King Obould I Many-Arrows is a major antagonist of The Legend of Drizzt, serving as the main antagonist of the Hunter's Blades trilogy, the titular tritagonist of the Orc King, and a minor character in The Pirate King. He was an incredibly intelligent and strong orc king, who started a brutal and bloody war with the kingdoms near his stronghold, particularly the dwarf kingdom of Mithral Hall, the human city of Nesme, and later the powerful Silverymoon. However, over the course of the war he began show that his goal wasn't power or bloodlust, but the desire to change his people for the better and help them advance out of their chaotic and destructive ways by conquering a land to make a functioning kingdom in.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- He formed an alliance with the frost giant queen Gerti Orelsdottr and troll king Proffit and launched a war against the other kingdoms in the area. This war went on for many years, and cost hundreds of thousands of innocent lives, including children and infants, as well as destroying innumerable homes.
- To start the war, he ordered any town near the Spine of the World destroyed, having his troops burn them to the ground and murder all of the inhabitants. He did this to dozens of towns, and almost nobody made it out, including children.
- Obould personally participated in several of these raids.
- He was responsible for Proffit the troll completely destroying the city of Nesme, killing most of its inhabitants and forcing the rest to be refuges.
- He attacked Mithral Hall, where all of the refuges from his previous raid were living and planned to wipe it out.
- When this failed, he sieged the city for many months.
- He was indirectly responsible for the ruthless clan Karuck going to war against Mithral Hall and later his own people.
- He murdered Tarathiel the elf by cutting him in half.
- Afterwards, he took Tarathiel's pegasus and beat it until it let him ride it.
- He killed Shoudra Stargleam by grabbing her by the throat and cutting her in half.
- He was shown to be very xenophobic towards his enemies and insulted them on many occasions:
- He called Aulustriel a "b***ch", marking one of the few times anyone actually swore in this series.
- He hated dwarves with a passion and very much wanted to wipe them out.
- He was shown to be somewhat sadistic and enjoyed crushing his enemies and killing them brutally in battle.
- He was consistently cruel to his allies:
- He frequently threatened and beat his son Urlgen.
- He was cold and occasionally abusive toward his lover and advisor.
- He went out of his way to belittle frost giant queen Gerti, constantly proving that he was stronger and smarter than she was and eventually having her completely under his thumb. However, this was partially justified because she wanted to control him.
- He bit his drow advisor Kaer'lic's throat out. However, this was partially justified because she had just confessed to trying to kill him.
Why Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He is too much of an extremist to count for Pure Evil or Near Pure Evil. He understood that the world would be a better place if the orcs formed their own kingdom and stopped their constant war against every other race. Although he hated the dwarves, everything he did was to get enough land to finally have peace because that would be best for everyone. He was even willing to put his own prejudices aside to further this goal. By the end of his life, he had created the kingdom of Many-Arrows, which became a major power in the north and a symbol of cooperation between the dwarves and the orcs.
- He redeemed himself in a way, eventually making peace with the dwarves, with both Drizzt and Bruenor deciding to forgive him, or at least give up trying to kill him. Obould spent the rest of him life working to maintain the peace between his people and the dwarves, even allying with them on some occasions.
- He cared about his people, and everything he did was to make life better for them.
- Despite threatening and abusing him, he did care about his son Urlgen, and was genuinely sad to discover that he had died.
- He is honorable, and prefers to fight his enemies fairly, as well as generally staying true to his promises.
