~ New Death to Finn the Human and Jake the Dog. |
New Death is the secondary antagonist of the 2020-2021 Max limited series Adventure Time: Distant Lands special "Together Again".
He is the son of Life and Death and the Land of the Dead's ruler after his father, succeeding him sometime before Finn the Human's death. However, New Death actually usurped his father by killing him at the behest of the Farmworld Lich's hand, who manipulates him into stop the reincarnation cycle so he can assist him in his goal to kill all of the Multiverse's life.
He was voiced by Chris Fleming.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- Murders his father Death under the orders of the Farmworld Lich's hand by biting him in the neck, in spite that Death did care for him and was hugging him at that moment to show that he loved him despite him trying to hit him with his zen rake.
- Takes over all of the Dead Worlds, changing the rules to his whims, making things not simple and ruling them with an iron fist, to the point that Joshua and Margaret, Jake the Dog's parents, had to carry weapons to defend themselves from the "rat nests" the Dead Worlds are.
- Offers the Undertakers, his guards (from whom Tiffany Oiler is part) to choose what they want from his "buffet of destiny" if they follow his orders for his visionary plans.
- Sends everyone who dies to the 1st Dead World, where only bad souls go, where everyone has to stay submerged in a gooey lake with only their heads out of the lake, in spite that several souls did not deserve to be there, even changing their assigned Death Worlds like how Finn "The Human" Mertens is assigned to go to the 37th Dead World but an Undertaker rips off the ticket Mr. Fox gave him.
- Opts to play with his guitar, goof with his scythe around, listen to stereo music, drink orange soda in his room and overall be lazy instead of carrying out his job, asking the Undertakers to send away any normal soul who goes to talk to him, with the Undertakers even threatening Finn to turn him into a bathroom bomb when he tries to get an audience with New Death.
- Treats the Undertakers, Tiffany and Mr. Fox badly, throwing a soda can at Tiffany and insulting him for not preventing Finn from going to chamber.
- Burns down one of his guards just because he assured him that he would hit Tiffany with one of his soda cans next time after he failed to hit him, leading New Death to burn him while insisting that he failed on purpose.
- Attempts to kill Tiffany with his scythe out of anger that he unintentionally let Finn and Mr. Fox enter into his room.
- Admits that he likes getting rid of the "senseless" Dead Worlds and that destroy souls to stop the cycle of reincarnation is magnificent, in his opinion.
- Threatens to destroy Finn's souls by reducing his atoms to oblivion and only relents because he deems Finn a loser that doesn't deserve his attention, ordering his guards to take him away.
- Nearly has Tiffany reduced to sparks that silently lament for failing him, which can easily be considered a fate worse than death, though he forgives him if he leads the Undertakers to the 45th Dead World and finishes Finn off.
- The Undertakers obliterate the home of Joshua, Margaret and Jermaine under his orders to get rid of Finn, leading them to lose their home before being seized to be taken to the 1st Dead World, though Tiffany takes pity of them and instead takes them to his private chamber, and Finn to be send into a dark void, where they later find him and beat him up after he reunites with Jake.
- Arrives after Finn and Jake defeat the Undertakers to announce that he planned for them to reunite so he could gain access to the 50th Dead World, as he didn't find a way to open it before, which makes Finn feel bad that he exploited Joshua and Margaret as well as ruined Jake's happiness chances by bringing New Death to the 50th Dead World out of selfishness.
- Insults the 50th Dead World's population once he finds out that they act like a "hippie choir" that always meditates, pushing one of them for not listening to his claims that he rules.
- Sends all of the 50th Dead World's souls out of the realm by opening a hole that takes all of them, plus Finn and Jake, to the 1st Dead World so they can't sink.
- What's worse is that several monsters are seen hurting the 1st Dead World's population, like a scorpion and an ell that pinch and zap Wyatt in the nose (though he deserves it) and a big fish monster that attempts to devour Finn and Jake once they come back from their visit to Life's kingdom to learn how they can stop New Death.
- Throws out from the 45th Dead World all of its populace, like Little Trunks and her many husbands, into the 1st Dead World.
- Wipes out all the Dead Worlds with his Undertakers as evidenced in his observatory's screens, promising that they are disappearing and Mr. Fox acknowledging that everything's gonna be horrible forever.
- Attempts to kill Finn and Jake with his scythe and destroy them as they argue how to use Life's Kiss to finish him off, taunting them with the fact that they will have to replace him as Death if they manage to kill him.
- Notwithstanding how high are the franchise's Heinous Standards, New Death's plans to have the cycle of reincarnation permanently stopped so everyone who dies would stay dead and destroy all of the afterlife are unique enough to stand out.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He regretted having killed his father, who never spoke to him as far as we see and instead insisted him to accompany him at his garden by making sand figures with zen rakes, while his mother ignored him by focusing more on her work than in her family, even reacting with horror after biting his father's neck by getting scared over his mother killing him for that.
- To prove how much he cared for his father, New Death kept one of Death's rakes at his room.
- Has some insecurities, as he admitted to Finn and Jake that he didn't want to become Death in the first place, suffering when he was skinned alive to become Death's successor.
- Has a few comedic moments when he isn't taken that seriously, like his running gag of spitting fire whenever he loses his cool or how Finn and Jake beat him up childishly with Life's Kiss.
- For the most part, he was being manipulated by the Farmworld Lich's hand, who wasn't really a friend to him in spite of his claims, seeing him as a pawn. Due to how the Lich is implied to have inspired some of his decisions, one can say that New Death has some moral agency issues.
- His death was played for sympathy, as he covered his eyes and sadly asked for his mother Life in his last words, probably due to realizing that Life played a role in killing him.
Trivia[]
- New Death is the sole Inconsistently Heinous character of the Adventure Time franchise to originate from the Max specials instead of the original series.
