Mr. Donatti is the main antagonist of Quitters' Inc (by Stephen King) and the leader of the company of the same name. He is an extremist who seeks to end smoking in consenting patients by torturing their wives and themselves every time they smoke, leading to their death if it happens enough times.

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He gives a severe punishment every time one of his patients smokes, using his spies to detect when this happens. There are four punishments, given in order: Electrocute the patient's wife in front of the patient, electrocute the patient in front of the wife, rape the wife, and kill the patient. Given the context of how hard is to quit smoking so fast, this has led to many deaths and rapes due to how many people sign up for his program and fail.
    • In the book, he gives the patient more chances, but includes beatings of their son and even breaking his bones. (It is unknown how these punishments are modified if the patient has no wife or no son, but it would likely be equivalent.)
  • Even after the patient succeeds, they have to keep their weight below a certain level and take illegal diet pills to achieve it. If this fails, he will cut the wife's little finger off. This actually happened once and the result was shown onscreen.
  • He zaps a cat to show Morrison (his patient) what will happen to his wife and himself if he smokes. Donatti's spies catch Morrison almost smoking in his room, but quits, then smoking in his car, and with a smile, the spy holds a gun to Morrison's head and makes him watch his wife getting tortured as Donatti laughs to it.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • The whole point of his program, although heinous, is to genuinely help the patients quit smoking and lead better lives. The story has many scenes of people and even children addicted to smoking, which Morrison struggles to resist, which is portrayed as sad. Morrison even sincerely thanks Donatti for his help, as did another patient despite his wife losing her finger because of it. He is also affable to his patients and lectures them on why he chooses to do this job.
  • Even though the story is horror, He is played for laughs, because he laughs and plays goofy music whenever he is on screen, and also smashed up all Morrison's cigarettes for comic relief.
  • He only attacks when someone breaks the rules, making him Lawful Neutral. Even further, he never lies about what those rules are.
