Nellie Lovett (also known as Mrs. Lovett) is the villainous deuteragonist of the 1979 musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and the 2007 live-action film of the same name.
She was portrayed by the late Angela Lansbury in the musical and Helena Bonham Carter, who also played the Red Queen, in the live-action film.
Her Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Her Heinous?[]
- She made Todd think his wife, Lucy was dead simply to have him all to herself, further fuelling his murderous desire for revenge.
- She assisted Todd in his murders by helping lure customers into his barber shop.
- She turned the dead bodies that Todd sent her into meat pies and sold them to her customers, thereby committing enforced cannibalism.
- What makes this even worse is that this was her idea in the first place as she suggested it and Todd willingly went along with it.
What Makes Her Inconsistent?[]
- There are several people she loves/cares for:
- She clearly loved Todd as she supported him and the main reason why she lied to him about the death of his wife was so that she can have him for herself.
- She also cared for Toby as she adopted him out of pity for the abuse he suffered at Adolfo Pirelli's hands and treated him with motherly care, while hiding her and Todd's actions from him throughout.
- To further prove this was genuine, she included him in the fantasy she had at one point where she and Todd were a married couple with him as their son.
- She seemed to have a loving relationship with her deceased husband, Albert, keeping a picture of him on her wall and speaking sombrely of him to Todd and Toby.
- She is quite affable as she was cordial to Todd before even knowing who he was. She also encouraged Anthony to follow his heart in pursuing Joanna and convinced Todd to allow him to give her lodgings in the pie shop.
- She has some standards as she found Judge Turpin’s crimes towards Todd and Lucy repulsive when describing them to him. She was also similarly disgusted when watching Adolfo Pirelli abuse Toby when the boy was his assistant.
Trivia[]
- She and Todd are the only Inconsistently Heinous Dreamworks villains to be from one of their live-action films.
