~ The only words that Night King said when he was a human right before being turned into the white walker by Children of the Forest.
The True Enemy won't wait out the storm. He brings the storm.
~ Jon Snow, regarding the Night King.

The Night King is the overarching antagonist of the HBO TV series Game of Thrones, an adaptation of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novel series.

Having existed since the Age of the First Men, the Night King was the leader of the White Walkers, being the first and most dangerous of his kind. By extension he was also master of the wights.

Because he is an original character of the television series, he is not expected to appear in the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. In the TV series adaptation, he is the apparent mastermind behind the coming invasion of the White Walkers and the wights, and as such, he is the most dangerous threat to the Seven Kingdoms. He is also the archenemy of both Jon Snow, Bran Stark, and House Stark as a whole.

The religion of R'hllor claims that the Night King and the White Walkers are servants of an evil god of ice known as the Great Other, the archenemy of R'hllor, the Lord of Light. The Red Priests claim that only the hero Azor Ahai reborn can stop them and the Long Night that Never Ends. It is revealed that the Children of the Forest, during their war with the First Men, created the Night King as the first and original White Walker to defeat their enemies. The Night King himself was one of the First Men.

In Seasons 4 to 5, he was portrayed by Richard Brake, who also portrayed Joe Chill in Batman Begins. In Seasons 6 to 8, he was portrayed by Vladimir Furdik.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • Although it has not been confirmed, he may have been one of the first men to wage war against the Children of the Forest, killing them and cutting down their sacred trees, prompting the latter to turn him into a weapon against humanity.
  • Over 8000 years before the start of the story, he started the Long Night, which caused thousands to starve as the crops and fields were buried under masses of snow.
  • He accepted Craster's babies as sacrifices and converted them to White Walkers to increase his army. He also does this with Craster's last son after Karl Tanner takes over the keep.
  • He led an attack on Hardhome, completely destroying the town and killing many people, before ressurrecting them as his wights for his armies.
  • He tries to kill Bran Stark in the cave of the Three-Eyed Raven and leaves his mark on his arm.
  • He takes over the cave of the Three-Eyed Raven and cut the Three-Eyed Raven into half. this battle also kill all the Childrens of the Forest, the direwolf Summer and Hodor, and nearly kill Bran and Meera.
  • Tries to kill Jon Snow and his comrades that stuck on frozen lake in the ir search for one of his wights. And when Daenerys Targaryen arrived to save them, he killed one of her dragons named Viserion, and brings him back alive as wight dragon for his army.
  • He destroyed the Wall by using Viserion and kills most of its defenders to invade the Seven Kingdoms.
  • He killed many people during his invasion in the North.
  • By himself, he attempts to kill Bran Stark and Theon Greyjoy, in his attempt to defend Bran.
  • He killed Lord Ned Umber (who is a child) and assembles severed hands around his body to send some kind of message.
  • He attacked Winterfell with the intention to kill everyone there and nearly succeeded in doing this, while destroying the lives of the most of Jon and Daenerys's allies.
  • His ultimate goal was to wipe out all humanity and bring eternal night to Westeros.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is very tragic because he was a regular person before the Children of the Forest captured him and transformed him into the Night King against his will to wipe out humanity.
  • He lacks moral agency because he was transformed against his will into the Night King. While he turns against his masters and tries to kill them as well, there is still no indication that he has gained free will or that he is capable of stopping his evil actions and becoming a normal person again. However, it is possible was cruel even before as he fought against the foresters even before his change to white walker.
  • He is a Generic Doomsday Villain who has absolutely no personality. He has no dialogue and no relationships with other characters and there is no discernible motivation for any of his actions.

Trivia[]

  • The Night King is the only A Song of Ice and Fire Inconsistently Heinous character to be non-human.
  • He is also the only Inconsistently Heinous in Game of Thrones TV series, who has no original novel counterpart.
  • It is unknown if he will be Inconsistently Heinous in the novel cycle even if he will ever appear in the book series.
