather, Francis Griffin, warning him that he will go to hell for not being Catholic. As Lois is walking out to the mailbox to get the mail, Peter watches her through the scope of a rifle and takes a shot at her. Lois, freaks out, as you might expect, but Peter is so nonchalant about the whole thing. So he’s not only guilty of attempted murder of his own wife, but also an anti-semitic hate crime.
- In "Peternormal Activity", he, Quagmire, Cleveland, and Joe beat a Korean war veteran (who is actually an imposter) named Albert to death after thinking he was a ghost with a hook hand. They try to cover it up by burying his body and his car. In a bizarre move, they also vandalize the car by striking it repeatedly with shovels to “kill” it. Back at home, each time he thought Lois suspected him of what he did that night, Peter was preparing to stab and kill her with a knife to keep his act secret safe. Later on close to the end of the episode, the man is revealed to be a KKK leader and a veteran imposter so his death is pretty much well-deserved.
- In "The Thin White Line" he shows sadistic tendencies wanting to catch the deaf boy united for fun.
- In "Fast Times at Buddy Clanci, Jr. High" he has another moment of saddistic violence by throwing objects at other men for fun.
- In "Patriot Games" he physically abuse his colleagues while working for the England Patriots for fun
- In "Peter's Sister", after Meg hit his sister Karen in the head with a real chair instead of a prop one leaving her in a coma, Peter didn't seem concerned on how Karen ended, and more so when the doctors call him urgently that Karen needs a blood transfusion, Peter just answers that he doesn't think that he has the same blood type and refuses to check if he has, leaving his sister to die. However, it's really hard to feel bad for Karen, considering her constant bullying and abuse on Peter and she being one of the reasons why Peter became the man he is.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- As is the case with most other characters in Family Guy, his crimes are not treated seriously at all by the show's narrative and are played for dark comedy.
- He is On & Off, as he commits some heroic deeds for genuinely altruistic reasons, like saving the Evil Monkey from Miley Cyrus, saving Joe from committing suicide, saving Horace from a burning building, (Although he didn’t know it was on fire) saving Cleveland and his friends from rednecks, and saving his family from a holographic clone of himself.
- He also shows remorse for his actions at times and tries his best to fix his mistakes on several occasions.
- While he hates Ernie the Giant Chicken, he still has some respect for him as he saves his life and admits how much he enjoys having him as an enemy. Although this is a minor prevention since he also saved him so he wouldn’t be held accountable for all the damage they caused, making the decision both emotional and financial.
- While much less apparent in the present and despite constantly abusing them, there are still moments where he ceases his abuse and genuinely tries to be a supportive husband, father, and friend.
- He also sometimes cares for Brian, such as when he thought a mirror hurt Brian and was deeply saddened when Brian got killed.
- Additionally, he wasn't that bad in the first three seasons, as he lacked his heinous traits and was a lot more affable, such as his care for Meg being more prominent. If the show had ended after three seasons as FOX originally intended, he likely wouldn't even be considered villainous, let alone Inconsistently Heinous.
