Charles Montgomery "Monty" Plantagenet Schicklgruber Burns, better known as Mr. Burns, is the main antagonist of The Simpsons franchise.
He is an extremely greedy, cheap, tyrannical, and egotistical businessman and the richest and most powerful citizen of Springfield. He is also the founder and chairman of the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, the boss of Homer Simpson, Lenny, Carl, and Waylon Smithers, and the archenemy and former friend of Abe Simpson.
He was voiced by the late Christopher Collins in his first appearance and by Harry Shearer for the rest of the series.
His Evil Ranking[]
What Makes Him Heinous?[]
- As a child, he repeatedly rammed into a Scottish man with a bumper car, supposedly crippling him for life. When he thinks back on this as an adult, he spends the entire day laughing about it.
- He attempted to block out the sun to raise prices for the electricity supply for the town, firing Smithers for objecting to it, pointing out the animals and trees would die.
- Took Bart from his family, then he made a fake video to make Bart think his family was better off without him, and tried to get him to fire Homer.
- While he and Abe Simpson were on a deserted island, he shot down Santa’s sleigh, just because he wanted to shoot something, and after they fixed the sleigh, he knocked out Santa, stole the sleigh, and left Abe and Santa behind.
- He made a sinkhole that destroyed the retirement home.
- He forced children to work for him under awful conditions.
- He made Smithers kidnap Tom Jones, hold him at gunpoint, and chain him while he was singing.
- He attempted to murder Grandpa Simpson for a collection of German paintings and later tried to drown Bart to death.
- He sexually harassed Marge Simpson, which caused Marge to feel discomforted.
- He was the one who turned Homer’s mother, Mona Simpson, into a criminal and got the FBI to track her down, forcing her to abandon her husband, Abraham Simpson, and his son, Homer.
- This would indirectly ruin Homer's childhood as well as Abraham Simpson's parenthood, as Mona would never return back to them until Homer became an adult and got his family.
- This also means that he is responsible for Homer staying idiotic, sealing his fate for Marge Simpson and having his family with her, as well as Homer getting his job at the Springfield Nuclear Power Plant, which sometimes isn't that bad, as he enjoys his time with his friends Carl and Lenny, but is actually pretty miserable.
- In a way, he is also responsible for many villains in the series antagonizing the Simpsons, such as Sideshow Bob and his family, as well as Homer's stupidity causing Springfield to be enclosed in a dome by the EPA under Russ Cargill's orders. So in short, Mr. Burns caused most of the events in the series; everything would have been different if he didn't ruin Mona Simpson's reputation.
- This would indirectly ruin Homer's childhood as well as Abraham Simpson's parenthood, as Mona would never return back to them until Homer became an adult and got his family.
- When the Simpsons family was facing money troubles, Homer asked Burns for a raise, and Burns then made Homer do a number of humiliating acts for money; one of them ended up getting Homer raped by a panda.
- He was behind an illegal fracking operation that caused the waters at the Simpson household to become flammable.
- He took multiple greyhound puppies and tried to kill them for their fur, though he later changed his mind and let them live.
- He once remembered when he crippled someone with a bumper cart and then spent hours laughing because of it.
- He promised to donate a million dollars to the Cheery Red Tomatoes for the children's hospital, but it turned out to be a lie for his sadistic pleasure.
- He adopted Santa’s Little Helper and tortured him into becoming a killer dog that attacked anyone who came onto Burns’s property.
- He deemed Homer insane and had him put into a mental hospital just because he was wearing pink to work.
- When the town's power started to fail due to the dome, despite initially being tempted to give them power after Wiggum and Hibbert gave valid reasons to do so, he ultimately refused just because Apu told him to look into his heart and he would find the answer, which he responded to by siccing his hounds on them.
- Accidentally hit Bart with his car and then wanted to give him just a nickel and a penny. Showing no remorse for this action.
- When Homer was in a coma, Burns tried pulling the plug on him to avoid paying for his health insurance.
- He joined the angry mob to kill Homer Simpson and his family because of Homer dooming all of Springfield by polluting the lake. What's worse is that the rest of the Simpsons family had nothing to do with Homer polluting Lake Springfield. While Homer is guilty of Russ Cargill enclosing Springfield inside a dome, this doesn't justify killing him and his family.
- When he was taught to recycle, he opened up a recycling plant, but it is later shown he is actually using this plant to catch many sea creatures to turn them into a compound.
- He attempted to steal his teddy bear from the Simpsons and took control over all Springfield’s TV channels and had beer trucks draw away from Springfield to force the Simpsons to give up the bear.
- He ordered the murder of the Ramones, thinking they were the Rolling Stones.
- He had Homer beaten up during his birthday.
- While he may seem the least atrocious out of any of The Simpsons villains, especially when compared to Sideshow Bob's attempted populicide against Springfield, Russ Cargill’s attempt to blow up Springfield, or Lyle Lanley's atrocities related to his monorails, Mr. Burns still does stand out, even if barely, as he has proven to be perfectly willing to shoot and murder numerous animals for clothes (and for sadism) and especially for being responsible for ruining Homer Simpson's childhood, which pretty much caused the entire events of the series.
- He is also so despicable that nearly every character of the series, hero, neutral, or villain, despises him for his crimes.
- While he has comedic moments like being treated as an incompetent joke by everyone and failing to step on an ant, his crimes are still taken seriously in-universe.
What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]
- He genuinely cares for Smithers and has looked after him ever since he was a kid.
- He was genuinely grateful to Homer for stopping the bomb from blowing up Springfield and cheered for him alongside the rest of the town.
- He is On & Off, as he occasionally performs anti-heroic actions and even feels remorse for some of his vile actions.
- He once helped Lisa against a goat, telling the goat he will have to go through him for no pragmatic reason.
- He had a genuinely tough and tragic childhood, where his grandfather molded Burns into becoming the man he is today.
- He does have a few standards, such as getting wrathful at lawyers for living off injury and divorces, getting upset at Homer for throwing pudding at Carl instead of Lenny, and telling Smithers to turn their vehicle around so he can warn a woman that she is hooking up with a married man.
- After he discovered that Marge was married, he stopped trying to pursue her, as he knows that doing so would ruin Homer's marriage.
- He was genuinely shocked to see Frank Grimes kill himself out of insanity and attended his funeral.
- He has a few "Pet the Dog" moments, such as letting Maggie keep his beloved old teddy bear, fully paying Lisa her share of the profits when she helped him regain his fortune, tending to baby Smithers after his father died, and ensuring Homer gets an education so he can keep his job when it would be easier to fire him.
