If someone among us is the witch, then everyone other than the militant member is the witch. Who's the witch? Come forward. If nobody does, then I'll throw everyone into the fire.
~ Aguni before attempting to kill all the people at the Beach during the Witch Hunt.

Morizono Aguni (also known as Agni) is a main character in the Netflix series Alice in Borderland, based on the manga of the same name. He is the Hatter's best friend and first appears as a high-ranking member of the Beach, serving as the Leader of the Militant Core (one of the two factions that control the Beach) until the Ten of Hearts game occurs and the Beach is sent into a state of chaos.

While initially appearing as an ambiguous character, Aguni is later revealed to be actually an anti-hero who temporarily becomes a villain near the end of the First Stage of the series because he is grief-stricken over the Hatter's death and seeks revenge on the people of the Beach for the loss of his best friend. In Second Stage, a fully redeemed Aguni plays a pivotal role in defeating the King of Spades, helping Arisu and the other players beat the games.

He is portrayed by Sho Aoyagi. In the English dub, he is voiced by Harry Standjofski.

His Evil Ranking[]

What Makes Him Heinous?[]

  • He is known for being a brute, implying that he has beaten people at the Beach. He is also often blunt and very jerkish, especially during the events at the Beach.
  • In the TV series, he lets one of his own Beach members die at the hands of a dealer in the Five of Spades.
  • In the manga, in the Six of Spades game, he mocks the death of a Beach member who is being mauled by wolves instead of helping him.
  • In the TV series, he is initially disgusted that Arisu survived and arrived at the Beach instead of Karube, who Aguni appreciated for being a much better fighter, while he considers Arisu to be just a "small fish".
  • It is unknown why he wanted Usagi to come with him after meeting her at the Beach, since he doesn't seem that interested in women, even openly rejecting Akane's flirts in the manga. Regardless of his reasons, he wanted her to go with him against her will. When Arisu tried to stop Usagi from being taken away, Aguni told Niragi to break both his legs so he would die in the next game.
  • In the TV series, after Hatter's death, he usurped the leadership of the Beach, which belonged to the number two, Keiichi Kuzuryu.
  • He used the Ten of Hearts game to take revenge on everyone at the Beach for causing Hatter to go crazy. He started a massacre by ordering the Militant to kill many innocent people, with the intention to kill everyone at the Beach and die with them.
  • In the manga, during Ten of Hearts, he kills a Militant member by throwing him out a window because he doesn't want to kill the people at the Beach and says he can't continue the game.
  • In the manga, he beats and badly injures Kuina during the Ten of Hearts. He also hits and knocks down Tatta just for crossing his way.
  • When Arisu finds out why Aguni started a massacre in the Ten of Hearts, he brutally beats Arisu to near death instead of admitting the truth.
  • In the manga, after Arisu revealed Aguni's true intentions in the Ten of Hearts, he also beats a couple of Militants who try to reason with him to make him stop the massacre.
  • He does not fail the heinous standards to the game masters, as while they are in charge of the games in the Borderlands, Aguni has less resources than them due to being a mere game player.
    • While his direct kill count is low, he attempted to have everyone at the Beach killed in the Ten of Hearts game. During this game, the Beach had 65 people in the manga and hundreds of people in the TV series, with the massacre resulting in more than half of these people being wiped out (dozens in the manga and hundreds in the TV series). Thus, this is enough for Aguni to meet the high heinous standard of Alice in Borderland.

What Makes Him Inconsistent?[]

  • He is incredibly tragic, as he killed his own best friend Hatter in self-defence and he immediately felt remorse for it since he cried hysterically right after realizing that Hatter wanted to die. Plus, he never originally wanted to kill people nor did he even want to be a game player in the Borderlands in the first place. His worst decisions stem mainly from the horrible circumstances in the Borderlands plus his grief over losing Hatter, making him a villain by proxy.
  • In the manga, he also has a very tragic background in which his father was an alcoholic that would frequently beat up him and his mother. His mother couldn't stand the abuse and left their home, abandoning her husband and young son. At the age of 12, Aguni also ended up running away from home.
  • Due to his tragic past (in the manga) and killing of Hatter (his best friend), Aguni has extremely sympathetic insecurities as his own actions had a huge effect on his mental health as he became very suicidal. During the Ten of Hearts, he just wants to die along with everyone at the Beach. He is full of regret about killing his best friend and later on the people at the Beach. He even sees visions and illusions of Hatter accusing him of his crimes every now and then, which makes him wish to die alongside the King of Spades.
  • He is honorable because he accepted the opportunity to lead the Militant to help Hatter to keep the most dangerous people at the Beach (such as Niragi and Last Boss) under control and prevent them to disturb others.
    • He also seems not even to like Niragi. When Niragi keeps hitting around with Hatter's dead body, Aguni doesn't really like it and demands Niragi to stop.
  • He has standards as he was horrified when he found out that Hatter was beating and killing people for the playing cards, realizing his best friend had gone insane when he created the third rule about the traitors. Because of this, he even tries to convince Hatter to disband the Beach but fails.
  • He redeems himself at the end of the First Stage, he runs in front of Arisu taking a couple bullets for him so he can tackle down and disarm Niragi, who was about to kill a lot of people. He later becomes a hero and is key to defeat the King of Spades in the Second Stage.
  • He genuinely cares for Akane in the TV series and also Hayato in the manga, and also becomes protective of them and even Arisu ever since the incident at the Beach.

Trivia[]

  • So far, Aguni and Mira Kano are the only two Inconsistently Heinous villains from Alice in Borderland. But other game masters, such as Keiichi Kuzuryu, likely also qualify.
  • Morizono Aguni was originally considered a Villainous Benchmark due to failing the heinous standards to the game masters, but when it was pointed out that he has fewer resources, it was decided that Aguni qualifies as Inconsistently Heinous.
    • Thus, Morizono Aguni is currently the only character in Alice in Borderland to qualify as both Inconsistently Heinous and Inconsistently Admirable at the same time.
