~ Odin's final words to Thor and Loki. |
King Odin Borson, also known as the Allfather, is the overarching protagonist of the Thor quadrilogy of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He is the king of Asgard and protector of the Nine Realms, succeeding his father Bor after his death in the battlefield.
Though originally a mighty conqueror alongside his daughter Hela Odinsdottir, Odin would come to appreciate peace and decided to banish Hela from invading the entire universe. Becoming a benevolent ruler, Odin would marry Frigga and have a son named Thor Odinson, but also become the adoptive father of Loki Laufeyson.
In the films, he was portrayed by Anthony Hopkins, who also played Hannibal Lecter in three Hannibal Lecter film adaptations.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General[]
- He negatively impacted his children's lives by being a horrible father to them, even causing Loki's descend to villainy that led him to work for Thanos and bring the Chitauri invasion to New York, making Odin the catalyst for the events of The Avengers.
- Additionally, him raising Hela to be the bloothirsty tyrant she is brought forward the events of Thor: Ragnarok, with Hela finally escaping her banishment and taking over Asgard after his death, resulting in the fulfillment of the prophecy Ragnarok since Thor had no choice but to let Surtur destroy Asgard to kill Hela.
- Despite not being a villain, he passes the MCU's heinous standards through his countless massacres during his past as a tyrant as well as the impact he had on the Thor trilogy.
Background[]
- Along with Hela, Odin led invasions to subjugate the Nine Realms, causing mass murderers in multiple planets and stealing their gold to make his kingdom with Hela as his executioner.
- While this was done offscreen, it still has onscreen evidence and impact through Hela's demeanor and the mural shown in the third Thor film.
- Banishes Hela in a harsh prison when she wanted more realms to conquer. While nothing excuses what Hela has done or trying to do, Odin did raise her into what she was.
- Made a fake history of Asgard to cover up his many crimes with Hela.
Thor[]
- Sends his heir Thor Odinson to Earth as punishment for restarting Asgard's war against the Frost Giants so Thor can learn some humility and making sure the Mjölnir could only be raised by someone worthy so Thor couldn't leave the Earth until he learned his lesson. Though this was the best for Thor, it was absolutely hypocritical on Odin's part to call him out for instigating conflicts as he did the same thing centuries ago.
Thor: The Dark World[]
- After Loki is brought back to Asgard in chains, Odin mentions that he is still alive because Frigga wants it so and eternally sentences him to the dungeons instead (even though he got the better deal than Hela).
- Initially outcasts Jane Foster because she isn't Asgardian in Asgard healthcare until she reveals to have the Aether flowing through her body.
- When his wife Frigga died, he swore revenge on the Malekith the Accursed and his Dark Elves no matter the cost, even if it cost all the Asgardian lives. Even Thor was skeptical of this comparing him to Malekith.
Thor: Ragnarok[]
- After being put under a spell by Loki and put in exile on Earth, he broke out of it but remained in exile on Earth while Loki ruled an unprotected Asgard under his guise for years.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- After seeing the error in his ways of conquering the Nine Realms he redeems himself and stops it, while Hela wanted more, looking for a new path for Asgard as a benevolent king.
- He loves his wife Frigga as her death is what motivated him to make the Dark Elves pay.
- He loves both his sons Thor and Loki.
- In spite of caging her, he loved his daughter Hela so that when her ambition and bloodthirstiness outweighed Odin's, he locked her up instead of killing her, only after failing to make her see reason.
- He cares for his Empire Asgard.
- He values his worshippers in Nordic countries entrusting them with the Tesseract.
- His death is played for sympathy.
Trivia[]
- Odin Borson is one of four MCU Inconsistently Heinous characters to be a hero along with Scarlet Witch, Deadpool, and Strange Supreme. He's also the only one of them not to have a Villains wiki article.
- His What If...? version does not count as IH due to all of his heinous acts being off-screen.
