NOTE: This article only applies to Paper Mario's actions in the non-canon endings of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Super Paper Mario.

What?! How can you refuse? If you do not accept this, all worlds will end! You must!
~ Merlon warning Paper Mario that refusing to take the first Pure Heart will destroy all worlds.
Mario! Who do you trust, Dimentio or me? I won't warn you again. If you say 'yes' once more, I will not be able to save you. You'll be that psychopath's partner, for better or worse!
~ Tippi trying to stop Mario from teaming up with Dimentio, and warning him that doing so could have bad consequences.

Paper Mario is the titular main protagonist of Nintendo's video game series of the same name.

He is the 'Paperverse' counterpart of the mainstream version of Mario, coming from a book that holds said universe. Though typically a heroic character, throughout the franchise, particularly in Paper Mario 64, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Super Paper Mario, the player is giving the option to commit various cruel deeds and atrocities.

He is voiced by Charles Martinet.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • In the first three games in the Paper Mario series, it is possible to hit Whackas, harmless creatures, in exchange for their bumps that can heal Paper Mario.
    • What makes matters worse is that multiple characters in the games imply that they are an endangered species, with Wonky claiming that there is only one left in the world, and Goombella telling Mario that they should not be whacked.
    • Additionally, in Super Paper Mario, Mario attacking Whacka and making it disappear reveals that it was friends with a Cragnon named Norite, whose "heart is about to burst" according to Tippi, upon discovering that the Whacka is gone.
  • In Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, it is possible to join the Shadow Queen as one of her servants upon being asked by her. If the player does this, it leads to a Game Over where the entire world is stated to have been destroyed offscreen.
    • To make matters worse, this comes after Mario learns of the Shadow Queen's backstory and maliciousness.
  • In Super Paper Mario there are several points where the player can cause a non-standard Game Over by opting to do immoral deeds and/or refuse to take the necessary steps to stop them, such as:
    • The beginning of the game, where Mario can refuse to take the first Pure Heart to stop Count Bleck from destroying the universe.
      • The player is even warned by Merlon of the consequences of refusing this, and that the universe could come to an end if Mario refuses to take it.
    • Near the end of the game, where the player can accept to join forces with Dimentio to Count Bleck, which causes Dimentio to brainwash him and Luigi.
      • Although Dimentio was tricking Mario, both Luigi and Tippi try to warn the latter that the former is tricking him.
  • It is also possible to commit various acts of petty cruelty and bullying in the games, including but not limited to:
    • Threatening to eat a scared Punio upon being introduced to him.
    • Suggesting to steal Rawk Hawk's belt rather than attempting to obtain it legitimately.
    • Threatening to eat the Yoshi Kid whilst he is still in an egg.
  • Although the series has a very high heinous standards, Paper Mario manages to just stand out, as allowing all worlds to be destroyed even when he is given the resources and chances to stop it is a unique feat, not to mention that he also does not have the resources to commit omnicide like Dimentio and Count Bleck.
  • While some of his immoral choices are shown to be comedic, that is only applied when it's about standard mischief. His worst immoral acts of global to even multiversal endangerment are played dead seriously by the narrative.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • Any immoral act he can do is player dependant and ultimately non-canon. His worst acts are especially Non-Standard Game Overs that are only meant as jokes rather than actual story progression.
  • He performs various heroic deeds and acts of kindness throughout the games. While taking the choices of leaving the universe get destroyed or side with the villains can make him hypocritical, none of these choices explicitely subvert any of his redeeming qualities.
    • He spends a majority of his screentime being a hero who commits himself to protecting the world from dangerous threats, and, even when taking the non-canon endings into account, manages to defeat several villains such as Paper Bowser, Hooktail, Lord Crump, Grubba and the Smorgs, all of whom were threatening innocent individuals with their schemes.
    • He cares for and is typically affable to his brother Luigi, his partners and most of the game's supporting characters, as he was happy to help them with their problems and let them join him on his quest. He even went out of his way to help and stand up for Vivian after the two defeated Doopliss, showing that he is willing to help others even when it's not part of his main goal.
    • Even when taking the non-canon endings into account, he still shows standards against several of the villains he goes up against.

Trivia[]
