Negan Smith is one of the main antagonists of AMC’s The Walking Dead franchise, based off the comic series of the same name.
Prior to his redemption arc, he was the charismatic and tyrannical ruler of a group known as the Saviors, who would exploit and extort smaller communities for their resources. However, after being defeated by Rick Grimes and imprisoned for several years, Negan changed his ways and became an anti-hero who would go on to help the communities in majors ways.
He’s also one of the two protagonists of the spin-off series The Walking Dead: Dead City.
He is portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
In General[]
- He has a very sadistic side and often made jokes when he was killing and tormenting people and even admitted that he enjoyed killing people (at least people he thought deserved it.)
- Whilst he has plenty of comedic moments:
- They are only funny for the audience, as pre-redemption he was taken very seriously as a threat, typically entailing gallows humour or was at the expense of others, such as commenting on a overweight Olivia being in charge of the food, making him 'Laughably Evil', as opposed to detracting from his heinousness.
- Whilst he later becomes a comic relief character, he only gains this trait post-redemption.
Past[]
- When he was a child, he brought a dog that killed other dogs he had brought and accidentally caused his mother to get hurt.
- He hit a man in a bar, just because he wouldn't let him listen to his favorite song.
- Prior to the apocalypse, he cheated on his wife, Lucille.
- While his wife's suicide is undoubtably tragic, it does not excuse or justify the villainous acts he later committed, as those he harmed or killed had no connection to her death.
- Killed Craven and his men. While they did deserve it, this was Negan’s start of darkness.
Main Series[]
Season 6[]
- Subjugated many communities including Alexandria, Hilltop, The Kingdom, & Oceanside into working for him and giving him and the Saviors half of everything they had such as weapons, food, and drinks.
- Used murder as a fear tactic to keep the communities in line.
- Killed 20+ people by bashing their heads in with a baseball bat covered in barbed wire (which he named Lucille after his dead wife).
Season 7[]
- Forced Rick’s group on their knees and crosses the Moral Event Horizon by brutally murdering Abraham and Glenn with Lucille. He also took sadistic pleasure in tormenting them in front of their loved ones and mocking them while they were dying.
- The former due to him being the strongest and most resistant and the latter as punishment for Daryl punching him in the face. He then psychologically tormented Rick into submission by threatening to kill his loved ones unless he chopped his son’s left arm off only to stop at the last moment when Rick was at his most terrified.
- He then takes Daryl with him and the Saviors and makes him work for him.
- The former due to him being the strongest and most resistant and the latter as punishment for Daryl punching him in the face. He then psychologically tormented Rick into submission by threatening to kill his loved ones unless he chopped his son’s left arm off only to stop at the last moment when Rick was at his most terrified.
- Locked Daryl in a closet naked with the only food being dog food and made him listen to the song “Easy Street” on repeat. When Daryl tried to escape, he had his men beat him up as punishment.
- Threatened to have someone in Alexandria die if all their weapons weren’t found and given to him.
- Burned half of Dwight and Mark’s face with an iron. The former because he tried to escape and the latter for sleeping with his girlfriend Amber who was also one of Negan’s wives.
- Disemboweled Spencer in front of everyone in Alexandria when he found out that Spencer was trying to use him to kill Rick and then posthumously taunted him by saying he did have guts after all.
- He then had Arat kill someone after Rosita accidentally shot Lucille instead of him which resulted in Arat killing Olivia. He then took Eugene with him to make help him make bullets for the Saviors.
- Murdered Dr. Carson by shoving him into a furnace when he thought he helped free Daryl. In truth, Dwight framed Dr. Carson for freeing Daryl when Sherry was the one who actually helped free Daryl. Making matters worse, Carson was a qualified doctor.
- He made Carl kneel and almost killed him with the bat, only because those from the kingdom came to help.
- Declared war on the communities, starting an all out war.
Season 8[]
- Went to Alexandria and had his men blow up some of its houses. While he was hesitant to do so, since there were potentially children inside, he still went through with it, backtracking on his statement of not wanting to harm kids.
- When Rick told him that Carl died, he spitefully told him that he failed as a leader and as a father.
- Had the Saviors infect the communities with infected weapons.
- Attempted to wipe out the communities when he realized there would never be a way to peacefully have them work for him thanks to Simon.
Season 9[]
- Attempted to coerce Maggie into killing him when he was locked up by bragging about killing Glenn, only to fail when she finds out that him living is more of a punishment than killing him.
Season 11[]
- Left Maggie to fend for herself, but it's implied that he thought she was trying to kill him, which would put the group in danger.
The Walking Dead: Dead City[]
- He killed 4 men who stole his wife, including Ginny's father, resulting in her being orphaned and remaining silent.
- He took a Buraz member hostage and then brought him back into the building before slitting his throat and letting his blood rain down on the others.
- He killed Luther because he wanted to hand him over to the Marshals.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- Although the tragedy of his wife's suicide doesn’t justify his descent into villainy, it can't be denied that he loved her deeply. Her death marked the start of his dark transformation, which happened after she took her own life while he was missing for several days, having been kidnapped by Craven and his men while searching for medical supplies for her chemotherapy.
- Even though he had cheated on her before the apocalypse, he felt genuine remorse upon learning about her cancer and tried to make amends. In her memory, he named his bat Lucille after her.
- Despite his sadism, he is a well-intentioned extremist, as his harsh treatment towards the communities was his way of making them stronger and more capable of fighting back in a world ruled by zombies, since his ultimate goal was to help rebuild society, much like Rick.
- He is very honorable:
- He showed Rick respect on many occasions and even grew to like him after the war.
- He killed Spencer for trying to have him kill Rick for shallow reasons.
- He is very open about his dislike of harming people whom he believes don't deserve it, this includes kids.
- He strongly disproves of rape and sexual assault, and kills anyone in his community who attempts to do so.
- When he forced Eugene and Gabriel to work for him, he didn’t harm them.
- He shows disgust towards Simon for his needless massacre of the male members (including children) of Oceanside and later of the Scavengers. And is disheartened when he realizes that he has to kill the communities thanks to Simon unintentionally giving them a loophole, causing them to have a resolve to not surrender. He also shows disgust towards Alpha when she reveals to him that she is going to kill her daughter because it’s her "destiny".
- He tried to save Gage from being killed by walkers despite the fact that he previously bullied and attacked Lydia.
- He cares for multiple people:
- He genuinely admired Carl and when he made a joke about Carl’s missing eye and realized he made him cry, Negan apologized and even brought him back to Alexandria unharmed. Additionally, when he was about to kill him, he was very hesitant to do so (due to his aforementioned dislike of harming children) and was only going to follow through to maintain the persona of a strong, imposing leader for his people. He was also saddened to learn that Carl died and asks Rick if he or one of his men were responsible. Years later, he tells Judith stories about her brother and how much of a badass he was.
- He sincerely cared about his people since he wanted to punish Rick’s group for them killing all of them (even if it was the Saviors who provoked them first).
- He cares for Judith and Lydia. For Judith, he helps her with her math homework and even saved her and Daryl's dog during a snowstorm. He also didn’t try to sugarcoat anything when she asked him about Glenn and Abraham, and was completely honest to her about what he did to them. For Lydia, he tries to give her advice about bullying and protects her from Gage, Margo, and Alfred who were beating her up. He also saves her from a murderous Beta.
- He ultimately redeems himself when he helps assassinate Alpha. Although he did have to play along and pretend he was an ally, which included attacking Hilltop, but he showed genuine reluctance to do so, and when Daryl told him children were hurt, he showed remorse for it. He also helps take out Alpha's second-in-command Beta rather than fleeing as Negan was originally planning on doing.
- He shows genuine remorse for his crimes and at one point refers to his past self as a monster. In “Here’s Negan”, he has a hallucination of his past self and shows disgust towards him, calling him a clown and cult of personality with no cult.
- He showed remorse over killing Glenn, and when Glenn's son Hershel II found out that he was the "bad man" that killed his father, Negan assured him that they'd settle it when the former was older. After being on the other side of such a line-up, Negan finally understood the gravity of what he had done and sincerely apologized to Maggie for it, although she wasn't able to forgive him.
- As noted by the Dama, Negan feels a responsibility for Glenn's son due to his murder of Glenn, something that the Dama uses to force Negan to do her bidding by threatening the boy.
Trivia[]
- He is currently the only Walking Dead character to be approved both Inconsistently Heinous and Inconsistently Admirable.
